Setting up Vive Trackers for Avatars and Kicking Orbs
By jashan
This guide is there to help people who use the Vive trackers for feet tracking, or full body tracking (including waist, or even knees or elbows) to set things up. Feet-tracking is not required for Holodance, even the Avatar system works without it (also works with Oculus and Windows MR). But the more tracking points you have, the better the Avatar movements look. And with feet tracking, you can kick orbs, which is also kind of cool.

Full Setup from Assigning Tracker Roles to Calibrating Avatar
Here's a video that illustrates the whole process:
  • The first step is setting up the correct roles for the Vive trackers in SteamVR. This only has to be done once and then also works for other application that have Avatars, like LIV, for example.
  • One potential issue in this process are additional SteamVR drivers that break how SteamVR Input roles are passed to the application. For example, in the past, Natural Locomotion drivers broke this feature (this has by now been fixed).
  • Important if you use LIV: You need to switch on the trackers before starting up LIV. When LIV is already running when you switch on the trackers, they will not be recognized correctly by Holodance because SteamVR will not properly report the tracker roles to the game.
  • Once that's done, you can select an Avatar. All Avatars immediately use head and hand-tracking.
  • For feet and waist, an additional "Calibration" step is necessary. This is because we cannot rely on waist and feet trackers always being in the exact same position.
Troubleshooting
If the trackers are not recognized in Holodance, this is most likely due to the tracker roles not being properly assigned. Use these two steps to confirm everything is set up correctly.

If the Vive trackers still don't show up with the correct roles in Holodance, and you get the "Manage Trackers" display on the trackers, please contact us on the official Holodance Discord[discord.gg].

Verify that Bindings are there

You can use the controller bindings UI to verify that the bindings for the Vive trackers are actually there:

There might be a quicker way to get there - but here's how I did it, on this screen, I used the back button:

Then click on change controller:

And you should see the trackers with your role assignments (Left Foot, Right Foot, Waist):
