Obtaining a Spirit Weapon (Outdated)

Simple guide to help you obtain a spirit weapon.

Spirit Types

Currently there are five types of spirit weapons, the Sword, Blunt/Axe, Bow, Wand, and Cylinder. Before you choose one though, I recommend you spend at least a day in play time in every class. After that, you should know what talents you like to play as, and may even know what you will Grandmaster. It's okay to have a spirit whom does not comply with your class, it doesn't even have to be something in your secondary equipment slot, as long as you enjoy having your spirit being what it is, you can be an Archer/Warrior with a Wand spirit for example. But be very careful with your choice, as spirit weapon transfer is very costly, requiring 575,550g worth of items, a spirit stone, and a 100 Proficiency Weapon to transfer to when switching spirit class(Sword -> Blunt), and 375,550g with a 100 Proficiency Weapon for a same class transfer (Wand -> Wand). Lastly, after choosing a specific weapon, make sure it can become a spirit weapon. You can do so here[wiki.mabinogiworld.com] by looking up your weapon. Beware that if you choose a hard to find weapon, it will be difficult to repair your spirit weapon, as reparing a spirit weapon requires a weapon of the same type unless you are willing to spend ~300 - 5,000NX on repairs.

Obtaining the Spirit

Now that you've (hopefully) chosen a spirit, you have quite the things to do. To begin with, if you're planning on using your spirit weapon frequently, make sure you can afford at least 20,000gold worth of spirit food(Weapons, Tools, Clothes, Armor) a day. If you are unable to, you may want to wait until you get stronger or find better methods of making gold. If you can do that, then here's the next step: Get your weapon of choice's Proficiency up to 100. This can be easily done through the mission Provocation(Tailtaenn) if you have tendering potions to spare. If not, fight many enemies that are anything but "Weakest" to you when you press Alt. Do not upgrade or you will be unable to turn it into a spirit, and enchants do not carry over to the spirit, so don't use those either.

Now you need 30 Elemental Removers, it is recommended to purchase them from Galvin at the Emain Macha Obervatory. He will sell them in stacks of five, and the total cost will be 30,000gold.

While you are still in Emain Macha, and now that you have everything ready, go talk to Aodhan at the castle within the city. Single Wield your weapon and use the Private Story keyword on him. This will trigger the "Ancient Spirit Magic" quest.

After completing the quest, talk to Gilmore at Bangor's General Store. Use the Ancient Spirit Fossil keyword on him and he will offer you a pass for 5,000gold to Barri Spirit Dungeon. Go buy a pickaxe or two from Elen(You can't miss her, on the way to the dungeon), clear your inventory and enter the dungeon. You may bring up to eight people. Keep in mind that the ore piles with spirit material are on the 3rd floor. Every Fossil you mine up will take 4cells of inventory, and you want to collect as many as possible, because the spirit stones they give are random.

After clearing the dungeon, go to Edern just outside the dungeon and use the Refine Spirit Stone button. After you have refined your spirit stone, head off to talk to Tarlach in Sidhe Sneatcha. Use the Spirit Weapon Contract keyword on him and you'll have your spirit weapon!

Only use male spirits for swords.
If you want to use the female spirit, you're either innocent, a dope, or somebody I should not trust with my kids.

I'd like to point out that people generally use each spirit type for different things. Cylinder spirits, for example, boost a LOT of alchemy skills. People generally use these to solo otherwise very difficult missions. Keep in mind that a lot of melee spirits are not as good as fully upgraded ones, at least not until you unlock Spirit Weapon Awakening, which can take a lot of time and use a lot of gold worth of items.

Also, it would be a good idea to learn how to get a bunch of gems. Each type of gem gives different stats to different spirits, with Diamonds catering to all stats. If you or someone you know is able to, spamming Martial Arts Tournament in Avon will give you plenty (Or you could spend hours training Mettalurgy).
