Chapter 1: No, DOS is not a hacking program

Before we work with the mods, we have to update Doom 2 to a whole new level. Since Doom 2 was released when the universe was created or Soviets built East Germany, Doom 2 is running on DOS. An emulator program is required for modern computers to revive ye olde gaming. If you want to play
Doom 2 like your Call of Duty or Team Fortress, I recommend a new source port.

If you mod enough you'll end up like this.

Chapter 2: Woah bro, source porting

Since we're going to ditch DOS emulator to play Doom 2, we are going to need a source port. Now, some might go "The whatnow? Is it free? Who are you?" let me clear things up: Source port is a re-work of the game engine. In lamest terms; old games get in, get chopped, and glued again to keep up with the times. It ain't easy. There are a ♥♥♥♥ ton of source ports of Doom 2 out there.

Source porting is also a good way to get to ladies.

I personally use gzDoom because it's so simple you go "Well that was easy!" in a second. You can speed things up by downloading it from here:

Though some might want to play Doom 2 with their friends. I know I do! GzDoom DOES support multiplay but if you want something really good for multiplay I recommend Zandronum because it has a server browser:

Chapter 3: Smash the ribcage to start the surgery

Now that we have your favor of source port, let's get installing started! Now, first things first, locate your Doom 2 folder. Go to your Steam directionary and follow this path:

steam/steamapps/common/doom2/base

And there we are. The guts of your Doom 2. Beautiful isn't it? You can finger it if you want. Anyways, we're here for business. To install a source port, we got two ways. I prefer the failsafe method, where we delete DOSBox from the folder. Extract your source port to the folder, delete dosbox.exe and rename your port's exe file to "dosbox".

And cheers! You ported your Doom 2. Now what? You can get in the game and configure your keys and mouse and play on. Now let's finally get that mod!

Chapter 4: RIP AND TEAR, RIP AND TEAR

Before we call the night train to hell, let's talk about Brutal Doom. It's a popular mod that transforms your average Doom 2 into a blood shower fueled with gunpowder and flesh – the original planned version of Doom. You can get this from ModDB right here:

When you're done downloading, the file should be a .pk3 file. Get used to see that format if you plan to mod your Doom 2 more in the future. Now just paste file to the base, and copy its name. "Why?" I might hear. Well because we need it! Get out from the base folder to the doom2 folder itself. Do you see those 3 little .bat files there? WE DIDN'T ♥♥♥♥ WITH THOSE BEFORE. And yes, WE WILL ♥♥♥♥ THOSE UP TOO.

Right click and Edit both doom2 and doom2 + mouse and replace them with:

.\base\dosbox -conf -fullscreen -file yourbrutaldoommod.pk3
exit

NOTE: -conf is optional, not necessary.

....and Save. Don't forget to save. It's important.
