Aka Manto Achievement/Item/Speedrun Guide

A guide to get every achievement, as well as key item location guides and a preliminary speedrun guide that is definitely not optimal but a good start if you want to speedrun the game for fun.

This guide will NOT BE SPOILER FREE, but spoilers are covered by a spoiler tag. Achievement order will be based on the order I think you should get them.

Overview
Aka Manto is a first person horror game that requires much puzzle solving in order to achieve one of the two endings. The first playthroughs will seem quite long because of how confusing the layout of the school is but once you understand where all the locked gates lead and where all the items are you can finish the game in 15ish minutes. I will try to keep this guide as SPOILER FREE as possible.
General Gameplay Tips
- You DO NOT die in one hit; it takes around 7 hits to kill you.

- "Sprint Stepping" (that's what I like to call it!) is the best way to move around: hold sprint for about 2 seconds, then release for one second and repeat, doing so should get you to your destination without losing all stamina. If your destination is close and you can make it there without releasing sprint, do it.

- Aka Manto can teleport anywhere, at any time. While he does use the red portals to travel these are very unreliable and he can be around the corner from you.

- In saying that, the red text that appears on screen when he is close is also unreliable. He could be above or below you. If you're going for the "Escape Artist" achievement then don't worry about it too much, only when the screen starts to get fuzzy does it mean he's close.

- If the floating mask sees you for too long, Aka Manto will come through the closest red portal to your location. However, most of the time you can easily hide or keep running away from it and it won't catch you.

- Aka Manto CAN NOT ENTER rooms if the door is closed, however he can exit them. If you're worried about him following you into a room, simply close the door behind you. The only way he can enter that room is if there is a red portal in the room.

- The red portals are actually a good sign because it means he's not in the area so feel free to sprint past them. Out of my many playthroughs through the game, not once has he ever come out of a portal that i've run past, he's only ever come out of them if i've been hiding near them.

- It's almost impossible to get hit by him on the library/cafeteria floor. If you run into him, simply turn around and run the other way. The floor is a big loop so you'll get to your destination anyway.
Puzzle/Unlocking Guide
In order to finish the game you'll need to solve a few puzzles, each of these will be spoilered so only look if you're having trouble. I'm going to write them in the order I think you should do them:

Fan Access: Enter the vent, turn right at the fan, go past the recording and take the second left, drop down the hole and pick up the Wires, unlock the door and turn left, go down the stairs and unlock the door from behind, then run into the power room and place the wires into the box. Switch 1 disables the first fan leading to the well, switch 2 disables one of the fans leading to a drop to the science room area, switch 3 disables the other fan leading to the library/cafeteria area. Note that you can do the entire pool area before placing the wires, as the wires are located directly opposite the bathroom described below.

Pool Area: Use the crowbar to break the boards at the farthest end of the vent (turn right at the first fan and follow the path all the way). You'll enter a toilet stall. Head out the toilets and turn right, making note of the boys toilets on the right just after. Follow the hall all the way to a wooden door which leads outside, pick up the Kerosene Pump located at the entrance to the pool. Take it back to the boys bathroom mentioned earlier, pick up the Bucket located in the bathroom, knock on the second to last toilet door to open it, use the pump on the acid toilet to get acid filled bucket, take the bucket to where you got the kerosene pump and use it on the lock on the gate to access the pool area.

Cafeteria/Library: Get the wires for the fans, place them in the junction box, activate switch 3 and go through the now disabled fan in the vents to reach this floor.

Shrine Room: Pick up the Ofuda Talisman in a set of drawers on the right side of the library, the head back to the starting hallway and use it on the door "locked by evil spirits".

Roof: Use 3 of the 100 yen coins to buy everything from the vending machine in the cafeteria, pick up the Milk and the Koppe Pan, turn right out of the cafeteria and follow it along until some stairs. Go up the stairs, turn around and go up the other stairs and give the 2 food items to Nagisa, who will unlock the door.
Achievement Guide
Insanity
Die many times in one playthrough

What the achievement means is to get hit many times in one playthrough, not die. You'll more than likely get this very early on while being chased by Aka. If not you'll probably get it eventually, it's one of the easiest achievements.

Sold Out
Buy every item from the vending machine

You need to do this in order to finish the game anyway. To buy every item, you need to collect 3 out of the 4 100 Yen coins during the game. Here are the locations of the 4 coins:
  • Bathroom/Pool Halls: After using the Kerosene Pump on the acid filled toilet, the coin will be in the toilet.
  • Pool Area: Sitting on a bench at the back of the pool area
  • Shrine Room: In the second drawer at the back of the shrine room
  • Library: Get the watering can from the pool area, use it on the pool to fill it. Go to the science area and grab the seeds sitting on the bed in the science room. Take both items to the library, use the seeds then the watering can on the flower pot sitting on a table in the middle of the room to get the coin.
Philanthropist
Help out the girl

Another compulsory achievement. After getting the above achievement, take the 2 food items to the roof area (located up a set of stairs around the corner from the cafeteria. Give them both to the girl and she will open the gate, giving you the achievement.

Escape from the roof

The first ending achievement. This is the easier of the two. To get this, you need to give all the anatomy items to the anatomy figure in the science room. Locations are as follows (and the rough order to get them, although you can do it any way):

NOTE: WHENEVER YOU PICK ONE OF THESE ITEMS UP, DROP IT AND THEN PICK IT UP AGAIN TO MAKE PROGRESS TO 2 OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS. MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS TO THE ITEM YOU GET AFTER COLLECTING ALL THESE PARTS SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPEAT THE PROCESS!
  • Anatomy Nose: Unmissable, located in the vent to the left of the two fans leading to different areas.
  • Anatomy Brain: Bathroom/Pool hallways. Exit the girls bathroom and turn right, then turn your first left and enter the wooden door on the right, it's sitting on a desk.
  • Anatomy Left Arm: From the previous one, go out the door and turn left and left again, enter the wooden door on the right, it's sitting on the shoe rack at the back of the room.
  • Anatomy Eyes: Pool area, in the changing room in front of the watering can item (door is located on pool side).
  • Anatomy Right Arm: Library, when you enter go into the side room to the right, sitting on a bookshelf.
  • Anatomy Organ: Library, you need to activate 3 secret books in the library (red books slightly sticking out of the the shelf). After getting the above item, exit the other door. The first book is on the first shelf on the left, then keep walking down to the second last big shelf where the second book is. The last book is near the entrance, on one of the two smaller bookshelves behind the first small bookshelf in front of you after entering the library. After activating all 3, this opens a secret room in the hallway. Exit the library and go whatever way you want until you get to what was once a big alcove, and is now a hidden room with the item sitting on the sink.
  • Anatomy Ribcage: Science Area, sitting on the teachers desk in the room opposite the science room.
Giving all 7 of these items to the anatomy model will give you a Rope which you can use on the big hole in the fence on the roof area to finish the game.

You will make progress towards this while going for the harder ending. You CAN get this in one playthrough (infact it's possible that it's required but i'm not sure) by giving all anatomy objects and giving all papers (detailed below). Here is a list of items to verify:

After getting the blue paper (see below), make sure to talk to the well again to get this achievement.

Good Ending
Kill Aka Manto

The harder of the two endings, you need to collect the 7 coloured papers and then place them in the shrine in the shrine room to get an item.

To enter the shrine room, you need to get the Ofuda Talisman from the library and use it on the doors "held together by demons" or whatever on the before the one you found the crowbar.

Locations of the papers are as follows:
  • Red Paper (Unmissable, starting bathroom taped to the door)
  • Indigo Paper (After entering the vent, turn left at the fan and follow it all the way to the end, turn right at the intersection and it's at the end of the path.
  • Orange Paper (From previous paper, turn around and go back the way you came, keep going through the vent and turn right once you see Recording 2: drop into the bathroom and it's in the second stall on the right).
  • Yellow Paper (Pool Area, take the Fishing Rod from the cafeteria, and use it on the pool to get this)
  • Purple Paper (Pool Area, take the stairs up at the back of the pool area to a little room with the paper stuck on the back of the lockers)
  • Green Paper: (Roof, located in the room behind Nagisa)
  • Blue Paper: (Well area, give 100 Yen Coin to the well then talk to the well again)

After giving all these papers to the shrine, you will get the Kusanagi No Tsurigi, which you can then use on Aka Manto himself when he appears to kill him.

Cleanup

Death By Centipede
Get killed by the centipede

You've obviously seen the centipede crawling around the vents, simply keep walking into him to get this.

Accidents happen everyday
Die from anything other than enemies

Simply keep clicking on one of the fans, or keep clicking on the acid filled toilet until you die.

Die Pests
Kill 20 spiders with bug spray

Bug spray is located in the last stall on the right in the womens bathroom on the second, the one that the final vents lead to. Simply walk around the school looking for spiders and use the spray on them. The further you are into the game the more spiders appear, and the best place to find them is in the Library, landing platforms (the small rooms that stairs lead to) or the side rooms near where you find the bug spray.

Listen to all the tape recorders

Locations of all Tape Recorders are as follows:
  • Recording 1: In the first bathroom, sitting on the sink. Unmissable
  • Recording 2: Enter the vents and turn right at the first fan, sitting in an alcove on the left, also relatively unmissable
  • Recording 3: Science Room, to the left of the anatomy model (if facing it)
  • Recording 4: Cafeteria, sitting on a table at the back right of the room near the Health Drink
  • Recording 5: Shrine Room, sitting on a shoerack on the left side of the room
  • Recording 6: Pool Area, Upstairs room, same room as Purple Paper
  • Recording 7: Opposite Science Room, sitting in a desk in the same room as Anatomy Ribcage
  • Recording 8: Turn right out of the Womens bathroom leading to the pool area, sitting on some sinks to the left headed to the pool area.
  • Recording 9: Library, sitting on a bookshelf at the far left of the room. When entering the library, go all the way to the back left corner and you'll see it on the bookshelf to the right
  • Recording 10: Roof, on the floor in the same room as the Green Paper

Escape Artist
Finish the game without getting hit by Aka Manto


Wew boiz, this is it. This achievement is VERY difficult. It's entirely luck based. Below this will be the speedrun guide and I recommend following that to get this, the difference being instead of taking hits from Aka, simply turn around and hide until he's gone. The absolute HARDEST part of this is near the start, in the hallways before the pool area. The problem here is that the hallways are very tight and he can spawn around the corner as you turn it without any notice. The mask also likes to patrol along here alot. We want to get this area out of the way because the Cafeteria and Library are far easier, and once you get all you need from the pool area and head there most of the danger is out of the way. The only other thing that can screw you over is if he spawns behind the roof gate while talking to Nagisa, which has happened to me a few times. I don't recommend taking your time, you want to sprint to get this done as fast as possible because the longer you play, the bigger the chance you have to get hit. So read the speedrun guide below.

So, to reiterate, instead of running through doors, if Aka Manto is near take the vents instead. I guarantee you'll be running from the pool area hallways back to the bathroom vent multiple times before you're safe. As far as the Cafe/Library go, if he's in front of you in the hallway just turn around and go the other way. Unlocking as many doors as you can helps because it guarantees you won't get to a dead end.
Speedrun (not optimal, but kinda good)
This is the fastest way I found to finish the game, as well as the best way to beat it without getting hit. Some notes (assuming you're speedrunning and not trying to not get hit).

1. If Aka Manto appears in front of you, just take the hit. You'll come across two health items during your run anyway so as long as you don't get trapped in a toilet or whatever you can just run through him and take the hit with little consequence.

2. Feel free to ignore the mask, you'll be either sprinting or burst sprinting so by the time Aka gets to you, you'll be long gone.

3. Watch out for spiders, being trapped by them wastes a lot of time.

4. We're going for the escape ending for multiple reasons: Eliminates the need to go to three rooms (well room, first boys bathroom, second boys bathroom)

5. While I took the vents alot of the time, if you unlock as many doors as you can when you get to them you can instead use them to save time at the higher risk of facing Aka. So whenever I say "go through the vent", you can generally just pick up your items and run through the unlocked doors instead.

6. You CAN grab the lighter, but you'll need to drop it at least 3 times to not have to make repeat trips. This guide assumes you didn't pick up the lighter, Ok boys, here we go!

1. Beginning: Run inside the start bathroom, grab the red paper and drop it, grab the old key, sprint to the door, unlock the door then drop the key. Run to the crowbar room, pick it up, run to the lighter room and break the boards, crawl through the vent and take the last left hand turn leading to the wires, grab the wires, unlock the door, go into the bathroom opposite and into the first stall on the right, use the crowbar on the boards, then drop the wires and the crowbar.

2. Pool Area: Head right out the bathroom, take a left into the hallway (aka may have spawned, if he has it's no big issue), take the anatomy item, head left out the room and left again, go into the wooden door on the right to pick up the second anatomy item, then run to the pool gate and pick up the kerosene pump, run all the way back to the womens bathroom, drop the two anatomy items. Head into the mens bathroom next to you, pick up the bucket, use the pump on the acid toilet, drop the pump and pick up the 100 Yen Coin, take the bucket to the pool gate, use it, drop the bucket then go into the pool area and grab the anatomy item and the 100 Yen on the far bench, return to womans bathroom.

3. Library: Drop the anatomy item in the vent, pick up the wires (inventory should be wires and 2 coins), turn left out the bathroom, run downstairs to unlock door to home hallway, place wires and activate switch 3, crawl through vent starting room, through the fan to library floor. Run straight ahead outside the vent, drop the 2 coins outside the cafeteria and keep running around to the library. Starting from the left side, activate first book, then cross to back right corner for second book, get Talisman from drawer, activate 3rd book then pick up anatomy item in side room. Exit library turning right, run to the former secret alcove and pick up anatomy item, then turn around and go back to the stairs, then down the opposite stairs unlocking the door to Science Area.

4. Assembling The Figure With all parts accounted for, drop Talisman outside doorways of science room, pick up anatomy item from right room, place 3 items onto doll. Pick up talisman again then run down the hall and downstairs, unlocking door to home hallway. Unlock Shrine Room, grab 100 Yen from drawer, then go to power room and flick switch 2. Exit right then right again, going through the previously unlocked gate to womens bathroom with parts. Run into the vent and pick up two parts, then go through the newly stopped fan and drop down outside science room, place 2 parts on figure, then run downstairs and back up the stairs to the womens bathroom again. Pick up the remaining item and crawl through to the fan again, finally picking up the nose youve passed a few times, drop into the science room again and place them, then grab the rope.

5. Final Stretch: With rope and 100 Yen in hand, exit right out of science room and run back upstairs to library floor, dropping the rope on the landing platform with the 3 sets of stairs. Run to the cafeteria and pick up the other 2 coins you dropped, use them all on the machine, pick up the 2 food items and return back to stairs, picking up rope. Talk to nagisa and give her 2 items, she opens the gate and you go through to use the rope and finish the game!

There you have it! You can probably complete the game in 15 minutes if you do this.

I can guarantee you in my experience he can not enter rooms if the door is closed. If the portal is in the room he can come through that, but I have tested this for a long time, I have stayed in the classroom near the second floor bathrooms, both bathrooms and all the rooms downstairs and he has never entered when the door has been closed. Maybe it's been patched since released, I don't know but I can safely say in my experience he NEVER came through a closed door.

At the beggining of the guide, tip 6 is not true. I played this game for 5 hours and everytime I close the door he will always go throught them if he can, doesn't matter if it's opened or not. I have a feeling that he can even see you throught the doors

Woah reallyy? Like right at the start? I played through like 50 times and that never happened, i'm pretty sure he only spawns once you flip the electrical switch next to the shrine room. I think you got bugged!

Thanks for the guide! The only thing is that for my version of the game Aka Manto will most likely teleport out of a portal if you are even walking past it. One time I just started the game and got the red paper and when I left the bathroom stall Aka immediately teleported to me and stabbed me. Oof!
