Description
This guide will teach you how to use a MIDI Keyboard or controller as a gaming controller for Frederic games and any other rhythm game. The only materials needed are a MIDI USB controller or keyboard and MIDIKey2Key software.
Finding a MIDI Keyboard/Controller (If you don't already have one)
If you already have a MIDI Keyboard, you can skip this step.

There are tons of MIDI controllers, and you may not know which one to buy.

If you are buying a keyboard for the sole purpose of playing Frederic, you don't need many keys. While you probably won't be able to find a one octave keyboard, there are a ton of two and three octave MIDI controllers.

I recommend the MIDIPlus AKM 320. This is the MIDI controller I use for Frederic and it is relatively inexpensive. You can buy it on Amazon here[www.amazon.com]

Heres a picture of my AKM320

It has F5-B5 right in the middle of the keyboard, which is perfect for Frederic games.
MIDIKey2Key Setup
I'm assuming you already know how to download and install software. If you don't, you're SOL. Google it or something.

You can download MIDIKey2Key here[75r.de]. I've checked it for malware, and it seems to be safe. If you find something else, let me know.

  1. Once MK2K is installed, open it. Go to File, New, and create a name and save location. You should then be greeted with this interface.
  2. Go to Select Input Device and Select Output Device. Set both of them to your keyboard.
  3. Check Log To Window on, and press start.
  4. Press a key on your keyboard, and you should see things pop up in the log. Double click the input that says NoteOn.
  5. A new window should appear, click on the blue box in the window, and then press the key (on the computer keyboard) that you want to assign to that key (on your MIDI keyboard).
  6. Check Wait for NoteOff on. If this is unchecked you will not be able to hold notes in the game.
  7. Save the input.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 for each key you need.
  9. Keep MK2K minimized with Listening started (Next to Log To Window) while you play.

You should be ready to start the game now.
In Game
All you really need to do in game is change the inputs. These are the steps for Frederic: Resurrection of Music Director's Cut, but the other games should be similar.

  1. Go to Options, Input.
  2. Click a key, and press the corresponding key on your keyboard.
  3. Repeat for each key.

You should now be able to play Frederic games with a keyboard. Enjoy!

Input lag is huge, in my opinion... It's just unplayable :(
