Introduction
The hex editing method is certainly the easiest way to add special characters such as @ and $ into Scribblenauts Unlimited, but it could be risky for someone not familiar with computers.

Here is a guide written by another Steam user for beginners:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=159661765
This guide is going to show you how to modify your Scribblenauts Unlimited game to allow you to type in any special character (such as @, $, %, !) by only pressing its corresponding key in-game. It's a fast and easy 4-step process, and does not need to be repeated ever again.
What is The @ Method?
The @ Method is essentially a way of obtaining the @ symbol in-game. This symbol was likely used by the developers to create objects required by other objects or cutscenes, and these special objects are now hidden to the public because the @ symbol is currently not usable.

Hopefully, if you follow this guide correctly, you'll get unlimited access to these special objects, and you'll even be able to create your own objects that cannot be accessed regularly without the @ symbol.

The objects accessible once The @ Method is used ranges from certain story characters such as Lily and Maxwell's grandparents, to a harmless fireball that doesn't disappear, to a carbon non-evil copy of Maxwell. There is even certain AI that take the form of presents. Let's dive in.
Hex Editors
Hex Editing is where you change raw binary data for any file or program. The Hex Editor I usually use is Translhextion 1.6c[www.romhacking.net]. This may not be the best hex editor out there but a fancy hex editor isn't really needed in this situation, just one that works.

Remember to make a backup version of the file we're about to edit, and in future, any file you edit. Just make a copy of it and store it somewhere safe.
Steps
  • Step 1
Run your hex editing program of choice and find the Open dialog box. Scribble.exe is the program we would like to open and it is located in the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Scribblenauts
You can copy and paste this into the address bar in Windows Explorer if you wish.
  • Step 2
If you're new to hex editing, all the numbers may confuse you or look a bit daunting at first. We only need to head over to a specific part of the file and replace a single number. It sounds easy, because it is.

Most, if not all hex editors have a function to jump to a specific place in an opened file. In Translhextion, this is done by pressing Ctrl+G. When the window appears to ask you where you want to go, type in this:
x136BF1
Then hit OK.
  • Step 3
If you have done this correctly, your text cursor will land on the number 41. Change this to 21, then save the file. Close your hex editor and load up Scribblenauts from Steam.
  • Step 4
Once in Scribblenauts, try to type @ into the notebook. If successful, you can now enter any object from the table provided below and possibly more.
@ Objects
Name

Description
@maxwelldummy
NPC
A carbon copy of the real Maxwell. Not the fake doppelganger with a blue hat.
@lily
NPC
Lily is a staple story character. She is Maxwell's only sister.
@lily2
NPC
Only usable in Edwin's Farm, spawning this object anywhere else will crash your game!
This version of Lily changes appearance depending on your current progress through the game, which is done by looking identical to the Lily standing inside the barn. She also never faces left when walking left, which makes for some crazy moonwalks.
@flare
Object
This object seems to be a fireball that has the characteristics of other standard objects and not the characteristics of projectiles. It causes no damage and does not disappear when it hits anything.
@... magic

  • blue

@monstermagic
Projectile
Will turn any living object into a random monster upon contact.

Object
An object version of Lily's Globe. Doesn't really do anything.
@meanoldman
NPC
The mean old man Edgar who was given a rotten apple and consequently almost turned Lily to stone.

A skeleton automatically set to its alive state.
@laserbeam

The beam that most lasers fire.
@scribblenaut
NPC
A pure white, faceless version of Maxwell. Creepy.
@andrewwarthenshirt
Object
An unwearable shirt.

  • dart
  • belt
  • hero

FAQ
  • It didn't work.
Try again.
  • Why use this @ method rather than the other @ method?
Because this method is a lot more convienient in-game. To obtain the @ symbol with this method is a simple press of a button. You could easily slip up doing the other method, and you'll frequently have to read up how to do it again if you ever need it in future.
  • I messed something up and now Scribblenauts doesn't start up or has problems during gameplay.
Verify the integrity of Scribblenauts Unlimited's game cache by right clicking Scribblenauts Unlimited in your Steam library and going to the Properties menu. Under the Local Files tab, click Verify and Scribblenauts should be perfectly normal again.
  • I do not see "Program Files (x86)" in C:\
If you are running a 32-bit system you might not see "Program Files (x86)". You'll have to look here:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Scribblenauts
  • There's more @ and $ objects in the game than in your list.
There is a wiki with a less-detailed but slightly larger list of @[scribblenauts.wikia.com] and $[scribblenauts.wikia.com] objects. I only included the objects that were notable. All of the description is my own writing, and it took a while to document them.
