Since the beginning of the Second World War, many Cossacks (rightly) wanted to take revenge on the Communists. The first Cossack regiments in the Wehrmacht began to form.
The experience of using Cossack units at the front and in the fight against partisans proved their practical value. The German command decided to create a Cossack cavalry unit within the Wehrmacht.
The Cossack units retreated together with the German army from the Don and the North Caucasus were assembled in the Kherson region, replenished at the expense of the Cossack refugees and sent to the Polish city of Mlawa (Milau), where the warehouses of the Polish cavalry were located before the war.


Among the others, front-line Cossack units of the Wehrmacht arrived in Mlava: the “Platov” and the “Yunshultz” regiments, the 1st Atamansky regiment of the Wolf, the 600th division of Kononov. Among them were two Cossack battalions from Krakow, the 69th police battalion from Warsaw, the factory guard battalion from Hanover, the 360th Cossack regiment of von Renteln from the Western Front, etc. Created without regard to the military principle, these units were disbanded, their personnel was reduced to the regiments of belonging to the Don, Kuban and Terek Cossack troops. The exception was made by the division of Kononov, included in the division in full force as a separate regiment - the 5th Don. Through the efforts of recruiting staffs created by the Reserve of Cossack troops, it was possible to gather more than 2,000 Cossacks from among the emigrants, prisoners of war, and Eastern workers, who were sent to recruit the 1st Cossack Division.
