Introduction
Hello My Name is Teleporter and I will be teaching you what you need to do to build a strong melee character early on. By following this guide, even loosely, you will have a MUCH easier time building your character and be well on your way to reaching the game's End Game content.

BEFORE BEGINING I RECOMMEND FINISHING ALL STARTER QUESTS
Getting Started
Before we begin be sure to have all your equipment blessed, Your items won't lose durability as quickly, it won't drop if you die and it lowers the chance of permanently lose a point of durability while getting it repair. Equipment can bless via Holy Water (HW) or Nao Stones. Before you take off Bring along Holy Water plus some Health and Stamina potions as well as some bandages and you should be good to go.

As for weapons I will leave it up to you. Any Weapon Mastery skill should be left alone for a least the first 100 or so levels. I'll explain why in a bit.
The Skills You need to train
Windmill (WM)-"No matter how skilled you are at close-ranged combat, it's never easy to handle multiple enemies at once. This skill helps you slip through dangerous situations. This skill is extremely useful, especially when you've been hit multiple times by the enemy and have fallen to the ground."
This is it folks, the most useful melee in the game! I can not overstate this. Windmill is one of the best skills in the game PERIOD. It may not seem that way at first, however at high level play sometimes it the ONLY way to deal melee damage to a monster as it ignores the target's Protection. Its also easy on the CP (Combat Power) and gives some amazing Str and Will Stats making it ideal to train early on.Its also much easier to train now so hop to it and advance it ASAP.

Critical Hit (Crit)-"If you learn to strike the weak points on your enemy, it's not so difficult to deliver only a few blows to end a powerful enemy that looks down his nose at you."
Adds Wills, increases Critical Hit Damage and is easy on the CP. Get it when you can.

All the other Combat Skills can wait. If you work on it you should be able to get WM to rank 1 at around level 150 ish. This will put you ahead of the curve of most at your level. Once you get WM you can start training whatever skills you like but I recomend serious training on skills heavy on the CP later rather than sooner. (You can keep Them at rank A or 9). But once its up to you just as its always been.

You can learn more about Combat power on the mabinogi wiki.
Where to Train
In the Dungeons or the Shadow realm. I have no idea what shadow missions are good for early training but I do know what Dungeons you can run.

Ciar (Total Lv 30+)
Three floors. The big threats here are the Red Spiders Goblins and Archers Fairly easy save the golem and metal skeletons at the end. If you not feeling up to it, just log out and log back in.

Rabbie (Total Lv 50+)
Three floors. The biggest threats here are the Skeletons. Luckily they dont multi arrgo so pick them off one by one. NOTE: Two Different Skeletons ie. a White Skeleton and Red Skeleton can both arrgo at you at the same time. The first two floors are challenging but third floor is trough. Once again if you not feeling up to it, just log out and log back in.

Rundal (Total Lv 125+)
Two floors. One of the best areas to Trains in the game! I spent SO much time in this one dungeon. By now you should seasoned dungeon runner so it might feel easier than Rabbie by the time you get here. The Threats are of course the Skeletons, Flying Swords and the Pirate Skeletons. The boss is a Cyclops. Once you get into a groove with this place the level jumps will roll right in and so will the money.

And there is always the Generation Quests (G1-G2, maybe G3 if you up to it.) G2 will grant you the ablity to transform another key skills at the higher levels.

There are other dungeons throughout mabi. I encourage you to explore them all, but please be prepared and be careful.
Final Throughts
I hope is little guide helps in some way. I might make some guides if people want them or when I feel like doing them. So thanks for reading.

No idea if you are still looking at this - any recommendations for how to train the Counter aspect of Windmill?

Certainly train smash after windmill. However with the new talent system training any skill is a lot easier.

Counterattack is also a skill to rank all the way relatively early, as damage potentail against certain hostiles can reach into the thousands.
