How to play the original NetHack through Vulture
By Rognar
This guide will help you set up the original NetHack to run on Steam as if you were playing Vulture. The only purpose of this workaround is for you to track hours played, since Steam Overlay isn't supported by NetHack application.

This guide covers the installation and set up of the Windows version of NetHack, but even if you're playing on Linux, MacOS, etc, you could try this method with some fine tuning here and there when it comes to the NetHack application.

Sorry if I can't help you through other systems installation.
If you have any issues with the Windows version, let me know and I'll try to aid you.

That being said, let's get started!
Installing everything
First of all, install Vulture. Now, download the latest NetHack build[www.nethack.org] and unzip all files into Vulture's folder (located at: steamapps\common\Vulture for NetHack) and overwrite everything needed.

Go to Vulture's folder and rename the application (.exe file) "Vulture-NetHack" to anything else (I've renamed mine to "abc"). Now you you must make a choice between two options:

  • If you want to play the ASCII version, pick up the "NetHack" application (.exe)
  • If you want to play the tileset version, pick up the "NetHackW" application (.exe)

I prefer playing with tiles, so I've chosen "NetHackW". Ok, now you've made your choice, rename the application chosen to "Vulture-NetHack" - don't put the ".exe" at the end or it won't work.
Enjoy your game!
Finally, click on the "Play" button on "Vulture for NetHack" in your library and choose the first option "Play Vulture for Nethack" and enjoy your game!

Note, at the chat/friends window, that now it shows that you're playing Vulture for NetHack. When you close NetHack, you won't be shown as in-game anymore, and the best thing is that you will be able to see how many hours of NetHack you have played through Vulture.

The only con is that Steam Overlay isn't compatible with the original NetHack, so if you want to share your in-game moments, take a print screen and upload it as an Artwork for Vulture. If you're not afraid of a challenge and want to upload it as an actual screenshot, follow this guide.

Bonus: The NetHack song!
