By Wicke is best girl
This is a guide to help you figure which cars are worth putting time and effort into buying and which ones you should avoid since some cars in the game have speed plates on them.

Introduction

(TLDR: Lexus sucks in this game so I'm making a car guide on which cars suck in this game this is a work in progress that I will update as I play the game or am given relevant information.)

Hello there I have decided to start a guide for fellow car enthusiasts after spending hours "working" to buy my lovely Lexus iS 300 SE from a less than reputable car dealer that would not allow me the privilege of buying a Supra despite my having enough money to purchase it, I however thinking myself to be a more clever car enthusiast than the dealer, remembered that the Lexus iS 300 had the same 2JZ engine as the Supra of my dreams and I was allowed to buy it! Oh how excited I was to have not only my very own Supra powered car, but a practical luxury sedan, perfect for picking up my 3 model girlfriends or groceries, but little did I know until I took it to my mechanic to tune it up to a price tag so large I could afford another Lexus, that my wonderful iS 300 had been cursed with a speed plate that made my poor 300 stuck at it's stock 140 mph top speed. I tried everything to take the plate off I even bought another Lexus hoping it was simply a factory defect of my special edition, but it was all for nothing.... $80,000 down the drain I went back to look at other Toyotas hoping to find a car that would give me an edge at "work" it was then that the car dealer whispered in my ear "nothing beats a Supra." With disgust I left, vowing to buy each of his cars and tell the good people which cars are worth buying and which ones have been tampered with so that he may never swindle anyone else out of their good money.
(WIP) Toyota and Lexus
I strongly suspect Toyota may have wanted the Supra to be their highest performing car in game because so far through my experiments the Supra seems to be one of the few Toyota models to not have it's top speed limited which is clear from my early test results of my iS 300 having more HP and Torque than the Supra meaning irl it would be faster than my Supra, however in game my iS struggles even in easy races due to it's lack of top speed. My tests have concluded that both of the Lexus Models are a waste of money since they are locked to their stock Top speed as well as the high end MR2 being a waste of money as well since it's Top speed is also capped.

got the game a few days ago, as soon as i started the game and picked the first Suburu jsut for the lolz, wasn't planning on keeping it, played it at raw stats, liked it, decided to upgrade, now that starting Suburu is being my workhorse, topping at a 172mph and about some 430HP, i tried making it specifically for speed and drifting, dont know what went wrong, but i like how it is, wish pink was an option for color tho

this game can be un forgiving. i remember this game back in the day when it came out me and all my friends played it for days and hours and weeks. what we found out is the 350Z is a wicked awesome All motor money farming machine. leave it non turbo and just do everything else max. its wicked fast. the RX8 is also very very good if done right some tracks you never lift just full throttle its like glued down. the MRS is realy good in tight tracks lots of turns. the IS is the bigest pile of garbage in the whole game >:C. along with the MRS and many others there is alot of stinkers for sure.
back in the day on game console unlockable cars were sick because we played split screen and in the other game modes we also unlocked the corolla with upgrades and many others. in the story mode. those are also free. fun times playing split screen XD 😂
but no there are some really tough races in the end game

Also do NOT ever pick the Jetta GLS 2.0 as your starter car. It tops out at 113mph stock, then after you dump like 20k worth of mods to it, the top speed only increases by 2mph, meaning it tops out at a very disappointing 115mph. Even there were regular civilian cars that could go faster than said Jetta.

I can contribute much about it, if you want to.
The first Skylin('99 ver) has the highest possible top speed with all mods included making the suitable candidate for end game racing. Other versions like Spec Nur II is identical but 2mph slower.

I'd like to note that I chose the Golf 1.8T for my first car. The top speed is stuck at 135mph fully modded. I'm willing to help contribute to this guide as I progress through story.

i was wondering why you guys didnt consider unlockable cars as starting cars, i mean yeah its a secret but, you get them for free, and also with some upgrades

Subaru is a great starter that's really cheap to upgrade. add 20k and its 0-60 in 2.9s and tops out at 171mph.

1999 Eclipse is the best starter car. Don't even bother with the other ones, they all suck.
