Intro
Hey, you probably clicked this on accident, that's ok. I'm an accident too. I want to preface this whole guide by saying I'm not an expert Devil May Cry player. But, I thought I'd give knowledge to people just starting to get into the series, and play a more refined Vergil (as of me making this ♥♥♥♥). Still here? Let's get started then!
The basics for brainlets
I don't think you're a brainlet, so I won't go too far in depth into moving, jumping and all that crap. If you are, then I'm sorry, this is for big bois. But for the sake of this being a joke guide, I'm gonna insult you.

Health: If you don't know this, I have one question, how did you even manage to get this game running, and select this guide? You have to genuinely have zero-knowledge to not know what this is. ♥♥♥♥ off.

Devil Trigger: The 3-10 stocks seen at the bottom of the health bar. You gain stock when landing hits, taunting, dodging and even getting hit. When you have at minimum 3 stocks of Devil Trigger, you can transform, (I refer to it as pulling a Devil Trigger. It's a joke. Laugh.) while in this demonic state, your damage increases, you take less damage, and even regenerate health. Once all of the stock has been used, the transformation ends. (Bound by default to the Left Bumper, or "LB")

Movement: Push stick, go that way, make progress. Pretty simple.

Jumping: Push button, go up. Also pretty simple. Pay attention to this, I'm gonna bring this up later. (Bound by default to the "A" button)

Melee: What's the point of packing a sword if you aren't even gonna use it? So... Use it. dumbass... (Bound by default to the "Y" button)

Gun: You... You do know how a gun works right? I mean... Vergil doesn't use guns... But he throws a bunch of summoned swords in a similar manner. (Bound by default to the "X" button)

Dodging: Y'ever played Dark Souls? Congrats, it's that but a lot faster and only happens from side to side. (Bound by default to the "A" button while locked on and moving side to side)

Lock-On: Ok, this is gonna be important so pay attention. You hold that button, yeah, that one, right there. You pressin' it? Congrats, You've locked onto an enemy. What? Another enemy you wanna lock-on to? If you don't have a controller, go ♥♥♥♥ yourself, it's harder than a pornstar on viagra on a keyboard. (You click the left stick btw on the controller.) (Bound by default to the Right Bumper, or "RB")

Switching Weapons: You can swap weapons on the fly to make your combos cooler, each has a number of combos and its own quirk. (Bound by default to the Left and Right Triggers, "LT" and "RT")

Taunting: With a well timed taunt, it can increase your score dramatically. But you will lose more style if you ♥♥♥♥ it up. Use with caution!

It's also important to note that when a directional input is given it is in response to where your character is facing and that some combos will require you to mash an input, pause in the middle of a combo, or use stock from your Devil Trigger Gauge
The boi himself!

Vergil in DMC3:SE was basically, "Do more with less". In DMC4:SE he has an actual full moveset like Dante, not just the commands for the playable boss with a control input.

Vergil, unlike Dante, doesn't have styles outside of his signature Dark Slayer style, I will get to that in a bit. He doesn't use guns, so get used to seeing those blue swords, that's your go-to ranged option.

Ok, enough of the foreplay. Let's begin for reals.
Trickster but for Chads
If you have played any of the DMC games past 3, you know that Royal Guard users are complete madlads and deserve to be praised. Swordmaster is a close second, but who hasn't used Swordmaster? Gunslinger is meh. But only the wettest of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mainly use Trickster. But Vergil uses his own style. The Dark Slayer style!

"But Red!" you might say, "Dark Slayer functions like Trickster in DMC3! Aren't they basically the same? I mean, the title of this section is 'Trickster but for chads'."

Well... No you dumb ♥♥♥♥♥. Trickster makes you run around like a stupid dumb fool, like you for thinking that. Dark Slayer makes you teleport!

"But Trickster does that too, Red!"

Oh yeah? Does Trickster let you stab a spectral sword into your foes letting them know that the end is near as you go VOOMSH and teleport to them before ramming your blade into their ribs???
No. No, it doesn't.

Dark Slayer is a vital component to Vergil's playstyle. You gotta get close, and do it FAST. Do you have to use it in combat? No, but it'll be a lot harder if you don't.

You have three different "Trick" actions, "Air Trick", "Trick Up", and "Trick Down".

Air Trick: By locking on and pressing the "Style" button (On controllers this means pressing: RB+B) you throw a Summoned Sword and teleport to the enemy the sword hit.

Trick Up: By just pressing "Style" (B) without a lock-on you will teleport upwards. No sword throwing here, just the act of teleporting upwards. (Similar in height to a basic jump, can be used as a double jump since Vergil lacks the "Air Hike" upgrade."

Trick Down: By locking on, pressing "Style", and moving the left stick AWAY from where Vergil is facing WHILE in Devil Trigger, you can teleport backwards. (I know, I know. It's a lot to remember, it's ok. I know it's scary, but you'll be fine.)
That thing that makes Vergil unique and epic
So, Dante has his Styles, Nero has the Exceed system, what does Vergil have? He has "Concentration". Something displayed as a blue bar on your HUD just above your health. (as shown below.)

What it does: What Concentration does is that it makes some attacks stronger and is required to use certain skills and fills up in combat. Fairly straight-forward. But that doesn't mean you can be an idiot. You can lose concentration. There are 3 levels of concentration, each one making those certain attacks stronger.

Losing Concentration: You can lose concentration in a few ways. Taking damage, missing attacks, and walking. When I say walking, I mean walking without being locked onto an enemy, if you walk while you are locked on, you don't lose concentration, just gain it slower. Taking damage is self-explanatory, if you don't know what that means, you're either brain-dead or a try-hard. Missing attacks is also self-explanatory, but does need some explaining, if you do a flurry attack (i.e. Million Stab) and you hit an enemy at least once, you don't lose any concentration, if you don't an enemy at all with one, you do lose concentration. Some attacks lose more than others, but ranged attacks lose none if they miss.

Gaining Concentration: Gaining concentration is fairly easy. Don't get hit, use your lock-on as much as you can, be precise, dodge, and use your "Trick" skills. Ranged attacks don't grant concentration because reasons. Some attacks give more than others. It's important for you to be in range of an enemy to build concentration, you can't just move to the other end of a room where there are no demons and expect to get the big boy moves easy. You have to actually play the game.

(Your Concentration won't decrease if you are outside of combat, but it won't increase either.)
"BUSHIDO, DIGNIFIED! IT'S THE LAST STAND OF THE SAMURAI!"
"Yamato" (Yah-Ma-Toe because the Reboot pronounced it Yeh-Mah-Toe) is Vergil's iconic sword. It's a fairly basic katana. EXCEPT it can cut through DIMENSIONS! HAHAHA! Um... Anyways... Yamato is one of the three methods of melee combat you have, and is in my opinion the most versatile in Vergil's arsenal.

Moves
(all need Yamato equipped to preform)

Combo A: Fairly basic combo (Y, Y, Y, Y), reliable, easy to preform, you'll probably wind up using it the most frequently if you're on autopilot. When Devil Trigger is active, this combo gains two more actions dealing greater damage with the risk of being more open before and after the last
blow ({in Devil Trigger} Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y).

Combo B: Needs a bit more finesse (Y, Y, [pause], Y), does more damage than Combo A, if you get hit using this you won't get full use of it, like looking at porn but your Christian parents catching you.

Combo C: Requires some confidence to use in the heat of battle (Y, Y, Y, [pause], {mashing} Y), Yamato's flurry attack, if used well, it can deal a ton of damage, makes you feel like a ninja afterwards.

Aerial Rave A: The go-to for off-ground combat ({In air} Y, Y, Y), if all three hit it can send any foe caught in it flying, fairly basic damage-wise, easy to do.

Aerial Rave B: A strong air attack ({In air} Y, Y, [pause], Y, Y), hits more, sends the enemy crashing to the earth, hard to pull if you're panicking.

Upper Slash: The basic launcher (RB+{back}, Y), sends most enemies into the air, if held, you will rise with it. Strong initiator for air combos. May rise with it more often than not if you aren't paying attention.

Rapid Slash/Rising Star: The charge/chaser of Yamato's kit (RB+{forward}, Y), you move swiftly through your foes, if held, will launch you and maybe your opponent, amplified when Devil Trigger is active.

Judgement Cut: A psuedo-projectile ({hold} Y until charged), a far reaching attack that needs to be charged before use, very cool and very anime, if timed perfectly during other combos, will deal more damage and skip the start-up animation for a quicker attack.

Judgement Cut End (AKA the big boy move): The screen clearer of Vergil's whole kit ({in Devil Trigger with max concentration*} Y+B), a lengthy move with a lot of requirements needed, deals massive damage to enemies, super satisfying, also known as "The Judgement Nut" because it's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool that you'll bust a nut.

*the Concentration bar doesn't need to be full, just the highest level, 3.
Float like a butterfly, sting like bee
Beowulf is the heavy hitter, it can deal a ♥♥♥♥-ton of damage in a moment at the cost of very short range. Fighting game characters wish that they could be on par with the power of Beowulf.

Moves
(Important to note that most of these moves can be charged to become stronger, how much depends on how much concentration you have. You have to have Beowulf equipped.)

Combo A: The basic 3 hit wombo-combo (Y, Y, Y), short, quick, strong, reliable.

Combo B: A flashy show of fisticuffs (Y, Y, [pause], Y, Y), rapid hits with lots of damage potential if they all hit.

Starfall: A downward kick that strikes like thunder ({in air} Y), fairly basic, quick, can give you some distance if timed.

Lunar Phase: A momentum filled blow as cool as it is deadly (RB+{forward}, Y), a personal favorite of mine, hits multiple times, looks cool, in Devil Trigger, gains a rising kick a the end.

Beast Uppercut/Rising Dragon/Dragon Breaker: A jaw-breaking upward punch (RB+{back}, Y), Beowulf's launcher, depending on how long you charge the attack it will take on any of the 3 variants, too many names, heckin strong.

Kick 13: A furious storm of strikes that'd make Chun-Li proud (Y+B), a quick mini-combo, not super powerful but gets the job done, trustworthy move, no direction inputs here.

Flush: Basically the "ScrewAttack" from Metroid (A), it's probably the weakest move in Beowulf's kit, but if you need a bit of wiggle room or just a tiny more damage to make sure Starfall finishes the job, it helps a lot.
Fun with Dad's toys
The Force Edge once belonged to Dante and Vergil's father, Sparda. While Vergil never managed to unlock the true power of the Force Edge, it doesn't make him any less deadly. Vergil uses the Force Edge in unison with Yamato to get the most out of each strike.

Moves
(All need the Force Edge equipped to preform.)

Combo A: The bread and butter combo (Y, Y, Y), if you pause a bit before the last hit and mash the melee button you can pull off a Million Stab, a basic sword combo, will do the job in most situations.

Combo B: A twin bladed assault (Y, Y, Y, {pause}, Y), my favorite Force Edge combo, you can mash melee to get more hits in and can even direct yourself if needed with the left stick, a flashy as heck move.

Helm Breaker: The definition of "Death from Above" ({in air} Y), it's a basic downward slash, it does solid damage, the only real air move for the Force Edge, otherwise it'd be Rebellion for Vergil.

Stinger: A charging thrust (RB+{forward}, Y), a very straight to the point move (pun entirely intended!), solid reach, trustworthy damage, the gud boi.

High Time: An upward slash that launches foes (RB+{back}, Y), Force Edge's Launcher functions similarly to Upper Slash, does more damage than Upper Slash but little potential for combos using the Force Edge alone.

Million Stab: Turn the enemy into a pincushion (hold Y during Stinger), a fast barrage with solid damage, a humble yet flashy move in the Force Edge's kit.

Round Trip: Remember that thing Darth Vader did in Empire where he threw his Lightsaber? Basically, it's that (hold Y), a solid zoning move, it hits fast and hit multiple times, useful to stall opponents while you start a combo with a different weapon.

Drive/Overdrive: The classic "Wave Slash" (Y+B), a short to mid range attack that fires twice, before the second slash if you hold melee you can charge up a stronger third slash that travels a short distance slowly that can hit foes multiple times.
The sword equivalent of infinite ammo
Swords are cool. Vergil thinks so. I mean, after all he likes them so much that he can make illusory swords that can stab people from a distance! Who needs a gun when you have unlimited ghost swords?

Moves
(Gains speed, range and number of swords when upgraded)

Summoned Swords: Throw a ghost sword with your mind (X), a far ranged attack, no D.T. stock needed.

Spiral Swords: Turn into a blender slicing and dicing foes (hold X), this will stay active for a while, and can even juggle smaller enemies that get launched, costs 2 D.T. stock.

Sword Storm: Swords surround your target (RB+{forward}, hold X), a quick pincer attack from a distance, I don't use it much, but use it all you like, costs 2 D.T. stock.

Blistering Swords: Summon your swords and take aim (RB+{back}, hold X), fast and hard, just like lightning, won't be fired until you let go, costs 2 D.T. stock.

Heavy Rain Swords: Make it rain on your prey (RB+{back->forward}, X), a bit hard to pull off for beginners, big damage at a big cost, anything caught in the attack is stuck until all of the swords summoned dissipate, costs 2.5 D.T. stock.
Still there?
Congrats! You made it to the end! I hope all my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was worth it and helped you learn a bit. I doubt it, but there are probably a ton of better guides out there. Not probably, definitely. But regardless, I hope this guide made you motivated!

Have fun, and stay stylish!

Yamato has been in the series longer than Rebellion, but the 2 swords have been in the same amount of games.
