Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a game of deduction and deception for 4-12 players that plays in about 20 minutes.

In the game, players take on the roles of investigators attempting to solve a murder case – but there's a twist. The killer is one of the investigators! Each player's role and team are randomly assigned at the start of play and include the unique roles of Forensic Scientist, Witness, Investigator, Murderer, and Accomplice. While the Investigators attempt to deduce the truth, the murderer's team must deceive and mislead. This is a battle of wits!

The Forensic Scientist has the solution but can express the clues only using special scene tiles while the investigators (and the murderer) attempt to interpret the evidence. In order to succeed, the investigators must not only deduce the truth from the clues of the Forensic Scientist, they must also see through the misdirection being injected into the equation by the Murderer and Accomplice!

Find out who among you can cut through deception to find the truth and who is capable of getting away with murder!

Workshop Features
In this Workshop version of Deception: Murder in Hong Kong there are unique features designed to make the game run smoothly and efficiently. To get this all to work right I have scripted many tools to make this game a bit more host-friendly.

Setup Board
Instead of having to fiddle around with cards, and shuffling which cards you want/need to use, a simple checkbox system was created to select the unique roles you want added to the game. From there the remaining roles would be Investigators. Along with a helpful way of selecting roles we also gave you the ability to toggle Role Debrief for new Forensic Scientists, which just prints in chat what the Forensic Scientists should be saying, you can toggle between the original cards made by Bonk¹ or the modified cards created by Platypus & Nikos², set the clocks timer, and set the amount of means/evidence cards each player gets.

Forensic Scientist Queue
On the same Setup Board, a player can join the queue to become the Forensic Scientist. Forensic Scientist is just a host, and some people want to be them more then others so a queue system felt best to create. If a player joins the queue the moment their turn is up they will be removed from the queue unless they click Stay. Staying in the queue brings that player to the bottom of the list. If a player goes into Black or Spectator they will stay in the queue but will be skipped if they are not in a seat by the time Start Game is selected.

Voting/Card Ticking Mechanism
Players can tick cards to have a colored mark on the card to indicate that they are marking the card as a piece of evidence from the Forensic Scientists clues. In previous workshops of this game players had to draw lines to remember what items where decent to select but now you just need to touch the card. Drawing is still an option, and if you draw once the game is reset the drawings will automatically be erased.

A Forensic Scientist can if needed remove ticks from a card just by clicking it themselves. It is recommended that the Forensic Scientist does not touch any of the Means/Evidence cards during game play but in case a player (Murder/Accomplice) leaves marks on a card during their selection phase they have the ability to clear it.

Forensic Scientist Menu
When a player becomes the Forensic Scientist they will see a new menu that only they can see/use. This menu will give you the ability to blind/unblind whoever you need to. This tool is still in beta, being worked around until I deem it perfect but as of right now it is functional.

Thank you for this. I owned Deception in real life but ironically have gotten it to the table more often since the pandemic. In the past few months, we've played this mod several times with a group of 8 people and it's been stellar. It's also made us all realize just how much we enjoyed the game (I ended up buying Undercover Allies to add on for my future in-person game nights)!

1.6.4:
* Added 30 more Means and 30 more Evidence cards from various country expansions.

(also thanks @Extzy for the complement)

The best and cleanest layout for Deception IMO. Very customizable, quick, and no clutter with bunch of text or needless extra areas.

Thanks. great work!

@meniscus- Appreciate the suggestion, but at this time I don't think I will be working on the cards any time soon as I have spent far too many free hours already doing so for the latest Undercover Allies expansion in which I had to manually create 143 new cards. The amount of cards from that mod doesn't compare to the ones in this version so the decks can't be easily switched without removing content. Feel free to keep making suggestions though. I am all ears.

Hi Ugleh,

First of all, thank you so much for putting this mod together. This game has been one of the highlights of my quarantine and I've been so many cool people playing this game.

Next, a request!

Would it be possible for you to use the card illustrations from this other mod? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2010913990&searchtext=murder+in+hong+kong

They just look so much cooler

1.6.0: (using 3 separators now. What would have been 1.60 is 1.6.0, standing for Major, Minor, and Patch)

For detailed descriptions of these bullet points please click the Change Notes button above.

*Added Scripted Role Card Protection. Prevents players from accidentally revealing their role early.

*Added Blindfold Reinforcement (only if FS uses the menu). Prevents players from unblindfolding. Can be abused to see though (TTS issue)

* Murderer and Accomplice will be shown lines just like the Witness sees to help them + FS know whos who.

* Clicking on your Badge will announce to everyone that you are making a vote.

- Fixed bug when trying to play with Modified Cards.
- Scaled up the Forensic Scientist card and made it more obvious who's FS.
- Deleted "Victim's Personality" in Modified Cards, it was not professional.
- Disabled buttons in FS Menu if role isn't active.
