Intro
This guide is meant to be a compendium of hints that can point you in the right direction when trying to complete a level. I've tried to design it so that each hint is a little bit more obvious than the previous one, so you should probably only look at them one at a time. I've also written a short description for each solution so if you're completely stumped, you can still try to finish it without just watching someone else do it. I've also added some important rules of SSR at the end - I recommend you don't read them until you've completed the relevant world, as it might spoil some mechanics! Take note that for this entire guide, I'll be referring to the player character as Stephen. I realize that Stephen's Sausage Roll probably refers to the developer rather than the kid with the fork but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If this guide helps you at all, I'd appreciate it if you left a rating!

EDIT 11/23/2022: Tidied up some descriptions here and there and clarified a point in the mechanics section for World 3 thanks to the tip from a commenter. Also been feeling the urge to make another hint guide, so if anyone is still reading this, feel free to leave a comment suggesting a game you'd like to see a similar style guide for!
World 1
Infant's Break
Hint 1: What position would the sausages need to be in in order for you to grill them properly?
Hint 2: Horizontal sausages can't be pushed across two adjacent horizontal grills, and vice versa with vertical sausages.
Solution: Roll the left sausage along the right grill and the right sausage along the left grill.

Southjaunt
Hint 1: Never extend an uncooked sausage over an edge unless there's an adjoining space for you to push it back.
Solution: Roll the left sausage across the grill, then bring the right sausage around to the other side and grill it the same way.

Lachrymose Head
Hint 1: There are lots of ways to create a failure state in this level. Before you move a sausage onto a grill, think about how you'll move it back to grill the rest of it later.
Hint 2: Mathematically, there's only one possible starting move that doesn't create a failure state.
Hint 3: It's alright to push an already-grilled half of a sausage over the edge.
Solution: Roll the vertical sausage up one space, then move it to the right corner and push it up one so that the grilled half is over the sea. Grill the other two sausages completely, leaving room for you to finish grilling the vertical one.

Fiery Jut
Hint 1: How would you solve this if you were able to walk next to the ends of the sausages?
Hint 2: What's preventing you from performing your Hint 1 solution here?
Hint 3: There's no reality where you complete this puzzle by pushing two sausages at once.
Solution: Push both sausages up once, then move the sausage further from the grills down two. Grill both.

Maiden's Walk
Hint 1: Think about what order you'll need to visit the grills.
Hint 2: The dock in the bottom left has a purpose.
Hint 3: You can't use the single grill to grill two tiles of the sausage without leaving half of it unreachable.
Hint 4: Just because there are two grills next to each other doesn't mean that you have to use both of them at once.
Solution: Move the sausage down and grill it only on the bottom tile of the double grill. Walk on the dock to roll it right. Pass the sausage vertically through the lone grill twice, then grill the last tile on the top of the double grill.

Happy Pool
Hint 1: How can we apply the way we've already been using single grills here?
Hint 2: How might we use just two grills to grill all four tiles on the sausage?
Solution: Move the sausage along the right edge until you can push it onto the grill. Push it across the grill, then roll it downwards to the next one, then push across again.

Merchant's Elegy
Hint 1: It's only possible to recover a sausage from the right grill if you roll onto both grills at once.
Hint 2: Any sausage that passes the left grill must grill another tile on it's way back.
Hint 3: Imagine the ways you'd be able to swap the positions of the sausages.
Solution: Move the left sausage up one and then the right sausage left twice. Move the left sausage down twice, then right three times. Move the completely grilled sausage off of the grill, then push it up so that it is extending partially over the sea. Finish grilling the other sausage.

Seafinger
Hint 1: How will you move the top sausage without being able to push it with your fork?
Solution: Use the sausage next to you to push both sausages across the grills.

Comely Hearth
Hint 1: You need to move the right sausage up to be able to pull it back onto the island. How will you do that?
Hint 2: This level is similar in principle to Seafinger.
Solution: Grill 3/4 of the other sausage while using it to push the other sausage upwards. Finish grilling the first sausage, then push it aside so that you can roll the second sausage downwards across the grills.

Little Fire
I don't have any tips for this. Just be careful :^)

Eastreach
Hint 1: The execution is somewhat similar to Infant's Break.
Hint 2: Be conscious of where your ungrilled sausage is when trying to grill your first one.
Solution: Move the horizontal sausage up, then use the vertical sausage to push the horizontal one onto the right grill. Go underneath the vertical sausage and move it to the left, then grill both sausages.

Bay's Neck
Hint 1: If you follow the most obvious sequence of steps, you hit a roadblock after moving the sausage downwards from the top grill. How can you avoid this?
Hint 2: In this case, the easiest beginning sequence is not the correct one.
Solution: Skip the bottom grill and grill your first tile on the top one. Move the sausage down twice from there, roll it to the bottom grill, push it up once, and bring it around so you can finish it on the top grill.

Burning Wharf
Hint 1: When approaching puzzles in this game, you often must think about not only how you'll get a sausage across the grills, but also where it'll stay while you tackle the rest of the level.
Hint 2: There's obviously not enough room for you to leave both sausages on the grills. In what order might you want to grill them?
Hint 3: What do you think the dock is for?
Hint 4: Grilling the sausages one by one won't work out very well.
Solution: Grill half of the vertical sausage, then bring the horizontal sausage to the dock and move it up through the right half of the grill, grilling the left half of the sausage. Bring the horizontal sausage around to the left side of the map and push it to the right, grilling the rest of the vertical sausage.

Inlet Shore
Hint 1: Look at the positions of the grills. What would be the easiest direction to push the sausages through them?
Solution: Move the sausages counter-clockwise around the island as you grill them.

The Clover
Hint 1: You need to grill one of the sausages using a different method to leave space for you to turn into the exit. Which sausage(s) can't be grilled in any other way?
Hint 2: Where is the most extra space for you to leave a sausage?
Hint 3: You need to finish grilling the vertical sausage somewhere else.
Solution: Grill the bottom sausage like normal. Bring the vertical sausage around to the top, then push it down once onto it's grill and roll it across so that the bottom half is grilled and it's resting back on the dock. Bring the vertical sausage down and around to the bottom sausage, then grill the top half of your vertical sausage below the bottom horizontal one. Grill the top sausage like normal.

The Anchorage
Hint 1: Your problem is likely that you can't grill the last tile on the last sausage because you've pushed it to the bottom island. How can you solve that issue?
Hint 2: The tile that you can't grill with the obvious approach is on the underside of the sausage in its spawn position.
Hint 3:If you can no longer reach a specific part of a sausage, is it possible to grill it ahead of time?
Solution: Instead of moving the last sausage down, first move it up and to the left so you grill one tile of it, then move it in line with the rest of the sausages. Finish as normal.
World 2 Part 1
I recommend starting the next few levels on your own before reading this part of the guide!! This world introduces a new mechanic: skewering the sausage on your fork. If you're confused about how the new mechanic works, you can head to the rules page at the end of the guide.

Sad Farm
Hint 1: Up until now, you've never had a solid surface to roll the sausage against. How does this change your gameplay?
Hint 2: Skewering a sausage on your fork makes it follow your movement backwards as well as forwards. What happens if there's no room for the sausage to move with you?
Solution: Push the sausage into the fence to skewer the top half, then slide it downwards to wedge it in between the two fences. Walk backwards to remove the sausage, then push it downwards against the wall. Walk around the top side of the fence so you can come down to the right side of the sausage, then skewer the bottom half. Scrape the sausage off on the corner of the wall, then walk around the fence once again to move the sausage down a tile. Roll the sausage to the right to grill it.

Emerson Jetty
Hint 1: The only way you can get the sausage to the grill is to move it through the top gap. However, there's a tree preventing you from pushing it from the side. How else could you move it through?
Hint 2: How does skewering a sausage change the way you can move it?
Solution Part 1: Skewer the sausage from the bottom left side to walk it past the tree.
Hint 3: Every pillar is placed with purpose. Think about where you can use them to skewer and scrape sausages, and find out how you need to orient your fork to pull sausages through gaps.
Solution Part 2: After getting the sausage past the tree, use the 1x1 wall tile to detach it, then move it up twice. Move it right once, then push it downwards against the 1x1 wall so you can skewer it from the top left side. Carry it to the right, then scrape it off on the pillar so you can leave it in between the two pillars. Push the sausage in to the right twice, then come around from the other side and skewer it. Detach it with the lone pillar to the south, then move the sausage around so that you can skewer it from the bottom right side. Carry the sausage past the next two pillars until you can detach it by the grill and grill it.

Cove
Hint 1: Until now, you've been able to think of sausages as being locked to a grid, where one face of the sausage will only be touching the ground every other row/column. How does skewering fundamentally change this principle?
Hint 2: If Stephen skewers a sausage while stepping on a grill, he will pull the sausage back with him.
Hint 3: If you're not able to reach a sausage against a wall to skewer it, why not try bringing the wall closer to you?
Solution: Line up both sausages to the right of the pillar, then skewer one of them while using the second sausage as an extension of the wall by walking on the grill. As Stephen walks backwards from the grill, the other face of the sausage should be grilled. Swap the positions of the sausages and repeat.

Rough Field
Hint 1: As you saw in Cove, you can skewer sausages to "lock" their orientation in terms of which side is face down. Since the two possible slots where skewering is possible have one block in between them, rolling a sausage from one slot to the other keeps the same face down. How can you change which face is up or down before you skewer it?
Solution: This may require shuffling the sausages around a bit. The basic idea is to leave one sausage in the gap on the right of the pillar, then use the extending half of the sausage as a wall to skewer your other sausage on. This allows you to skewer a sausage above or below the pillar. Consult a video guide if you're still stuck.

Barrow Set
Hint 1: Think of all the different ways you could get the sausages from the right side of the island to the left side.
Hint 2: Now consider the ways you might want to skewer a sausage (like from which side/half). Identify what surface you'd need to use to be able to do so.
Hint 3: Stephen doesn't have enough reach to get one sausage all the way through the lower pass. If only he could make his fork longer...
Solution: Push one sausage into the lower pass as far as you can, then use the second sausage to push it all the way in. Go around to the other side and skewer the first sausage from the top left side, detach it using the top pillar, then grill it. Skewer the grilled sausage from the bottom, bring it around, and repeat the process.

Fallow Earth
Hint 1: By now you should be developing a sense of which skewering orientations are possible and which are not.
Hint 2: If the sausage is skewered on your fork, it's not possible to put both halves at once on the grill and still complete the level. What does that tell you about the solution?
Solution: Move the sausage down twice, around the grill, and into the corner. Skewer it, step back to grill the top half, then walk forwards again. Scrape off the sausage on the right side of the island, then roll it around behind the grills and move it up so that you can grill the bottom half of the face opposite the already grilled one (so neither face of the sausage is fully grilled yet). Skewer the bottom half of the sausage and walk it back to the right side of the island, grilling another side on the way. Repeat the same steps to grill the last quarter.

Twisy Farm
Hint 1: The solution heavily relies on the way that Stephen moves when he is skewering a sausage.
Hint 2: Investigate how sausages behave when pushed by a skewered sausage with no wall around.
Hint 3: If it seems impossible to skewer a sausage in a certain way, it probably is.
Hint 4: If you can't figure out which sausage to bring first, why not bring both of them together?
Solution: Manipulate the sausages such that you can skewer the vertical sausage from the bottom left side, then push the horizontal one ahead of you at the first diagonal. With the vertical sausage still on your fork, walk the horizontal sausage until you can leave it by the left wall, then remove the vertical sausage using the first pillar of the second diagonal. Return to the horizontal sausage and position it so you can skewer it from the top left side, then move the vertical sausage onto the top grill in the same way you did with the first diagonal. Before rolling the vertical sausage over, use it to detach your horizontal sausage, then finish grilling both.

The Paddock
Hint 1: Don't overthink this.
Hint 2: The direction in which you roll the sausages to grill them will influence the side from which you can skewer them.
Solution: Push both sausages so that half of them are on the top grill of either side, then roll both downwards. Skewer each sausage from the top and scrape them off on the fence below. Swap grills.

Beautiful Horizon
Hint 1: Once you've rolled a sausage onto a grill, it stays there for good.
Solution: Line the sausages up in between the pillars so that the left one is one tile higher than the right one. Skewer the right one from the bottom left, grill it on the bottom two grills first, then unskewer it and leave it on the top two grills. Do the same with the other sausage, but after you unskewer it, leave it on the same bottom two grills.
World 2 Part 2
The Great Tower

Hint 1: Take some time to familiarize yourself with how stacked sausages work. You can also check the rules and mechanics page for more info. While this level is definitely intimidating and the stack mechanics can be a little confusing, you have all the tools and knowledge you need to be able to solve this level.
Hint 2: Take a look at how all of the grills are arranged, along with the placement of the ladders. You should be able to figure a rough order for where each sausage should be grilled and how they should be oriented.
Hint 3: Figure out how you're going to manipulate the stack, and how many sausages you need at each elevation.
Hint 4: If you're having trouble changing the way the sausages are stacked, try slowly replacing the bottom of the stack until you're able to separate them.
Hint 5:This level is basically one puzzle repeated four times in a row.
Solution: Separate the stacks until you have four stacks of two sausages of matching orientations. Slide each stack into one of the grill slots and push them all the way in. Starting at one of the ladders, step onto a sausage, push the higher sausage across the grill, then roll the sausage you're standing on across the grill (press in the opposite direction you want to move). Repeat this four times, traveling around the edge of the island in the process.
World 3 Part 1
Maybe I just got better at the game as I got to the later worlds, but I actually found this one to be one of the most difficult areas in the game. Most of the levels are about sheer fundamentals and sausage stacking.

Cold Jag
Hint 1: The end state of level should be pretty obvious. The challenge is getting the sausages to the grills first.
Hint 2: Familiarize yourself with what directions you can move when on a sausage at any given time. Also find out how you have to position yourself to get on and off sausages (it can be more challenging than you think!
Hint 3: When you try to move to the left or right while standing on a sausage, the sausage tries to move with you. How could you counteract this movement?
Solution: Push the two side-by-side sausages up against the wall with the ladder, then climb on the sausages. Roll the sausages to the right (by pressing A/Left), then use the two tile wall to leave the left sausage and stand on the right one. Push the higher sausage so that it is stacked flush with the left sausage, then roll the entire contraption (two sausages on the ground, Stephen and the third sausage on top) to the left until you can wedge the upper sausage between the pillar and the wall. After rolling further to the left, the third sausage will lock them into place, allowing Stephen to reach the ladder without the sausages carrying him away.

Cold Finger
Hint 1: Getting the sausages grilled is the easy part. The puzzle here is figuring out how to unstack them all.
Hint 2: It's clear that there's no way for Stephen to climb any higher than the ground level. If that's the case, you'll need to find away to push sausages off the stack from the ground.
Hint 3: Sausages have some pretty interesting behavior when resting solely on Stephen's head.
Solution: Walk backwards at the tower to make the top sausage fall on Stephen's head, then turn while carrying to separate the other two sausages, then move them around until they're all vertical and on the ground level.

Cold Trail
Hint 1: What does the L-shaped grill at the far right tell you about how the sausages should end up?
Hint 2: Think back to how you solved Cold Jag. A similar concept can be applied here.
Solution: Use the two vertical sausages to transport the horizontal one over to the L-shaped grill. You have to manually swap the two base sausages back and forth after each push to keep the horizontal one in the air. After the horizontal sausage has landed on the L-shaped grill, push all of the sausages forwards one tile, then walk on them to finish grilling them all.

Cold Cliff
Hint 1: Don't forget that there's a ladder to you're right as well. It's only one block deep, so you'll have to have a sausage below it to use it.
Hint 2: Take into consideration that a sausage can only travel over two grills at max. If you want to use the further grills, you'll need to bridge the gap to drop one there somehow.
Hint 3: You have to have one sausage grilled before you can grill the horizontal one.
Solution: Sorry for the weak hints here, this one is just plain difficult. Stack the two vertical sausages directly left of the grill, then roll the horizontal sausage so that both you and the sausage are on your two-stack, with the horizontal one extending out over top of the grill. Push the horizontal sausage off of the two-stack so that it lands directly on the grill, grilling a complete half. While standing on it, roll your top vertical sausage to the right until it's fully grilled, then use the wall to walk back to the horizontal sausage. Roll the horizontal sausage up and take the ladder, then grill the final sausage.

Cold Pit
Hint 1: Find a way to escort the vertical sausage across without it falling.
Solution: Push the horizontal sausage into the pit, then roll it down one tile so it's directly in front of the grill. Place the vertical sausage on it. with the bottom half touching the sausage below. Roll the horizontal sausage forwards, then grill the vertical sausage. Place the vertical sausage in the one block gap above to return.

Cold Plateau
Hint 1: The approach is somewhat similar to Cold Cliff.
Hint 2: The pillar is for you to unskewer sausages after you've carried them up!
Solution: Skewer the vertical sausage and use the pillar to stack it on top of the horizontal sausage. Roll the horizontal sausage so it drops the vertical one directly on top of the grill.

Cold Head
Hint 1: Only one of these sausages can come back after it drops down a level.
Solution: Roll the horizontal sausage into the gap to the left so you can bring the vertical one across and grill it. Fill the other gap with the grilled vertical sausage so you can carry the horizontal one back up and grill it.

Cold Ladder
Hint 1: Should you complete this level by standing on the sausages or pushing them from the ground?
Hint 2: At what points are you able to get off the sausages?
Solution: Stand on the left vertical sausage and roll it to the right one tile. Then step on the horizontal sausage and roll it down two tiles. Cross to the vertical sausage next to it, then walk in circles, first rolling to the left, then crossing to the lower sausage, rolling that to the left, crossing to the horizontal sausage, then repeat. This should move the horizontal sausage until it's lined up for you to roll back to the starting platform and dismount.

Cold Terrace
Hint 1: Pay special attention to the areas in which you can mount and dismount a sausage (no jokes, please).
Hint 2: Sometimes, you need to construct your escape bridge ahead of time when rolling on a sausage.
Solution: Use the first sausage as a bridge to climb the middle ladder and retrieve the left sausage. Place a sausage in the two tile gap at the top with another waiting in front of the right ladder so you can board from the middle ladder, then bridge across to retrieve the third sausage. To rescue the sausage in the two tile gap, place a sausage to the right of the lone ladder and use it as a bridge.

Cold Sausage
Hint 1: The first and last sausage you roll must start or end connecting to the starting platform.
Solution: Make a straight line of sausages across the middle, then put one sausage in the bottom right corner of the grill and another in the top middle. Stand on the first sausage and roll it up, then you can take it from there.

Cold Horizon
Hint 1: You have to make your return trip via the ladder, so you must figure out a way to get on the vertical sausage without it.
Solution: Roll the horizontal sausage down until it falls off the cliff, then roll the vertical one on top of it. Board the vertical sausage, then roll it to the left off of the horizontal one. Push the horizontal sausage and grill it, then roll back to the ladder.
World 3 Part 2
Cold Gate
Hint 1: Don't be intimidated! Like Great Tower, there's a clear order to how you must do everything.
Hint 2: If you lose your fork, you've messed up. That's a mechanic we'll be dealing with later.
Hint 3: Try and conserve your sausages in your stack. You should get to the large field of grills with a stack of four.
Solution: Roll the stack onto the first grill, then climb the ladder and move the stack up one space, so you're standing on the base sausage as well. Roll the entire stack further to the left, then bring it up and leave it between the two towers. Climb to the top of the stack, then face to the right and press A/Left. This should roll a sausage off the right side of the stack. Roll back towards the stack until you've grilled two sausages and are left with a stack of four. Keep pushing and rolling to the left until you've laid down all four of the sausages in a line on the grills. Standing on the furthest left sausage, roll backwards once to finish grilling all four.

Cold Frustration
Hint 1: All of the grilling should be done from the right side of the map (except maybe the final touch).
Hint 2: How can you get to the right side of the map while making every sausage still accessible?
Solution: Line up the vertical sausages directly to the left of the grills so you can climb the ladder, push the sausage onto the sausage link bridge, and roll it across to the two block wall. Afterwards, you can walk onto the grills to skewer the vertical sausages and manipulate them until they're completely grilled. Finally, push the horizontal sausage across the middle to start grilling it, and finish grilling it from the left side via the one-way path at the top.

Cold Escarpment
Hint 1: This one requires lots of planning and preparation.
Hint 2: Think of the two sausages as one unit that you're carrying around.
Solution: Put the horizontal sausage in the gap between the two tall platforms, then skewer the vertical sausage and carry it up top. Push the vertical one onto the horizontal one to create a bridge to the next platform, then climb back down and retrieve your two sausages. Repeat the same process, this time swapping the orientation of the sausages, to get to the bottom right corner. Arrange the sausages so that you can push the vertical one onto the grill with the horizontal one on top of it, ready to fall. Climb on top of the horizontal one and roll it across, then cross to the vertical one to come back.
World 4
Toad's Folly
Hint 1: The ladders here have a very specific purpose. What do they allow you to do with the middle sausage?
Hint 2: You can't knock the other sausages off the statues unless you get a little taller.
Solution: Grill the middle sausage, then skewer the left half of it from the bottom. Climb up the ladder, then use the tower to remove the sausage from your fork. Move the sausage so that it in line with the right side of the tower, extending over the lower ladder. Climb down the other ladder, then climb up the ladder covered by the sausage. This should place the sausage on Stephen's head. Climb down the ladder, then use the sausage on your head to knock down the sausage near the bottom of the map. Stack the sausage currently on your head on top of the new uncooked sausage on the ground, then grill the uncooked sausage. Repeat the same setup to retrieve the final sausage.

Wretch's Retreat
Hint 1: What has to happen to the vertical sausage for it to be grilled?
Hint 2: You need to find a way to spin the vertical sausage around to finish grilling it. What did we learn about how sausages behave when on top of Stephen's head in the last level?
Solution: Grill the horizontal sausage by skewering it from the right spots and dragging it across the grill. Grill half of the vertical sausage. Skewer the vertical sausage and then leave it on the raised area, with half of it extending out over the edge to the left of the ladder. Place the horizontal sausage under the vertical one, then nudge the vertical one off of the raised area so it is balanced on top of the horizontal sausage. Stand under the vertical sausage and then turn into the horizontal one so that you end up with the vertical one stretched out over Stephen's head and fork. Spin around and skewer the horizontal sausage (from the bottom), then use the tower to unskewer it. Knock the vertical sausage down from atop the horizontal one and then finish grilling it.

Sludge Coast
Hint 1: Sausage orientation doesn't really matter anymore now that we've learned how to spin.
Solution: Carry the vertical sausage up the ladder and leave it by the bush(?). Roll the horizontal sausage upwards so it's one space behind the overhang. Roll the vertical sausage on top of the horizontal one. While standing under the vertical sausage, push the horizontal one away, so the vertical one is atop your head and fork. Turn yourself and walk against the overhang to knock the now-horizontal sausage off your head. Grill both.

Foul Fen
Hint 1: The solution is pretty similar to Sludge Coast.
Solution: Carry the sausage up the ladder and then let it extend over the right ladder. Climb the left ladder while facing right so that the sausage ends up on your fork. Walk to the right one space, then descend the ladder and walk right until the tower pushes the sausage on your head. Turn and then find a way to knock the now-horizontal sausage off your head. Roll it onto the single grill and walk across. Grill the sausage, then bring it back around the bottom right corner of the map to exit the level.

Gator Paddock
Hint 1: Start by skewering the top left part of the sausage using the gap in the fenced in area as the wedge.
Hint 2: The sausage must go through the gap in the fenced in area.
Hint 3: The sausage will be oriented vertically upon completion of the level.
Hint 4: Use the ladders (and the 2-block high wall) to move the sausage until it is stacked on top of Stephen's head and fork.
Solution: Do what I say in the first hint, then carry the sausage to the ladders. Take the left ladder, then unskewer the sausage. Climb up the bottom ladder, putting the sausage on your head, then climb the right ladder. Walk up one space and descend the top ladder. Descend the left ladder. Carry the sausage around behind the ladders, taking care not to get it stuck on one of the blocks, then walk up against the right side of the ladder section so that you can align Stephen with the sausage. At this point, the sausage should be on top of Stephen's head and fork. Carry the sausage into the fenced in area. Stand with your fork over the middle grill and then turn left and back up one space. Walk backwards into the overhang and then turn to drop the now-vertical sausage on the ground. Grill the sausage.

Crunchy Leaves
Hint 1: If you lose your fork, you've messed up. That's a mechanic we'll be dealing with later.
Hint 2: You have to skewer the first vertical sausage from the left.
Hint 3: Both vertical sausages should be grilled in exactly the same way.
Solution: Place the horizontal sausage in front of the wall on the right side of the map so that it can serve as a wall for you to skewer the top left half of the vertical sausage. Carry the vertical sausage up the ladder on the left, then drop it off to the right of the small ladder at the top. Climb the small ladder, step on the sausage, and roll it to the right until you're right in front of the other vertical sausage. Bring the second vertical sausage down and repeat the same process. Once both vertical sausages have been grilled, move the horizontal sausage until you can skewer it from the top right, then climb the side-facing ladder on the left. Remove the sausage from your skewer using the small tower on the top right corner of the map, then grill it.
World 5
Note: This section initially had some of the solutions listed, but they were getting so complex that they took up too much space and were making this guide pretty difficult to finish. From here on out, I won't be including the solutions on the puzzles, because you'd probably be better served just watching it on YouTube.

The Gorge
Note: You may have discovered it in Crunchy Leaves, but this level introduces a new mechanic. If you can't figure it out or wish to learn a little more about how it works, check under "World 5" in the Rules/Mechanics section, specifically points 1-3.
Hint 1: All three sausages should be oriented vertically as soon as possible.
Hint 2: Take advantage of your smaller form when you're without your fork. You should make sure that every sausage is in an area you can retrieve it from before picking it up again..

Drumlin
Hint 1: You need to skewer these sausages to drag them into position. How might you accomplish this if there isn't enough room for Stephen to skewer all of them?
Hint 2: Mechanics page, World 5 point 6.

Tarry Ridge
Note: Get used to the fork-dropping setup with the stacked ladders that you did in Drumlin. I'll be calling it a fork-drop in my hints from here on.
Hint 1: Think about how you're going to use the rightmost ladder.
Hint 2: Start with a fork-drop using the vertical sausage. Be sure to line it up correctly so that you can get off the sausage using the ladder in the middle.

Rough View
Hint 1: The goal of this level is to find a way to get your fork behind the rightmost sausage.

Baby Rock
Hint 1: Mechanics section, World 5 point 7.
Hint 2: You need to stack the sausages, with the top one having a fork in it.

Open Baths
Hint 1: The only way you can fork-drop leaves your fork in such an orientation that you can't grab it from the right side of the map where the other vertical sausage is. How can you change the way the fork is facing without grabbing it?

Skeleton
Hint 1: You'll have to build your own platform to fork-drop on.
Hint 2: You should stack the sausages like a staircase to start.

Widow's Finger
Hint 1: You'll be grilling the horizontal sausage before the vertical ones.
Hint 2: While dropping your fork is required, you don't have to get creative with it.
Hint 3: You can use the ladder closest to the furthest sausage to free both vertical sausages from the ravine.

Slope View
Hint 1: There's some work to be done before you mess with the sausage closest to you.
Hint 2: To drop your fork, you'll have to engineer your own 2-block drop.

Land's End
Hint 1: Nearly every tile on this island is made use of in the solution.
Hint 2: Hold on to your fork.
Hint 3: Make sure you identify all of the spots where you can dismount the sausage, then find out how you're going to travel between them.

Crater
Hint 1: This level involves doing something that's usually forbidden.
Hint 2: Simply heading straight to the leftmost sausage and rolling it off leaves you with your fork dropped in a position you can't do much with. How might you leave your fork in a more accessible spot?
Hint 3: Skewer the sausage from the thin end.
Hint 4: Roll the rightmost sausage through the top grill first, then come around from the bottom and grab your fork to pull it back over the right grill.

Pressure Points
Hint 1: You can ignore the bottom right quarter of the map.
Hint 2: This solution involves using your fork in an unconventional way.
Hint 3: Use your fork as a stepping stone to board a sausage south of the fence.

Dead End
Hint 1: If it looks impossible, it probably is.
Hint 2: That overhang looks awfully close to the ladder.
Hint 3: Have you ever had the ability to take a sausage with you into the level? I wonder what possibilities that opens up...
Hint 4: Place a sausage underneath the overhang.
Hint 5: Use a sausage to catch the other sausage as you push it off of the new landmass.
World 6 Part 1
This section will assume you start each puzzle with sausages placed under all available overhangs.

Sea Dragon
Hint 1: Have a grilled sausage ready to catch the island as you roll the one supporting it.

Folklore
Hint 1: Check World 6, point 4 in the rules/mechanics section.
Hint 2: Your bridge won't go in between the two landmasses, but around the side instead.
Hint 3: Bridge building instructions are as follows:
1. Bring one of the side islands around to the bottom side of the center landmass and anchor it horizontally to the bottom island
2. Slide your group of two islands along the bottom, then use the free vertical sausage to make sure both of the connected islands have a vertical anchor to the center landmass.
3. Return the horizontal sausage connecting the two islands at the bottom to the center landmass. Now both bottom islands should be attached to the center independently of one another
4. Bring the other side island down to the corner, then attach the closer of the bottom islands to it (the connection will be North/South)
5. Shift your group of two islands on the side to accommodate the remaining island on the bottom of it. Place a horizontal sausage at the top and bottom anchor points to connect it to the further landmass.
Hint 4: If you're having trouble grilling all the sausages without losing any of the islands, it might help to temporarily "dock" the northernmost island on the top side of the second landmass.

The Decay
Hint 1: Your first move should be to move the giant pillar to the left.
Hint 2: You can only get on top of the dam when the sausage beneath it is on the left, but you can only reach the higher sausage when the sausage below is on the right. Is there any way you could move the supporting sausage from the top of the dam?
Hint 3:Skewer the sausage supporting the pillar from the right side so that you can carry it up the short ladder and deposit the pillar on the ground. Assemble the pillar so that you can nudge it to the right while on the dam, moving the supporting sausage.

The Splitting Bough
Hint 1: Check out World 6, point 5 of the rules/mechanics section.

Captive Hydra
Hint 1: There must always be a sausage under one of the heads.
Hint 2: If you're having trouble moving the platform around via rolling sausages, remember you can also push the heads directly to move it.

Rattlesnakes
Hint 1: A sausage won't roll when it's pushed by an object that it's also supported by.
Hint 2: Push the white dragon right once to allow it to roll the sausage.
Hint 3: Push the blue dragon right once to grill the final quarter of the sausage.

Sty
Hint 1: I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Just make sure you have a plan for how to get back onto the sausage to exit the level.
Hint 2: Grill the exit sausage, then leave it in a position where you can step on the other sausage, walk it across the grill, then cross to the exit.

Split Face
Hint 1: You can cross the gap using just the two platforms side-by-side.
Hint 2: The bottom grills should be used last.
Hint 3: The key to this level is using both the furthest sausage and the two platforms together.

Four-faced Liar
Hint 1: The goal is essentially to create a sausage-propelled vehicle using the statue thing as a body. Look at the path ahead-- what turns will you need to make for each leg and where will you need to make them? Use these answers to inform where you place the sausage.
Hint 2: Go north first.
Hint 3: Your first trip should have the horizontal sausage in the bottom right corner of the statue and the vertical sausage in the top left corner. At the other corner of the map, swap their positions.

Suspension Bridge
Hint 1: You can use the columns in the water to move the islands while you're on them.
Hint 2: Create a continuous path from one landmass to the other using the islands and the single bridge tile sticking out, then grill the sausages one-by-one, swapping grilled sausages for the ones supporting the islands.

Curious Dragons
Hint 1: This level is a lot simpler than it looks. Rather than describe it, here's a link to a beautiful rendition of how the dragons should be positioned.[imgur.com]

Ancient Dam
Note: In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult puzzles in the entire game. There also happens to be multiple radically different ways of completing it. These hints will only describe one solution, but feel free to experiment if you think you might be coming up with an alternative method.
Hint 1: A great first move is to climb the ladder at ground level in the top left corner. This will pull the dam out of the water so you can place it on the ground.
Hint 2: You'll want to use the hole in the middle of the dam to access the grills. To do that, you'll need something to hang the damn on if you remove the sausage from the center.
Hint 3: After you've pulled it out of the water, you can put the damn "on wheels" by placing the other sausage underneath the one going through the dam and then pushing the dam back over the water.
Hint 4: After following Hint 3, ride the sausage to the right so that you can hang the dam on the right cliff.
Hint 5: After grilling your first sausage, return it to the center of the dam. You can return to the ground level by riding it back to the left, then boarding the dam and descending the left ladder.
Hint 6: To replace the sausage in the center of the dam, simply have the ungrilled sausage catch the right side of the dam as you remove the grilled one from the center, then have the grilled sausage support the left side as you move the ungrilled one into the center. You can repeat the entire process to grill the new center.

Apex
Hint 1: Never drop down a level unless you're taking the ladder block with you.
Hint 2: You can get past the section with the double ladders by stacking the ladder block on the sausage, then putting the sausage on your head using the ladders below.
Hint 3: To get the ladder block to the final section, carry it on your head.
Hint 4: The two raised blocks to the right of the final overhang-statue thing are there for a very specific purpose.
IMPORTANT: Use the ladder block to return to the exit, not the sausage

The Stone Tree
Hint 1: Skewer the closest sausage to you to pick up the stone tree, then deposit it on land while you skewer the sausage from the opposite side so that you can anchor the stone tree to the right landmass.
Hint 2: You can nudge the stone tree up or down while standing on it using the one block high peg at the bottom. You also won't be grilling two tiles at the same time.
Hint 3: Don't try sliding a sausage horizontally across the single grill. It won't help.
Sorry about the bad hints here, this one is difficult to describe.
World 6 Part 2
The Backbone
Hint 1: Check out World 6, point 5 of the rules/mechanics section.
Hint 2: If they were one block closer, Stephen could use the pegs sticking up out of the ground to push himself while standing on the plus cube. Is there any way you can extend the reach of Stephen or the pegs?
Hint 3: Start the level with one sausage braced against the bottom left peg, then place the sausage that was holding up the plus block against the top left peg. Push off of the sausages while standing on the plus block to get to the right side of the level. Grill all the sausages, then place them against the pegs again to return.

Baby Swan
Hint 1: Isn't it weird how the dock at the bottom is just a little bit shorter than the swan platform and a little bit longer than it?
Hint 2: Lift the swan platform out of the water and then use the dock to get behind it and push it to the right side of the starting landmass. Skewer a sausage and step on the other one to bring a sausage atop the swan platform, then push the sausage onto the right landmass. Push the swan platform to the right so that it catches on the sausage.

Shy Dragon
Hint 1: You'll want to start with the sausages stacked on each other in a 'Z' formation with the other half of the bottom sausage under the left-middle tile of the dragon statue.
Hint 2: Roll the dragon onto land, then bring it around the left so that its chin is resting on the sausage stack. Separate the stack, then push the dragon statue into the water.

Lovers' Sadness
Hint 1: If you're having trouble grilling the final horizontal sausage, it might help to ditch one of the islands.

Dragonclaw
Hint 1: This works very similarly to Four-faced Liar. Just be careful with your sausage placement.
Hint 2: When you finish grilling your first sausage, get it as far away from you as you possibly can.
Hint 3: Grill your second sausage while rolling it from right to left.

Obscene Gesture
Hint 1: Lift the platform up and put it on solid ground, then use push the sausage to move the platform past the ladders. Put the sausage under the platform's overhang, then drop the platform onto the further landmass so you can bridge the gap.

The Nursery
Hint 1: There's definitely no way to get Stephen to the sausage in the top left corner. How might you extend the reach of his fork to push it?
Hint 2: Use the sausages as platforms to nudge the dragons onto land, then place one directly behind the other. Place the two dragons in line with the far sausage, then push them forwards with the fork to grill it.

Canal
Hint 1: Wouldn't it be convenient if these two islands swapped places?

Mommy Swan
Hint 1: Start the level with a sausage on top of your fork. You can use the ladders to do so.
Hint 2: Don't let the platform drop a level until you've rescued the sausage on the ledge.

Loft of the Spirit
Hint 1: To bring the sausage with you to the level, bring the sausage down to the leftmost raised part of the level you just completed to nudge it to the left.
Hint 2: Use a sausage to hook the boat(?) to the cliff on the right.
Hint 3: One of the grill tiles is a decoy. You only need to use two.
Hint 4: Take advantage of the fact that sausages don't spin when supporting the boat(?) or while pushing the supporting sausage.

Wobblecliff
Hint 1: Remember, the only solid ground is the green 2x1 space that holds the sausage. You don't necessarily need to keep all the other platforms, you just need the grill and some space to move, anchored at that one point.
Hint 2: The final solution doesn't include the blue and purple sections.

Plateau Ferry
Hint 1: You need a stack of sausages to catch the boat(?)
Hint 2: You'll want to move the boat(?) back and forth (north and south) to grill the first two vertical sausages (the free one and the one holding up the platform).
Hint 3: Refer to Hint 4 of Loft of the Spirit.

If you're having trouble reaching the final puzzle, refer to the final point in the rules/mechanics section.

God Pillar
Note: Don't go straight to grilling the sausages here. You'll be wasting your time. Try to find the other thing you can do here.
Hint 1: Stick a sausage under every hut.
Hint 2: Build a tower using the huts in front of the super high wall at the back.
Hint 3: If you're having trouble maneuvering a hut, you can always push against the super high wall to move it back a space. Also remember that there doesn't have to be any spaces in between each hut -- you can stack them all completely vertically if you want.

Congratulations! That's all the puzzles in Stephen's Sausage Roll. To see the game's credits, you can loop back to the very start of the game while grilling all of the leftover sausages on your way. I hope this guide was helpful to you! If you want, leave a rating :)
Rules/Mechanics of Stephen's Sausage Roll
World 1:
1. A sausage cannot be "pulled" back from its spot unless there is a standable space next to it.
2. You can grill sausages on L-shaped grills by pushing the sausage across the single tile, then rolling it onto the double grill.
3. Stephen needs a 2x2 area of clearance (the space he's standing on, the space his fork is, the space his fork will be, and the corner between them) to turn.
4. Stephen can always push a sausage if he can get his fork next to it. This means that he can even push sausages from around corners.
5. A sausage can only approach a grill if there is an empty space next to it.
6. A sausage cannot be pushed lengthwise across two grills.
7. A sausage can only be rolled twice over a double grill.
8. Walking on a grill will cause Stephen to return to the space he came from, but he still pushes objects with his fork.

World 2:
1. If you skewer a sausage that is lined up with Stephen (so that you take up three consecutive spaces), that sausage will never come off your fork.
2. Carrying a skewered sausage restricts Stephen's movement to sidestepping. His movement is largely the same as with a fork, but eliminates the need for turning clearance.
3. You can scrape off a skewered sausage against another sausage if that sausage is against a wall.
4. Two sausages stacked on top of each other in the same orientation will always move as a pair.
5. All stacked sausages will follow the movement of the base sausage when pushed (not rolled).
6. Stacked sausages will move forwards if its orientation is opposite its base when the base is rolled.
7. A sausage will always stay in place if there is a solid block directly underneath it when its base is pushed or rolled.
8. Skewered sausages still get grilled as expected.

World 3:
1. When standing on a sausage, it will always move opposite the direction you input. You can walk freely along the length of a sausage.
2. You can only leave a sausage you're standing on by walking along the length of a sausage to another tile, walking against its roll while a wall prevents its movement, or climbing an adjacent ladder.
3. Stephen can only carry skewered sausages up ladders if they are facing the orientation of the sausage (ie vertical sausages can only go up ladders facing N/S).
4. If Stephen is carrying a sausage on top of his fork, turning will drop it.
5. If Stephen is carrying a sausage lined up with his body+fork on his head, it can only be removed by skewering and then removing another sausage or walking under an overhang.

World 4:
1. Stephen can change the orientation of a sausage by carrying it on his head. This is usually accomplished through moving the base of a stacked sausage out of the way or climbing up a ladder with a sausage extending over the top of it.

World 5:
1. Stephen drops his fork when he stands on a sausage and rolls off a 2+ block drop, facing backwards.
2. Without a fork, Stephen must face ladders to climb them, and face away from them to descend.
3.Walking into his fork from the handle side will cause Stephen to pick up his fork again. You can still push the fork in the direction of its handle without picking it up by walking backwards.
4. Stephen's fork can be stood on. It also rolls off of sausages.
5. Forks can be left stuck in sausages, and can later be retrieved.
6. Stephen's fork can skewer sausages even when he is not holding it.
7. Stephen can grab a fork on the other side of a sausage by rolling it so that the sausage spins to him

World 6
(Spoiler warning for several puzzles here)
1. Leaving a sausage underneath an overhang will prevent it from sinking when starting a level.
2. Suspended platforms will immediately sink if nothing is supporting it.
3. A sausage suspending a platform can only be replaced if the platform is unable to move with it, or you push the new sausage while standing on the platform.
4. Attached platforms will only move when you push the only sausage holding it up. If multiple sausages are holding it up, you will push the sausage alone instead.
5. Platforms can be carried with skewered sausages.
6. (THE SPLITTING BOUGH SPOILERS)When standing on a movable object, Stephen can move it by turning his fork against an immovable object.
7. (PLATEAU FERRY SPOILERS)The overworld "remembers" the position of islands even after they've sunk.

Thank you for this! I, too, have been stuck on Backbone for years, and have even replayed all the previous puzzles as a way of keeping my mechanics knowledge fresh and helping seed new ideas to try. When I inevitably give up, I'll be using your hints to put myself out of my misery.

Thank you for the guide. Just wanted to point out the hints for Pressure Points are for an alternate solution, not the intended one.

the fact that you can give the exact solution to a puzzle in words and I'm still completely fucking dumbfounded as to how to do that in game is magical

thanks for the guide

I would suggest an first hint for "Anchorage" being something explaining the mechanic of how you can step on grills for a second to push sausages. I was stuck on that for a while just convincing my self that this puzzle was technically impossible.

Thanks for a great guide that made an occasionally impenetrable game very enjoyable! I suggest adding a note to World 3 mechanics that it's possible to dismount a sausage you're riding if there's a ladder you can reach
