Introduction
Hi there.

For the people beeing 30+ the Heist Big Oil seems to be a problem on the second day. There is also an Achiebment Doctor Fantastic that is part of the problem.

We made this as a way to figure this heist out and give a hint for all the futur players.
This is community based "work" so please comment on this, if you have a clou or idea to solve it.

The guide is now working and we are able to pick the right engine out of the 12 easily now.

If you have any concerns about the guide please comment. Maybe you have a way to descrpe the process easier and faster then we do, so let us know.
The Problem
Problem:
We need to find the working fusion engine and better find it in the first try (on day 2 of the heist), but we need to figure out wich of the 12 engines it is.
What we can find
Intel from day 1
On Day 1 of the job you need to get the adress of teh inventor (in the safe) and have the chance to get 3 assets for day 2 (you need to stealth it or be fast):
  • a key for a plane to escape
  • codes for the security shutters in the house
  • an intel on cold fusion
Only the thrid mentioned is valuable for the problem.

If you get the intel it looks like this:

This is a brief explanation of cold fusion. Maybe you knew this already and guessed it should be Deuterium in the working engine. We think the main hint here is not the explanation of the used and produced substances but the catalyst (in this case Paladium).
You basicly get 2 informations from this intel but the gas seems not always to be right, the catalyst however is always ok. Better see this as a hint and not a must have (i only managed to get one of those with a screenshot, showing it is kind of hard to obtain).

Engines on day 2

Here is what one of the 12 engines looks like on day 2:

  • The order of the parts will always be mixed also depending on how it is build up on the table.
  • The nozzles on the right are always in the same color and in the same order on all 12 engines.
  • The big blue Gastank is Hydrogen and will always be attached.
  • The color of the smaller gastank is either
    • green: Helium
    • blue: Deuterium
    • yellow: Nitrogen
  • The only instrument you can read of off, is the presuremeter of the main part.

The boards in the lab

There are 3 boards in the lab and they seem to be alike all the time you play the heist.

The first board shows you wich of the small gastanks contains what. This color-code helps you to identify the engine, when you know the used gas.

The second board shows a reminder. The CAS-ID 1333-74-0 is just the CAS-ID for Hydrogen (as stated on the board; in "reallife"). Does not seem to have any value.

The third board shows the 3 gases that are in the small gastanks in order with 3 catalyst (Titanium (Ti), Paladium (Pd) and Platinum(Pt)). If you know the catalyst from the intel you can compare it with this and see how much Hydrogen you need. As well as with the intel see this as a hint. For us only the connection intel-catalyst was right not the used gas e.g. for this picture: Titanium (catalyst) always with 2 H (Hydrogen; so 2 nozzles) but not nessesarily N (Nitrogen). Without the intel you won´t need this.

Computer in the lab

In the lab we also find several computer that might hold valuable information on their screens.

This one shows how to calculate bar presure into psi preasure. Its 0,7 to 10 (just like in "reallife"). This does not change ingame the formular is always the same.

This is a computer showing a PSI scale. And an actual number for it (in this case xxx or less). Be aware that this will always show a number and tell you if it is below or above that number. We encountered only 2 cases so far both around 400 bar (one and below; one and above). You need this to determin the preasure and wil always find this in the lab.

This one shows a dispution scaleing. Does not seem to help at all or change for that matter.

This one shows a lot of data but i think you can not make out anything of it. Unreadable do not care for that one.

This one seems also to be unreadable. No help from this one either.

And this is the third unreadable pc we found. Just decoration, no help for the puzzle.

Clipboards

There are also some clipboards with notes to be found in the house on day 2. With these found you won´t need the intel from day 1.
Note that you will only find the one for Hydrogen (1 of 3 possible) and one of the other 3 (Deuterium, Helium or Nitrogen), because they give you the hint wich gas and how much Hydrogen to use.

This one showing some information on Hydrogen. It also tells you 2 Hydrogen will be needed. You need this to determin the ammount of nozzles.

This is another example for the Hydrogen clipboard. This tells you to use Hydrogen 3 times. You need this to determin the ammount of nozzles.

Here should be another clipboard showing to use Hydrogen only 1 time but i lakc the screenshot.

This one showing some calculations on Deuterium. This tells you to use Deuterium on your engine. Look at the color-board for the Deuterium color (mostly blue).

This one showing some calculations with Helium. This tells you to use Helium on your engine. Look at the color-board for the Helium color (mostly green).

This one shows the notes on Nitrogen. This tells you to use Nitrogen on your engine. Look at the color-board for the Nitrogen color (mostly yellow).
What we know
Cold fusion should fuse Hydrogen to Helium ...
This requires Deuterium and/or Tritium to get the missing neutons ...
How you "want to do that" is part of how you believe it will work. I for one would assume Tritium and Deuterium to fuse to Helium and a single Neutron...
What we can make of this
The things we know from our "reallife" might not all be helpfull. So better to stick to some hints and deal with this a kind of "made up sience fiction". Also we should keep in mind that some of the variables will be changeable by the game, to randomise the solution.

We strongly believe one of the keys is the preasure.
  • You can read this on a computer screen.
  • You can calculate it into bar so you can match it with the engines (the engine mainpart shows preasure in bar).
If you look at the pictures above you will see the engine we search should have about 400 bar. But sadly we ffound 5 with that preasure (2 green, 1 yellow, 1 blue).

Another aspect of the solution is the color of the smaller gastank (or better to say the used gas).
  • Logicaly we would believe this to be Deuterium (blue) all the time but .... we just don´t know yet.
  • From what we saw and heard its most likely Nitrogen (yellow).
  • Our intel told us it is Deuterium.
  • The conclution is the clipboard found in the house, it will be one containing notes on one of the 3 gases.
  • If you get the intel you might also get a hint but do not take this as confirmed without the notes on the clipboard.

The third clue for this is the board with the catalysts showing the ammount of Hydrogen needed.
  • The intel from day 1 shows the catalyst (see above, for us its Paladium).
  • Paladium (Pd) goes with Deuterium (Hydrogen with 1 neutron).
  • The board for the catalysts also shows this to be linked with 3H (1H for Helium and 2H for Nitrogen).
  • This shows the ammount of Hydrogen needed (in this case 3).
  • Looking at the Hydrogentanks (big and blue) at the engines you see 1-3 nozzles going out to the main part.
  • As for the gas needed the intel is a hint, the confermation is a clipboard found in the house on day 2.

Conclution:
We are looking for an engine with
  • Deuterium <--- got that from the intel,
  • 3 nozzles connecting with hydrogen <--- got that from the board with the catalysts (in connection with the intel)
  • and a preasure below or on ~5k PSI / ~400 bar <--- got that from the compuer and calculated the bar ammount shown on the gastanks

Here 3 of the Deuterium engines we found. Note that all 3 are the wrong choice (see explanations).
This one uses Deuterium but only has 1 connection to the Hydrogentank, so its not the right one.

Same as the one above but it has only 3 (and not 2) nozzles, so still not the right one.

This one uses Deuterium and has 3 nozzles connecting to the Hydrogentank but it has a preasure way to high, so this will not work either.
Clipboard Locations on Day 2
On puplic demand i made this two charts to show the locations you can find the clipboards in.

These are the locations we found the clipboards on the lower level.

These are the locations we found the clipboards on th etop level.

In the lab the clipboards can be on ever table (the "free ones" as well as the tables with engines on them).
Solution aka tl;dr
(1) Getting the right gas (tank)
  • get the intel at day 1 and figure out what gas to use
    • it should talk of either Helium or Deterium or Nitrogen
  • the clipboards in the house on day 2 will also help to find the right gas
    • you will find one with spezific information about either Helium or Deterium or Nitrogen
  • the clipboard on day 2 will always have info on the gas you have to use and there is only 1 clipboard of the 3 possibile ones talking about the 3 gases
  • look at the color board to figure out what color the gastank has you find your gas in
    • this should always be the same and in the first room when you enter the cellar

(2) Getting the right ammount of nozzels (hydrogen)
  • get the info on the right catalyst from the info on day 1
    • just read through it you will find either Paladium(Pd) or Titan or Platinum
  • look at the catalyst board in the lab and see how much hydrogen nozzels your engine needs by compareing it with the catalyst you need
    • just go for the right catalyst and take the number at front of the H (for Hydrogen) in the same row
  • The Hydrogen clipboard will also tell you how much Hydrogen to use

Note to the catalyst/nozzles: If you fail to get the intel you won´t be able to determin the catalyst and need to work around this unless you find the clipboard(see below).

(3) Getting the right ammount of preasure
  • look at the computer and get the PSI number
    • for us it was always 5812 but it can change so look for it
  • calculate the ammount of bar out of the PSI
    • 10 PSI ar 0,7 bar so go for the PSI number multiplied with 1/10 and 0,7 (for the 5812 PSi its about 400 bar)

(4) FInding the working engine
  • look for an engine with the right color matching your gas (see (1))
    • there should be 4 engines matching this
  • count the nozzles at the hydrogentank and match this to your knowlege from (2)
    • there should be a maxium of 2 engines left now form the 4 you with the right gastank
    • if you do not know the catalyst/the number of nozzles skip over this
  • look at the preasuremeter on the engines and compare it to your calculation
    • the preasuremeter show the value in bar
    • there should only be 1 engine left now from the 4 with the right gastank, when you eliminated 2 via the nozzles
    • if you could not eliminate 2 of the 4 via the nozzels you will have 1 or 3 engines left with the right color and preasure

optional (5) Workaround for the nozzels/catalyst - eliminating engines by logic
  • not knowing the catalyst and therefor not knowing the ammount of nozzels will let you have 1 or 3 engines to choose from
    • the gas/color will always to be found on Day 2, eliminating all other colored engines (8)
    • the preasure can be found in the lab and calculated to bar at any time eliminatong ever engine with the wrong preasure
      • if you eliminate via color and preasure you will be left with 1 or 3 engines
  • if it is only 1 you are done
  • if there are 3 left, you need to compare them
    • the preasure will always be a value boarder (higher as or lower as), so it can only be "ok" or "not-ok" (beeing to high or to low)
      • the game does not give any better number then this it is just "ok" or "not-ok" so do not worry about the actual preasure value shown on the engine
    • in the worst case they are all 3 ok
  • compare the nozzels now and just count them
    • the engines should have 1, 2 or 3 of those
    • since you eliminated all via color and preasure already, the left 3 engines will only have 2 possible outcomes for the ammount of nozzels (e.g. 1 engine with 3 nozzels, 2 engines with 1 nozzel)
    • the 2 engines left with the same ammount of nozzles are not working
      • this is logical since they are both "ok" for preasure and both right conserning the gas, so as a player you could not determin them further even if you knew right the ammount of nozzels --> you would relent on luck only
    • the last remaining is the working one

Sticking to (5) you can do this without any intel. All you need is to find the clipboard mentioning one of the gases in the house and work with logical elimination of the wrong engines.

Side note (how we do this):
We do not bother to get the intel on day 1.
We just let 1 person calculate the preasure then bag all wrong engines (better and faster to see the other ones).
We look for the mentioned gas on the clipboard all around the house and lab then bag all the other ones, if we can find the board.
We look all around for the Hydrogen clipboard to figure out how many nozzles our engine should have. If we find it we bag all the other engines.
We compare the engines that are left and eliminate the ones that are not compareable any further (e.g.: if we find 2 green engines with 3 nozzels each an a preasure that is ok we throw them away).
The last one is the working one.
If we do not find either of the clipboards we work with what we got. In the worst senarios we saw we were left with 7 engines before we started eliminating doubles and still had 5 to choose from in the end. Getting the intel might now give the right hint but well ... choose :P

The allmighty god of random:
If you do this more often you will notice that some times you can not find one or even both clipboards. Also the computers will have other numbers and the boards have other tables. Sometimes breaking down to a lot of engines beeing left to choose from. In that case just be happy that the game provides you with so many random features, keeping the missions interesting :P

For us this was the working engine. Kepp in mind the factors are randomised.
--> it uses Deuterium (small blue gastank)
--> it has 3 nozzels connecting with the hydrogentank (lower left corner)
--> it has a preasure below 400 bar

hehe
this guide was started after the beta to solve the "riddle" first - kind of necroed it ^^
most off the stuff in here has nothing to do with it, though ^^

but the wiki originaly copied out the important parts for the solution (including my many many type-os ^^)

i always found the other achivo here whee you get the right one last is one of teh hardest to do
Un-Fortunate Son 25 NOV 2017 a las 22:25
ok, I read this cand couldn't make heads or tales of it. Plus, I missed both the intel and broke every computer besides one. I blindly guessed on which was right. Looked back at this and said, "Man, if that guess was right then I'm lucky as heck." Ten seconds later, Doctor Fantastic achievement. Good guide, but blind guessing and luck worked for me. 10/10 would steal cold fusion machines agian

Won. I found this http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=245702671 and ran to every singel one of them. It was the last one... the very last one.

Nah, actually i think: Maybe its just not there so they have to guess the color from teh preasure data and teh nozzle count, as well as counting out doubles. Happens quiet often. Hang in there.
TSense 16 MAR 2015 a las 10:32
The note on the color does not spawn. I checked the whole house. I know what you think now, "Well he overlookt it." No, iam running that house for 20min now because i have to do it on first try. I checked every table 5 times by now. And iam still in that Heist this very moment.

Yeah, forget about the day 1 stuff. This started out with the end of the beta and was a collect-hints-then-solve-it-together thing.

You will always find the info on the preasure and maybe there are 1-3 notebooks around. However: if they are not, the engines will be build in a way so that you can sort them out. e.g. 2 engines with teh same color/gas will have the same preasure and number of nozzles.
I believe the payday 2 wiki(a) has a guide showing teh numbers of teh engines compared to teh found events and its 80ish % acurate.

Never see this heist fail after 2 month in after gamestart, so many ppl just know how it works. Kind of sad that no more "clever things" like this are in the game :/
TSense 16 MAR 2015 a las 10:00
well, just lost this heist. I got the note about the nozzels, 3. I got rid of all 1 and 2's. I checked all Note-Locations. Your map misses most of them were i found the notes most of the time (i play this heist more then other people) and all of your Locations were empty. So i just trow all 3-nozzels in... all fake. Overkill hates this heist, the note you can get on day 1 is even false - it allways says Deuterium, even if it isn't.

this guide might be a little outdated xD
just search for teh 1-3 clues on day 2 adn you will manage :)
