By leeloosan03
Hello! this is a guide for people who are just starting on the first snow island! There may already be a few guides on how to do this but this is mine.

Handling with snow.
The first challenge that appears is the snow and the cold, keep your creatures together in bundles of three to keep them warm and from freezing. The animals will freeze under four or five days left alone while it snows. Putting them in hot springs will keep them warm permanently. Unfortunately, creatures cannot nest in the hot springs and are quite vulnerable.
When the snow begins and ends
thirteen days until winter begins
Snowing lasts for two days.
Snowing melts in seven days.
Food
The WalrusDeer is the one you'll
need eight creatures to attack since if you are
going to surround it, you must leave two spaces for the WalrusDeer so it can go back and forth if you don't do this, the Walrusdeer will start attacking your nichelings and potentially kill them.
the main prey on the island are,
WalrusDeer
Rabbil
Stagmole
Fish
Razorania
Crabbit
Goldleech.
Four of these, you would need to head into the icy cold waters to catch, making only three prey accessible from the start. The outside of the island has a grassy perimeter while having an icy cold middle with stumps and hot springs, the middle grounds, frequently where the rabbils spawn from their burrows, on the outskirts are most likely where the stagmoles will be. (And the Walrus deer are sometimes in both)
Plants
Then there are the pine-trees, oak trees, palm trees, berry bushes, and toxic berry bushes. The pine trees are a bit useless as they don't do anything other than look pretty because you can't even fly on them. Also, twig bushes that have black stems and have little cotton ball-like things on the ends of them. They give one to two nesting material, other than that they are a bit useless as well.
Predators (And dealing with them)
The predators of the island are,

Bird of prey: Instant death for babies: 20 food
Balance bear: 2 strength: 30 food
Artic ram fox: 2 strength: 4 food
Bearyena: 2 strength: 10 food points
Rogue male (If you count them as predator)

Dealing with artic ram foxes
To deal with artic ram foxes, you may need to grab your youngest and leave the weakest and book it since attacking them might have the whole pack on your tail. (That is if you have one) The groups seem to go from three being the lowest number and six or five being the highest.

Dealing with Balance bears
RUNNNNNN FOR THE HILLS! And or attack if you have the armored body and bearyena claws. Just stay away from them at all costs if you're not prepared, though they don't instantly attack you, so you may be able to get away.

Dealing with Bearyenas

Bearyenas are not as easy to avoid but are simpler to kill then the tanks that are the balance bears. They have a growling noise when they pop out of the grass and are hard to miss sometimes. Having claw or bearyena claw will be useful if you're going to tackle them.

Ice blocks and ancient genes
There are two iceblocks on each island (Maybe three if you're lucky). Each either holds, armored body, wings, hammer tail, mammoth foot, digging trunk, sabertooth fangs, and Megalocerous horns. From experience, the hammer tail seems a bit rarer than the others since it took me quite a few snowy islands to get hammer tail.
Ports
To the left seems to be a peaceful island usually, to the right a hard island and up north another hard island and or a harder arctic island.
Strategy
Personally, the Strategy I use is surviving on the island for a few days (If possible), grab the ice blocks, and bolt to a port since staying for longer could be risky. I went into the easy islands and created an extensive trail while clearing all the food, then rushing through a whale island and going to the first snow islands. Rinsing and repeating this can also get you the achievement, "Prehistoric hunter." Though staying within the grasslands is more leisurely, having a group of three or more creatures going out and hunting for rabbils or iceblocks is also an excellent way to do things since its staying in the safe grounds while not risking the lives of your creatures.
Conclusion
I hope this was useful for you as
the snowy island isn't that hard to conquer as long as you know what you're getting into when you come to it, its a challenge with trial and error that might happen time and time again and in the end, it's a fun challenge if you're bored on niche. (: Thanks for reading!

This guide is so old now I'm surprised people actually read and liked this because I couldn't even spell arctic correctly haha.
