Description
A diverse and creative Chess system!

This mod is the resulting project & proof of concept of many hours of passionate rational work to gather and render accessible a large amount of many variant concepts for Chess, with modular integration, gameplay variety and compatibilities.

As most of the Chess variants and "fairy" pieces concepts are frustratingly scattered, I wanted to gather and compile them in a system which would allow to pick any at will to be played in configurable games. More informations on its website[customchess.wordpress.com].

While the mod targets the Chess fans, veterans and connoisseurs (knowing the rules beforehand would help), a unit's abilities and functions will be described when you hover over it.

Please leave a thumb up if you appreciate!

Designer's Notes

The mod allows you to play a many great deal of Chess variants to your liking, thanks to a large amount of units and boards.
You can also build your custom sets of units, thanks to their estimated CURVs.
As an exemple, the value of the FIDE Chess set on the 8x8 board is about 45.

CURV = Chess Unit Relative Value
Unit = piece OR pawn
Piece =/= Pawn
Royal = must be defended from checkmate to avoid defeat.

An army can have any number of royal units.
An army of pawns only doesn't need a royal unit (power to the pawnletariat!).
A royal unit cannot move/stay into check, unless there's another royal unit not in check in the army.

When it comes to balance, I had a look at all the values I could find, estimated/calculated by people more experts than I on the many Chess Variants web pages. Some values may have been adjusted slightly to fit better with the unit roster or modifiers.
While most units/modifiers and their values were not tested extensively, the overall balance should be rather coherent. Some units/modifiers currently lack value though, and some combinations might be too strong.
As such, you might want to enforce limitations for a minimum amount of units, a maximum CURV or number of modifiers for a unit, or even setup a banlist. Try things, any feedback is welcome!

The various symbols mostly come from Wikipedia, the board painter app from Musketeer Chess website, icon searchs on internet with some additional editings, or my own creations from existing templates.

New units, modifiers, or even special squares will be added in the future.

Is there a way to like...see the rules for everything here in an easy way? Like for pieces or what not? Some of the descriptions of pieces are not that great at describing what they do and they don't follow the terms you use in the man website linked. Plus stuff like ice isn't explained anywhere as far as I can tell.

How do I do that?

You were meant to use the nightrider tiny token as a modifier on the knight (or any other other leaper). The idea with this was to avoid unit doublons and grant flexibility, but considering the number of modifiers I've accumulated so far it's impossible to keep up and put them all inmod.
I have nightriders and other leaperriders ready to upload next time I'll make an update.

Sounds good.

For now though you may use other tokens as proxies to represent the underworld units, or I could upload tokens with suitable symbols at least, I'll have a look at that later.

I've made updates, changing the board selection. Now all new boards are arranged by shapes (mostly), are borderless and same-sized (like the grid) which means you can easily assemble and make different/bigger chess playfields. Also added a bag of cells to customize even more the boards. Btw nearly every boards/cells/units in the mod are sourced and existing out there.

In general though I prefer to stick to 2D stuffs only, since they can then be used in many ways for all other variants. Usually I deconstruct specific units (like the ones from Ultima & co) by turning their specificities into modifiers appliables to any unit - thus other movement patterns as well - rather than listing them directly. I think it's far better to have 5 units and 10 modifiers than 50 named units (and more with the combinations).

So likewise, 3D-only units feel a bit too specific to me. However, I can think of a 3D modifier like this: a unit acts as X on the lower board, Y on the medium board, and Z on the upper board. The unit's value would be (X+Y+Z)*1,1 with that slight overcost due to combination maybe. Another modifiers can be applied to each floor's move/attack. With such a method, one can comeup with pretty much anything, which is my aim ultimately.

Well, cutting some room off the edges seems like a good idea who need more room on the width/depth plane, but the main inhibitor for 4D (or the nearest representation that wouldn't drive someone crazy trying to figure out the board that the piece is on) would quite literally just be the absence of 3D boards, which in itself (as you said) can be mitigated by copying and stacking normal 2D.

That being said, I honestly don't know too many 2D chess games, but in 3D you should be close to Gary Gygax's (probably misspelled his last name) version of Dragonchess. If I remember correctly, you're only missing underworld pieces.
