How2: Change character Names in Arena mode

A simple guide on how to change your character's names in the Arena using HxD (Hex editor).

It is typically ill advised to edit game files, and often frond upon by both the Devs and other players ...
Editing game files removes a lot of the fun from the game and how it was intended to be played, a carefully crafted experience can very easily be ruined by doing so, especially in a game such as Exanima / Sui Generis where the limited resources, oppressing atmosphere and fragility of your characters existence make the game what it is: a pre-release masterpiece.

I will always encourage you, the reader, to run through and complete the game as it was initially intended to be played before you start editing the files, and ultimately dulling the experience this game has to offer.

If you chose to move forward through this guide, there is but one and one rule only you must follow:
> Always make a backup copy of the files you wish to modify <
This will allow you to replace them in case you mess up. If you chose to proceed without making a backup, any mess you create will be your own doing, and you will be solely responsible.

WARNING

When using a Hex editor to modify game files, be sure that the game is CLOSED / NOT running in the background, as this may end up in corrupted / broken files.

Step by step walkthrough

For this guide, I am using the Hex editor "HxD", you can download it at the link below:

Before we actually get started, make a backup copy of the save files before you attempt any editing, as mentioned in the disclaimer, this will allow you to replace any broken files if you happen to mess up.

• Step 1: Open the file you wish to edit

  Navigate to the game saves file location which can be found below,
  C:\Users\ Your User Name \AppData\Roaming\Exanima
  
  

  Note: there are two types of files for an Arena mode save
  
  

  • ".rsg"
    
  • ".rsg.bak".

  You'll need to edit the ".rsg" file, not the other.

• Step 2: Search for the Name you wish to edit

  Use the search option "ctrl+F" then enter the name you want to change and hit "enter"
  
  
  
  This will bring you to the exact encrypted line in the code with the name highlighted on the right in the "decrypted" column as seen below,

• Step 3: Change it !

  Highlight the name in the decrypted column, then simply change it to whatever you want, the Hex code will automatically get edited / changed.
  Any unsaved changes you make will be seen as red text, allowing you to keep track of what you've changed, and if it has been saved or not.

• Step 4: Save & Profit

  Now that you're done changing what you wanted, simply hit "save" and close the Hex editor, then launch the game and profit ^^
  

This works for both AI controlled characters and ones you create yourself.
It also works for Single Player, so if you wish to rename Derrin, you can.
Just be sure to always create a backup save, just in case, you never know ^^
