Wings introduction
After not having it updated for a while, here is the new and improved guide to Terraria wings and where to find them!

This guide focuses on the PC version of Terraria.

Wings are accessories that allow the player to fly temporarily and negate fall damage. They are only obtainable in Hardmode, with the exception of the Fledgling Wings.

Your world goes into Hardmode after defeating the Wall of Flesh for the first time.

There are some accessories that do not have the word 'wings' in their name, such as the Jetpack, Hoverboard, Skiph's Paws etc. These accessories act the same as wings, and will also be referred to as such.

As of the current version, 1.4.1.2, the total amount of wings obtainable in-game on PC is 46
Wings sorted by fly height
All wings have the ability to fly, some higher than others. The table below shows how high each pair of wings can fly straight upwards, counted in tiles.

Wings by game progression
Quick explanation of all terms:

Character difficulty:
  • Journey Mode, this is basically the sandmode of Terraria
  • Classic Mode, the standard difficulty. Drop money upon death
  • Mediumcore Mode, drop all items upon death
  • Hardcore Mode, drop all items upon death and death is permanent

World difficulty:
  • Journey Mode, can only be accessed by Journey Mode characters
  • Classic Mode, the standard difficulty
  • Expert Mode, has harder enemies. Bosses drop Treasure Bags
  • Master Mode, even harder than Expert mode and with more exclusive drops

World states:
  • Pre-Hardmode, the mode every world starts in by default
  • Hardmode, your world will convert (permanently) into Hardmode after defeating the boss Wall of Flesh. A new biome, The Hallow, will spawn and spread along with Corruption/Crimson. New enemies will spawn, and new bosses and drops are available.
  • Post-Plantera, after defeating the boss Plantera new and more difficult enemies will spawn in the Dungeon. New events and new bosses are available

For the needed materials and how to find them I redirect you to a different part of this guide, namely 'Craftable wings [Part 1-3]' and 'Wings obtained otherwise'. This section is just an explanation which wings you can get at different points in the game progression. I will list which wings are similair but for a complete list of similarities and differences between wings I have to refer you to the Terraria Wiki[terraria.gamepedia.com].

Wings obtained from Treasure Bags and the Celestial Starboard are only available in Expert or Master Mode and will not be mentioned below.

Pre-Hardmode
Fledgling Wings

Hardmode
Angel Wings
Demon Wings
Both wings have the same stats. They are better than the Fledgling WIngs

Fairy Wings
Fin Wings
Frozen Wings
Harpy Wings
These four wings have the same stats. They are better than the Angel and Demon Wings

Fishron Wings*
These are some of the best wings in the game. The only wings that can fly higher are the Solar and Stardust Wings, and the Celestial Starboard. These are also the only wings that can fly under water

*Even though the Fishron Wings can be obtained at this point, the boss that drops them, Duke Fishron, is very challenging. It is recommended to get post-Golem gear before fighting him

After defeating Queen Bee
Leaf Wings
Leaf Wings have the same stats as Angel and Demon Wings

After defeating either The Destroyer, The Twins or Skeletron Prime
Jetpack
The Jetpack is slightly better than the Fairy, Fin, Frozen and Harpy Wings

Bat Wings
Bee Wings
Butterfly Wings
Flame Wings
These four wings have the same stats. They are better than the Fairy, Fin, Frozen and Harpy Wings

Post-Plantera
Hoverboard
The Hoverboard is slightly better than the Bat, Bee, Butterfly and Flame wings. Hold DOWN + SPACE to hover horizontally, which increases your speed

Bone Wings
Mothron Wings
Spectre Wings
These three wings have the same stats. They are better than the Hoverboard

Festive Wings
Spooky Wings
Tattered Fairy Wings
These three wings have the same stats. They are better than the Bone, Mothron and Spectre Wings

Empress Wings
The Empress Wings are better than Betsy's Wings

After defeating Golem
Beetle Wings
The Beetle Wings has the same stats as the Bone, Mothron and Spectre Wings

Steampunk Wings
The Steampunk Wings has the same stats as the Festive, Spooky and Tattered Fairy Wings

Betsy's Wings
Betsy's Wings are better than the Steampunk Wings, but worse than the Empress Wings. Hold DOWN + SPACE to hover horizontally, which allows you to fly longer and faster

After defeating Moon Lord
Nebula Mantle
Vortex Booster
These two wings have the same stats. They are better than the Empress Wings

Solar Wings
Stardust Wings
These two wings have the same stats. They are better than the Empress Wings

Craftable wings - Required materials
To get the necessary materials for the wings, your world must be in Hardmode. Otherwise some monsters that drop certain materials won't spawn, while other monsters won't drop them yet.

This guide will go on under the impression that Hardmode has been activated.

All craftable wings, with the exception of 4, need a certain amount of Soul of Flight
These are dropped by the Wyvern mini-boss, found in the highest levels of the map (Space).

Depending on world size, it spawns at and above:
300 (small world) / 500 (medium world) 1000 (large world) feet above ground.
It can spawn indefinitley, as long as your character is at or above this height
After defeat it drops 5 to 10 Souls.

All wings, with the exception of 4, can be crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil.

The Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster, Solar Wings and Stardust Wings do not require Souls of Flight. They are also not crafted at a Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil, but rather at the Ancient Manipulator.

**Ectoplasm drops from Dungeon Spirit.
Dungeon Spirits have a chance to spawn after defeating an enemy with more than 100 HP in the Dungeon
Craftable wings [Part 3]
The following 4 wings do not use Soul of Flight
These wings are crafted by materials that drop from the Celestial Pillars and the Moon Lord.

After Golem has been defeated, the Lunatic Cultist boss spawns at the Dungeon entrance. Attacking him and subsequently defeating him, the Lunar Events are started. During these events, 4 Pillars spawn in the world. To defeat a Pillar, you first have to defeat 100 enemies that spawn around the Pillar. Each Pillar drops 12-60 of their respective Fragments, which is needed for the wings.

After defeating all 4 Pillars, the Moon Lord spawns. Defeating him gives you 70-90 Luminite ore with which you can craft Luminite Bars, which are also needed for the wings.
