Basic Deckbuild Theory - Roles and the Engine

Welcome! Today I'll be explaining basic deck building theory, being what makes up a deck's engine and the roles assigned to cards, such as starter, superior extender, additional extender and more! If you seek to add a fresh complexity to your deck building, this can certainly help!

Introduction
Basic Deckbuild Theory - Roles and the Engine

Welcome! Thanks for clicking. Whilst not a consistent DL player, I am a TCG player who spends a lot of their time pondering and discussing the theory of the game. Deckbuilding is my favourite aspect of the game, so let's explore it past the basic roles of Spell, Trap and Monster. Instead, we can find consistency in our strategies in using different roles, being Starter, Extenders, Removal and more!

So, this is going to cover the basics of more advanced deckbuilding. I'll have further reading well after.

(Of note, an engine is a main part of a deck that enables plays. Such as Burning Abyss, has a Burning Abyss engine. Invoked which is more recognised for DL players, is the Invoked engine. Often, you can pair synergised engines with another, such as Invoked Mekk Knights in TCG, Burning Abyss Monarchs during 2016, the Brilliant Fusion engine, the Neos engine for Duel Links and the Speedroid engine).

EDIT: I HAVE A SEQUEL TO THIS GUIDE NOW, SO READ IT AFTER PLS. CHECK IT OUT!
The Engine
If you went head to head against another player's deck, without any traps like Fiendish Chain and any Trap Holes, without cards like Cosmic Cyclone and MST, and without hand-traps like Gorz and Effect Veiler, what would you deck look like? What is your deck, taking out all defensive cards.

It would consist of your archetype, or archetypes, with guiding cards that assist them, such as Mystic Tomato and Deep Sea Diva. That, is how you define an engine. It is the main driving force of consistency, synergy and enablers within your deck.

Let's look at an example!

Here's a 2014 Geargia list. Next to it, is the engine itself. No defensive cards.

To the right is the engine of the deck, but, what makes it tick?
Why did the player choose these cards? What role do they serve?
That's the questions we'll be answering!
Starters
Starters

Starters are the heart of your deck, they facilitate you into more cards and provide options! You need to play a good number of starters, as they're the best cards you want to see, since they enable your plays. They are versatile, have impact and give you numerous plays to handle any given scenario.

Checklist:
- Consistency, as you must be able to reliably use the starter, see the starter, or have a starter that increases deck consistency
- Be powerful, have a ceiling. A great starter is no use without powerful plays to make with it
- Versatile, you want starters with high amount of options to facilitate multiple lines of play

Here's an example of what a starter provides, Zoodiac Barrage lets you summon any Zoodiac from your deck, which in turn gives you access to more Zoodiac plays and searches. This 1 card, filters you into multiple cards, whilst also giving you options as to which. Here's another example!

Vision hero Vyon allows you to directly dump Destiny Hero Malicious, send Shadowmist to search, or dump and search for Polymerisation. It has a lot of options! You can make a strong fusion summon, or use it to unlock Rank 6 toolbox, which leads into Beatrice, allowing you to send any monster from your deck to the graveyard, giving you further lines of play.

What's important is both of these don't offer linear paths, but multiple lines of play. Decks want good, versatile starters like these.

Here's some direct examples!
TCG
- Sky Striker Mobilize - Engage!
- Souleating Oviraptor
- Armageddon Knight
- Elemental Hero Stratos
- Zoodiac Barrage
DL
- Vision Hero Vyon
- Aleister the Invoker
- Inzektor Centipede
- Noble Knight Medraut
- Darklord Ixchel

Superior Extenders
Superior Extenders

Superior Extenders are my favourite part of deckbuilding, they're the second part of your deck following your Starters, but tend to require a MINOR amount of set-up. However, they're extremely powerful, and can function as many other roles themselves, just with less generic requirements. You pair these cards with your Starter cards to EXTEND your play, hence the name. They are superior in their less set-up compared to the next topic, additional extenders.

As Yugioh progresses, cards tend to serve multiple roles, so often, Superior Extenders may serve the function of removal or starters also, depending on variables.

Extenders can be many things, but serve one role - raising your ceiling. Increasing the power of your deck, your plays and what you can do!

Checklist:
- Have minor amounts of set-up, certainly not on the level of Dark Armed Dragon
- Extend your line of play massively, must work with your starters
- Raise your ceiling
- May serve other roles

Let's take a look at a combo for a frame of reference!

This SPYRAL combo has it's starter card , SPYRAL Quik-Fix which allows you to search for any SPYRAL Gear, of which there are many. He is paired with the superior extender , SPYRAL Super Agent , which enables him to Link Summon for the deck's main card, as well as popping a spell or trap on the field. Super Agent requires no set-up, except for guessing the top card of your opponent's deck correctly, which the SPYRAL deck allows you to check and stack before attempting to call it.

So, looking at our checklist. Super Agent has minimal amounts of set-up, he works with Quik-Fix or any SPYRAL to make Double Helix, extending your plays, and also functions as removal and a starter himself because he gets to Double Helix. It ticks all three boxes!

Here's some examples
TCG
- Every single Danger! known to mankind
- Instant Fusion
- Gizmek Orochi
- Salamangreat Spinny
DL
- Legendary Six Samurai - Kizan
- Darklord Nasten
- Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind

Additional Extenders
Additional Extenders

Additional Extenders are the least consistent part of your deck, however, they are your most potent extenders, and let you reach lines of play that you would not without. They'll need much more set-up than a Superior Extender, but will give you much more potent plays. These are often searchable, and should be played to ensure the deck has a high enough ceiling, despite their risk in being weak draws, you do not need to run many, since you'll search them out regardless.

Checklist:
- Require set-up
- Ideally searchable
- High ceiling, extend your plays the most

Let's look at some examples, using SPYRAL as a reference once more. (I hope you don't mind that this combo portion looks pretty complex however)

Using the additional extender SPYRAL Big Red at step 10 that we searched earlier from our starter card SPYRAL Quik-Fix, we are able to revive our card SPYRAL Double Helix from the graveyard, enabling numerous other cards to go off.

Big Red requires us to have a SPYRAL in grave to revive, hence it cannot be used from hand directly, so it is an additional extender. We search it to extend our line of play, and it has a higher set-up to our superior extender, SPYRAL Double Agent, and it raises our ceiling, because it's a monster reborn, so it is an additional extender.

TCG
- Wulf, Lightsworn Beast
- Salamangreat Sanctuary
- SPYRAL Gear - Big Red
- World Legacy - "World Wand"
DL
- Invocation
- Darklord Superbia
- Blackwind - Steam the Cloak
- Ritual Beast Return
- Six Samurai United

Bombs
Bombs

This is the feeling when you topdeck Pot of Greed in Goat format. These are high set-up cards that will lucksack your opponent, whilst it may seem optimal to forego these cards for the sake of consistency, in doing so places you at a disadvantage against any deck that does. Bombs should have a game-ending impact, or put you much further ahead in the game.

Checklist:
- Intense set-up
- Wins games
- Things you want to topdeck or lucksack

Let's break some examples down.

March 2007, one of my favourite legacy formats! Why? Well, the abundance of Destiny HERO variants, the involvement of some Cyber-Style OTKs, the focus on Destiny Hero Malicious and our lord, Elemental Hero Stratos. This is a classic combo of the time, the usage of a partuclar bomb - Machine Duplication . To resolve the combo, you needed the starter Card Trooper on field, exactly two in deck, and the bomb, Machine Duplication in hand. This is quite a lot of specific cards! You activate Duplication, getting two more Troopers, and mill 3 cards with each. You're now at 5,700 damage, which is quite a lot, have thinned your deck to set up for another bomb, Overload Fusion and when your opponent destroys your Troopers, you regain your value and draw 1 card for each. Pretty powerful!

Here's some examples (from a variety of formats)
- Miracle Fusion
- Chaos Sorcerer
- Future Fusion
- Pot of Desires
- Super Polymerisation
- Super Rejuvination
- Snatch Steal
- Mystic Mine
- Machine Duplication

Engine Requirement
Engine Requirement
The wonderful feeling of opening your hand in the TCG and seeing a Gem Knight Garnet, or for DL, seeing an Elemental Hero Neos.

These are the "Garnets", named after Gem-Knight Garnet, these are the cards you run in your deck to enable amazing, better cards, and you never want to see them. They are, a brick in hand. You should still play great cards that have this cost regardless of adding a Garnet to your deck, as it adds to your consistency or ceiling.

Checklist:
- Seeing the card in hand makes you question your life choices
- A sense of dread is unfolded knowing you have the Garnet in hand
- You never want to see this. Ever.

I made him big, just so you can feel the intense dread of a player who drew him.
Such as myself.

Unfortunate Examples
TCG
- Gem-Knight Garnet
- Isolde's equip spells
- Speedroid Taketomborg
DL
- Bacon Saver
- Elemental Hero Neos
- Warriors for red-eyes fusion
Conclusion
Finally, with all of this knowledge, let's go back and take a look at that Geargia deck.

STARTERS:
Geargiarmor
Geargiarsenal
Geargiagear

SUPERIOR EXTENDERS:
Geargiaccelerator
Geargiano MK-II

ADDITIONAL EXTENDERS:
Geargiano
Call of the Haunted.

BOMBS:
Soul Charge

And, that's it! Thank's for listening to all of this, I hope you didn't see it all as pretentious, because it certainly changed my perspective on card games and more! There's plenty more to discuss, such as the sheer amount of discussion regarding removal, ceiling, tempo, defence, floodgates, etc, but this just covers the basics of engine card roles and such, and I hope you took something out of this!

I'll also attach some of my favourite theory discussions and profiles in relation to this, that I hope you go and learn from those too! It's a big list, more intended for you not to read it all, but take a look at topics you're interested in, so just see what you might be interested in. There's bound to be a lot of 2016ish era stuff simply because it's my favourite formats, but I sprinkled some retro and modern in there too!

Also, I run the TCG Noble Knight discord, join it if you're interested!

https://discord.gg/sgUVYBm

If you want me to elaborate on anything, just ask here in comments, or chuck me a PM on Discord and I'll be happy to discuss stuff! This is my first guide like this that's made for public, not just my own usage, so I'd adore feedback so I can continue to improve! If you want more stuff like this, maybe breaking down winning Duel Links decks and such, let me know!

The point isn't Link Summoning, the point is that they contribute to the deck in a certain way. The same factor applies to the bodies used to reach the Karakuri Synchros, Gear Gigant X or the Wind-Up Party Boat. I'm not telling you how to Link Summon, I'm telling you how to consider the monsters you use in a deck where you have an Extra Deck extender, which is plentiful in Duel Links also (such as the D/D/Ds).
