Introduction
Sometimes, when you're completing a game you don't need every scrap of ammo and weapons. Especially if you're playing on Easy difficulty.
Well, the Lambda Locator acheivement can be considered a joke acheivement if you played on Hard Mode and really did need all those crates and probably went searching for them.
Common Problems & Solutions
Convenience
If you played on Easy... you'll probably take that extra sanity you saved and throw it right out the window, because finding those crates and symbols is just as hard on any difficulty. Not to mention you can just barrel right through the game if you don't need to go looking for supplies. You will expectedly just activate the health and suit chargers you need, while raiding supply depots and assorted checkpoints, and abandoning potential acheivement progress (creepy dark alleys filled with zombies?).

-----SOLUTION-----
---> Bad habits are hard to break, so just play it hard and search every nook and cranny. Don't be lazy and simply rely on your gravity gun. Often there are ladders to approach a Lambda Cache. Most Lambda Locator progress will activate by stepping on the same surface as the small yellow-marked crates. However, if you still need your Gravity gun, pull - smash - pull to retrieve items from behind a solid fence. Each ammo, stack or box of ammo and suit battery is an item that can be gripped by the Gravity Gun.

Data Storage
As long as you have the game installed in your library, it should keep track of which chapters you've unlocked. However, should you uninstall HL2, you may have to restart the progress on Lambda Locator. Until you collect 45/45 Lambda Caches, it's an incomplete acheivement and you'll need to keep the local content on your computer until you finish, or you may lose progress!

-----SOLUTION-----
--> While the game is installed, enable Steam Cloud Sync from your Game Library->HL2->Alt. Click and go to Properties. Keep the chapters you've unlocked up-to-date. Make sure if files you're uploading are "more recently accessed or used" that the time of your access reflects a progression in chapters. Note that, once all the chapters are unlocked, starting a "New Game" at a specific chapter will not set your local content back to square one. You should still have all the chapters unlocked, and finishing a chapter will simply continue into the next one, or you can go back to the mini-menu and select a different one out-of-sequence.

Memory Maps
It's hard to remember the exact locations of generic items...especially when there are many non-event items that look like the 45 you need to collect for the acheivement.

-----SOLUTION-----
--> Pause to access the mini menu in-game. You can track your specific Lambda Locator progress unlike the Seam Overlay, which will simply say you are either close to acheiving Lambda Locator or not. Half-Life's Acheivements mini-menu [in-game] tells you how MANY lambda caches you already have out of the 45 total. You can also use process of elimination to avoid wasting time on maps you already got the caches from. Enable in-game notifications for acheivement progress. Use Steam Guides and Youtube videos to help you remember exactly where you have been and need to be. Pictures and images help more than text since the games relies on visuals to direct you to secret stashes.
TL;DR Solutions
-------------------------
Convenience
-------------------------
  • Always walk up directly to a Lambda Symbol and/or cache.
  • Search everywhere that isn't in a straight line...dark corners, boring alleys, pipes, tunnels, and more.
  • Lambda Caches in the same direction as the exit you will probably unlock as you unlock new chapters.

-------------------------
Data Storage
-------------------------
  • Use Cloud Sync. {Steam Library -> Games -> Half-Life 2 -> alt. click to access Properties}
  • Keep HL2 installed in local content until you finish or while you're working on Lambda Locator.
  • Find Lambda Caches as you go, or unlock all the Chapters first and enjoy the storyline before you go hunting.

-------------------------
Memory Maps
-------------------------
  • Check the mini-menu for your progress on Lambda Locator.
  • Enable in-game notifications for acheivement progress.
  • Use Steam Guides and Youtube videos to help find Lambda Caches.

Thank you so much for this guide. I did not realize that you needed to keep the game downloaded to retain progress. I lost 35-40 of the locations because I uninstalled some months ago.
