How to patch Gothic 1 to work without problems on windows 10 while keeping it vanilla

Required Fixes and Patches

Some might be in german, that is fine, point them to your install directory
\steamapps\common\Gothic usually.

1. Install Gothic 1 Patch 1.08k[www.worldofgothic.de]. If you have GOG version you might not need this since it's already installed. Press NO at first dialog box and point it to your install directory.


2. Install Gothic 1 Player Kit 1.08k[www.worldofgothic.de]


3. Install Gothic 1 Player Kit 2.8[github.com]


4. Install Gothic 1 System Pack 1.8[github.com] . Make sure to download G1Classic-SystemPack-1.8. Pick one language only.



You are now done with the basic patches. These will allow you to run the game on a modern system.

Run the game once so that .ini files are created. Configure your ingame settings and exit the game.

Now we can configure the .ini in the system folder.

Gothic\system\gothic.ini

Recommended changes

playLogoVideos from 1 to 0 //disables the logo videos that play at startup

Gothic\system\systempack.ini

BorderlessWindow from 0 to 1 //runs game in borderless mode, might cost you some performance and may have issues.
Gothic2_Control from 0 to 1 //one click to open chests, talk to npc etc. Combat is the same

FPS_Limit=0 //self explanatory, 0 is unlimited. Suggest to put your favorite FPS rate here, I used 144. Will fix some issues like inventory items spinning like crazy in the UI

SPAWN_INSERTRANGE=4500
SPAWN_REMOVERANGE=5000
SPAWN_INSERTTIME_MAX=1000
SmoothAniDistance=5000

These control the distance the NPC apear. Warning though, they might start to fight each other while you are too far away, so don't go overboard. 6000/6500/1000/6500 works fine

OutDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier=1
InDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier=1
WoodPortalDistanceMultiplier=1 //Setting these settings to 2 or 3 will get rid of some object pop in.
DrawDistanceMultiplier=1 //overall draw distance. Can change to 2 or 3 but not needed that much (removes the fog)

Animated_Inventory=1 //you can change this to 0 to stop inventory items for spinning in the UI window

Scale=1 //this is your interface scale, I find that 1.4-1.6 works fine on 1080p

Optional Fixes and Patches

This section will deal with optional stuff, like texture patches and unofficial fixes. For this guide sake I will keep it as close to vanilla as possible.

Gothic 1 3D + Mesh-patch 2.0[www.worldofgothic.de]. This patch makes some object appear rounder. It shouldn't conflict with other stuff.



IN EXTREMO[www.rpgwatch.com]. This adds IN EXTREMO concert back in the game at the start of chapter 2.

Texture Patches

Texture pack By Artemiano[drive.google.com] //lots of versions of this pack around the internet's, I personally use this one

Carnage Graphic Patch[forum.worldofplayers.de]

Gothic Weapons Rebuilt[www.nexusmods.com]

Default bars[drive.google.com] //some texture packs will change loading/hp/mana bars. If you don't like that but still like the mod, just install this one along the texture mod to revert to default loading/hp/mana bars


These all work with each other without problems. The .vdf files go in data folder. Can be installed and uninstalled at any time, so feel free to experiment with other texture packs. Just delete the .vdf files and it's gone. If you use 2 or more packs that change the same texture, the one that was created last will take effect (as in the file timestamp, not when you copy it in data folder)

D3D11 for Gothic 1/2 (DX11)

You can find it here[www.worldofgothic.de] but I do not recommend it for Gothic 1. It's fairly buggy and can cause crashes. A new version is being worked on as of dec 2019, you can follow it here[forum.worldofplayers.de]. The thread is in german, use google translate

If you followed everything in this thread you should see this when you start the game



Remember you can only play 1 mod at a time and saves are per mod only. So make sure you start Gothic UnPatch version. You can find other mods on the forums over at World Of Gothic, it's a german site but it's where the community is nowdays. Using google translate will allow you to understand the threads, but make sure it fits with your language, as installing a mod in german on an english version of English won't magically translate the mod.

I recently started playing Gothic from Steam. Is there a way to determine what mods/patches are already installed by default. The game version is 1.08k_mod(SP 1.8) but I'm not sure if that already includes the texture pack and the DX11 support. Any help would be appreciated.
