A hidden clan in the Scarlet Mountains, Clan Iolaire was thought to be dissolved after the Shadow War for a long time, until they are discovered again by sending a envoy to Falirson when he is marching in the Borderland.
Led by Aerest Steelbreaker and the Eagle King Thornand, Clan Iolaire is famous for their bond with the giant eagles, and thus targeted by the transmuter Caelos, who led a large group of pegasus and night mare units into the Scarlet Mountain to destroy them. After defeating the imperial air armada, Aerest and Thornand admitted Falirson as the High King, granted him the use of these giant eagles.

Imperial volunteers solves the problem anyway, you can go either of them without worrying about that. The main diffference is that Hunter version can get all kind of animals as volunteer and tame enemy ones, while base version provides more team buff choices. No you don't need his own aggressive skills, you should have your army doing that after the first few scenarios are over.

Which class is the recommended class for main character?
Warleader or Beast Master?
Beast Master seems slightly better since barbarians do not have access to much ranged choice!
Thanks

@Pale Jenova Since wolves are not included in skirmish barbarian arsenal, I put them in the neutral faction.

I have gotten wolves as barbarian units as well. Maybe they are a newer addition?
