The Culture Names List

Beschreibung
*** Caution: Absolutely NO Gravitas Contained Herein ***

*** v3.13.2 Update! ***
*IT'S THE ONE NO ONE ASKED FOR!*
- Sprinkling of new names!
- Still zero effort to the list issue!

A names list based on the fantastic Culture series by the late Iain M. Banks, containing most (hopefully all,) of the names contained in the books and further expanded by the internet, the people at r/TheCulture, and myself.

Best played with no ship prefixes (e.g. ISS, etc,) as each ship comes with their own designation as well as their own chosen name. Some ship prefixes may be found in unlikely classes, reflecting the happy way Culture ships modify their capabilities from the get-go.

Common Ship Prefixes:

SL - SuperLifter
FP - Fast Picket
VFP - Very Fast Picket
LOU - Limited Offensive Unit
ROU - Rapid Offensive Unit
GOU - General Offensive Unit
LCU - Limited Contact Unit
GCU - General Contact Unit
GCV - General Contact Vehicle
LSU - Limited Systems Unit
LSV - Limited Systems Vehicle
MSV - Medium Systems Vehicle
GSV - General Systems Vehicle
GSU - General Systems Unit
CSU - Colossal Systems Unit

Unusual Designations:

(m) - Militarized
(e) - Eccentric
MBU - Main Battle Unit (Homomdan)
ZE - Zetetic Elench

I didn't use your names. I used names from the Culture series by doing online research and finding the names. You don't own these names any more than I do. Iain Banks owns them, and if his estate asks me to not use them, I won't.

Once I had a training set of names, I then made a set of names up myself that sounded like culture names, because there simply aren't enough names in the culture series to satisfy the needs of a game like this.

Once I had this set of names, I used that to train an AI as to what I expected. This was not a "push a button" experience. I also spent 40+ hours of my time, for free, writing code that would translate the names into 9 languages so that people all over the world could use my name lists.

So no, I didn't download your names and put them into my name list. I didn't need to. It would be nice if, in spending all this time thinking about this, you also reached out and had a conversation.

After giving it a lot of thought (yes I am here I'm just a SEVERE Avoidant. Like, Gestra Ishmethit had the ideal life to my eyes...) Sorry, ah- After giving it a deal of thought, I'm not happy with the idea of allowing my names list to be put in with AI generated names.
The reason being; each and every one on my list are from an actual person, just like every Ship name in the books is from Iain M. Banks himself. These have a meaning, even if it's just a meatbag behind the curtain.
Pushing a button and getting a thousand names is not effort; it is pushing a button. You are taking a helicopter to the top of the mountain and asking me why I'm breathing so hard and carrying an ice axe.
I don't mind you building a list, but not with my names, thank you.

@mightynintendo thanks for the tip! I may do a Culture namelist of my own, but I've got about 6 or 7 in development (along with translations for localization) right now to add to my mod. I figured if that if Saturnine wanted this one to be updated and maintained I'd oblige. The author of US Grand Namelists doesn't play anymore and gave me permission to update and incorporate. About ChatGPT, yeah, my mod has one completely generated by ChatGPT, and I use it to either to look up information or generate names when a certain theme can't provide enough.

@Osiris i just wanted to mention that if you want to include Culture names in your mod you don't need permission from this mod's author. There is an existing ship name-list that's open source at https://theculture.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_spacecraft and characters are here: https://theculture.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Characters but there aren't really enough book characters in the series for a full game but now that ChatGPT is available one could probably get it to provide character names inspired by the culture series... Also: thank you for your work on namelists. i find the vanilla lists are incredibly unremarkable and it's really nice of you to provide tools to improve on this aspect of the game.

@Saturnine I have a writeup here to help deal with some of the things 3.6 broke with namelists. https://github.com/Osiris1975/namelist-mod-gen

I really should update, though I've had the game uninstalled for a bit.
I'll plug back in and get things up-to-date.

@Saturnine do you intend to update this mod for 3.6? Ive figured out the fixes for what 3.6 broke for my own namelist mod. If you don't intend to fix this may I incorporate your namelist into my mod with full attribution to you in the description?

@wtcw the names are based off the books by Iain M Banks that make up what is known as the "Culture Series" in science fiction. the name "culture" comes from what the dominant galactic power calls itself ("culture space", "culture ships", "culture lifestyle", "panhuman culture humanoid", etc. Ship names come from the ships themselves. all ships in culture space are built with a sentient AI that, as it grows and experiences the universe, will ultimately choose a name for itself or other ships will begin calling it something and the name just sticks. Because many of the minds like to amuse themselves with nonsensical humor, they find it silly and fun to name themselves in ways that catch common cliches and use them to say something about themselves or, alternatively, a lot of ship names are just message subject lines from emails sent back and forth between multiple ships.
