Heat 101 (WIP)
By Pirate Queen and 1 collaborators
This is game-play basics. An example of some (not all) of the topics I will cover:
- What do ore nodes look like?
- What workbenches are needed for core resources?
- What food is the most profitable to farm?
- What animals are the most profitable to raise?
- How do I... ? Basics answered.

This is a work in progress, I am still learning the game too!

FAQs
How do I drink water?
There are two methods: Drinking from a water skin/jug/flask, or stepping into a water source deep enough. To see if your character is gaining hydration hit "P" and watch your hydration stat number go up.
Protip: There appears to be about a 5 second delay when drinking from a potable water source on hydration, Two sips will usually fill you up from empty.

How do I get a water skin?
You can craft a water skin by pressing the i key for Inventory or at a crafting table, but you need to unlock it first. To unlock go to blueprints the b key, you will see it under the tools tab you will need 4 hide and 1 sinew. You get hide & sinew when you kill and harvest an animal. To harvest an animal you will need an axe or a skinning knife.

Why do I keep getting poisoned when I drink from a water skin?
Water quality matters in the water skins. To avoid a debuff when drinking from a potable water supply (water skin, ceramic jug, flask, etc.) you need to use "purified water". There are two ways to get purified water:
  • Boil it at a heat source, like a campfire, fireplace or stove.
  • Get it from a well.
Protip: You can boil water in a almost any portable container, and store purified water in a barrel/bucket, if a well isn't possible yet. Buckets hold 60 units of water, small water skins hold 3, medium hold 5.

My Character is hungry where can I find food?
  • If you have a shipping bin (once you claim a plot of land, you should place one), you can purchase food.
  • You can grow food, if you have seeds (you get "mixed seed" by hitting the grass for fiber or hay, or purchase some at the shipping catalog), but these will take in-game days to produce. Turnips grow the fastest, but don't offer much nutrition points, Potatoes once baked in a campfire/stove offer the best nutrition points (2 baked potaoes fill you up), but they take 5-7(?) days to grow (need to confirm).
  • You can forage for Saskatoon berries, and mushrooms (the red mushrooms are poisonous). Mushrooms are found in the forest clearings, and randomly along the forest. Saskatoon berries are bushes found across the map.
  • Hunt! You can kill any livestock and wildlife you see, including predators. They all provide you with meat, giblets, fat, bone, sinew, hide, and a single pelt. You can cook the meat & giblets. The meat is what you will want to eat. Bigger the animal, the harder to kill it, and the more meat it provides. A small animal provides up to a stack of meat (5), medium sized animals provide up to 3 stacks (15), and large animals provide five stacks or more (25). But be warned! They may fight back!
Protip: There appears to be about a 5 second delay when eating food, eat and wait to see where your levels are at.
Protip: Potatoes are the best raw food in terms of how long it takes to rot (shelf-life). Raw potatoes have a shelf-life of 2-3 days, and baked potatoes have a shelf life of 4 hours. You can bake a potato in any heat source. Baked potatoes give about 65 nutrition.
Protip: Pelts are worth a good amount of money. You can use these to make money early on in game.
Protip: You can buy (cheap) or make cornbread, which is also has a long shelf-life. It takes 2 days to rot and provides about 60 nutrition.

I put points into my hydration and/or nutrition stats, but the cap went down?! What is this sorcery?!
Putting points into your hunger or nutrition lowers the amount of nutrition points it takes to fill you up. 100 nutrition/hydration takes 100 nutrition or hydration points to fill your needs.

Can I move a tent along with me?
Yes, hold the e key, for interaction, down to interact and "pick up" your tent.

How to I set a respawn point?
You can place a mattress or bed down, and when re-spawning it gives you access to that as a re-spawn point option.

How do I tame an animal?
You need darts (you can craft or purchase these), a blowgun & at least 3-4 of the animal's preferred food (a stack or two is better). You shoot the animal with a dart (1-5 depending on animal size), and it will "stun" them, so you can tame it. Then you press the e key to open its inventory and place the food items inside the animals inventory. You can use the "use item" which force-feeds that item to the animal to speed up the process a little, but taming takes time regardless. Just wait, you will see the blue "stun" progress bar go down, (if it goes below 30% stun the animal again) as you see the green "tame" bar go up.

How do I farm?
Farming is a useful means of producing food, fodder, and making money through recipes (and selling your food), or selling the raw product.
  • Pick a plot of land, and left click to till the soil. Right click will smooth the land out so you can't plant. Tilled plots look like a dark dirt squarish patch.
  • Add the seeds to your tilled rows. A seeded plot will have two lines of planted "rows" per square, only one plant will grow.
  • Water the seeded plot until the square is green. It will slowly fade from black/grey to a green color.
  • Wait until it grows. The seed bags will tell you the grow rate. The growing seed is the turnip seeds. When plants are ready and you walk up to them you should see the interact key (e) Harvest option.
Protip: Tomato, Saskatoon, Strawberry, Corn & Bean seeds continue to produce, after the first harvest.
Protip: You only have to water once, when you plant the seeds, but watering the plants regularly yields better results in both quantity, quality and how quickly they produce. Later in the game you have the ability to make sprinklers. Watering cans are an option, and upgraded cans have a higher capacity and range.
Protip: Dry soil has a light brown color, and the ground looks dry and cracked.
Protip: Compost bin can be used to turn rot, defecation & gunk into soil additives for farming.
Protip: Upgrade your hoe & watering can as soon as possible; they will make your farming life easier.

Where do I make ingots?
You need to upgrade the kiln 2x, until it is a smelter. Once the kiln is upgraded to a smelter, it will allow you to smelt ore into ingots. 15 ore makes 1 ingot.

Where do I make steel?
This is a combination of steps. You make the "recipe" at the laboratory. Once the recipe is created, you craft the item at the smelter. You will need to unlock the recipe for steel, it it under the "medical" tab.

Where do I make food recipes?
Once you've unlocked a food recipe from the blueprints - (b) select the food tab (fork & knife icon), you need a prep table to craft the recipe. The recipe is the raw ingredients, and you cook the crafted recipe in a heat source (campfire, fireplace, smoker, oven, etc).
Ore Nodes
One of the biggest questions I had was what ore nodes looked like. I didn't even know how to identify a node when I found one. I collected screenshots for the nodes just for you all.

The spawn locations are random per world generation. Nodes tend to have higher chances to spawn along certain terrain types, but can randomly spawn anywhere. You can see sulfur or saltpeter on iron and stone nodes as well.

15 ore weighs almost twice as much as a single ingot. If you set up a mining operation far from your base you may want to build yourself a small cabin with smelters & a fireplace.

If your character is overburdened with too much weight, it slows their movement down, and causes them to pant like they ran a marathon. The weight may eventually stop movement, however I haven't tested this out yet.

You can use a pickaxe to get ore (listed in order of durability & damage):
(lowest) Stone > Bone > Copper > Iron > Steel (highest)

You repair tools at the workbench for about 1/3 the material cost to build one.

Dirt Node
Looks like a pile of ash.
Wooded terrain.
Sand Node
Looks like a pile of sand.
Dry terrain.
Clay Node
Large lumpy orange/yellow stone, can look like layers of sediment.
Along water sources.
Lead Node
Tall smooth square stone.
Along water sources & Treelines.
Copper Node
Can be found in meadows, within the woods
& hilltops at higher rates, but found anywhere.
Oil Shale Node
Flat dark jagged rock, with a shine.
Desert/Canyon & Mountains
Iron
Large dark red smooth rock.
Desert/Canyon & Mountains
Sulfur Node
Lumpy yellow rock.
Desert/Canyons & Mountains.
Saltpeter Node
Desert/Canyon & Mountains, looks like dried coral.
Gemstone Node
Vibrant tall rock, typically blue/violet and shimmery.
Desert/Canyon & Mountains
(Provides a single random gemstone
when depleted)
Nugget Node
Large lumpy pale yellow rock.
Desert/Canyon & Mountains
(Provides a single random nugget
when depleted)
Combination Node
Appearance differs.
Can be found anywhere.
Sulfur & Saltpeter often appear with
another node, like iron or stone.
This is iron & sulfur.
Nutrition & Hydration
There are several types of crops, animal products, & forage items in the game. Many of which are available for purchase as well as can be grown/produced (in the right season of course). This is not a comprehensive list, just the items which I have found, so far. You can boil water in any container in a heat source (bottom) to purify it. A well provides easier access to higher quantities of purified water, but in a pinch you can boil water in a water skin to purify it for drinking at a campfire.

Raw Foodstuffs

Fruits
  • Saskatoon Berries: These are like blueberries. Plant continues to produce.
  • Strawberries: They rot fast, but can be turned into pastries & cookies. Plant continues to produce.
  • Apples: They rot in a day or so, and later in the game can be turned into pastries.

Vegetables
  • Corn: This is a cheap item to buy and you can turn it into corn bread by level 10. Corn bread doesn't rot quickly and provides good nutrition points. Plant continues to produce.
  • Beans: Raw beans decay in 12h and baked beans decay after 1d. Baked beans provide nearly a full bar of nutrition and some thirst. Plant continues to produce.
  • Turnips: Quick growing, but not much for nutrition, good to learn how to farm, or for food in the winter.
  • Carrots: Good nutrition, has a long shelf-life, and horses like them.
  • Tomatoes: Good nutrition, but rots quickly. Plant continues to produce.

Starches
  • Grain: Lasts ages, can be processed into flour, used for animal feed, or made into prepared food.
  • Potatoes: Long shelf life, and a cooked potato gives you about 65 nutrition. Cooked potatoes only last 4 hours.

Animal Products
  • Meat: Can be acquired by hunting any animal which is not a bird. Cooked meat provides about 50 nutrition. Smoked meat lasts longer.
  • Poultry: Can be acquired by hunting chickens or ducks. Cooked poultry provides about 40 nutrition.
  • Milk: Collected from a tamed/purchased cow or goat, but can also be purchased from the shipping bin.
  • Eggs: Collected from a tamed/purchased hen or duck, but can also be purchased from the shipping bin.
  • Honey: Currently no confirmed way to acquire honey, but can be purchased from the shipping bin.

Recipes:
Recipes are crafted on the prep table, you get the "ingredients" which shows like a paper wrapping the item, and they must be cooked in a heat source. Recipes are most profitable if you produce everything yourself. You will need to unlock the recipe and then you can craft the item as long as you have the necessary ingredients.

Heat sources
You can cook food in a variety of heat sources, some you cannot cook in. I will only include those you can cook in.
  • Campfire: Can be upgraded 3 times, can cook potatoes, meat, poultry, bannok & cornbread. Produces charcoal.
  • Fireplace: Can be upgraded 3 times, can cook potatoes, meat, poultry, bannok & cornbread. Produces charcoal.
  • Smoker: Can smoke meat & poultry. Smoked meat rots in 1 day.
  • Iron Stove: Can be upgraded 3 times, can cook potatoes, meat, poultry & recipes. Produces charcoal.
Blueprints Basics
Blueprints are crafting recipes. You need to unlock the blueprint of the item you want to craft. Blueprints require more materials to unlock than is required to craft.

To open your blueprints panel press the b key.

Blueprints are unlocked like a production chain, you need to have all of the previous blueprints unlocked in order to unlock a later blueprint. The only exception to this is when an item is split off the main hierarchy tree with no children.

Blueprints have level requirements, you need to be a level x to unlock as well as the materials, and in some cases cash.

In order to unlock a blueprint you need to have the necessary items in your inventory. Some items weigh a lot, and may overload your weight limits. If that happens you will hear your character pant like they're out of breath from running or carrying something heavy.
Building
Once you've gathered some sticks, wood, and cotton, you'll be able to make a clipboard and a hammer. These are all you need to start creating your dream home, or war base, or whatever you can imagine. With all the different structure options available there's a huge chance for your creativity to show.

If you're in multiplayer, now you'll want to prevent the base from decaying over time, this is done by making a flag post and putting it in the same grid as your newly made house. Then put money in it to pay for upkeep. You'll notice taxes in here too, that will be explained in the Positions of Interest section later on.

If you're in single player, on homestead you do not have property taxes, but the sales taxes are set and cannot be changed.

"Ok, I've laid the foundation and walls but now what? It's just a bunch of weak looking sticks!"

Protip: Once you have placed the flag, a sleeping bag for spawn point would be a good idea.

Depending on the building tier you will need the appropriate resources to build your home. The initial phase you simply placed the framing of what you're building. You will need to next add materials to finish the build. Place the needed materials in your inventory and select the hammer as your active tool. Hold the interact key (e) down and select "build" mode. Now simple left click on the build frame to apply the materials.

From there look through the available items/furniture/doors everything in the blueprints section to plan out the rest of your house.

Using a hammer and the "E" menu will allow you to upgrade and repair existing, and right clicking will destroy the highlighted section.

While using clipboard, you can press E to "Unsnap" so the structures don't automatically place themselves. This can be useful for those "hard to reach areas"

Protip: When placing stock piles if you hold "alt" it will snap the stockpiles together.
Animals (WIP)
As of Alpha 8, breeding is not yet implemented.

Animal Taming
Animals can be tamed. Tamed animals can be ridden & will guard & protect your home. Predators & Bison are better for guarding & protecting, but all animals will protect.

To tame an animal you will need a blowgun & about 10 darts (more if your aim isn't good). It takes 2-3 darts to knock out most animals. This will stun the animal.

You will also need the animal's preferred food (a stack of 10-20 should be more than enough). You can find out their preferred food by hovering over the foodstuffs in the shipping bin. Example, horses like carrots and apples. You can put any foodstuffs the animal will eat in their inventory (I have tamed a horse with just hay), but it will take longer.

You shoot the animal with darts (be careful they will attack back), until the animal is laying on the ground unconscious. Then you access the animal's inventory by holding "E" and going to "Loot", put the food in the inventory.

Protips:
  • You can force-feed the animals by clicking the "use" button to speed up the process a little, but you will use more food than if you just let the animal go through the food itself.
  • If you're taming something that takes a long time bring some tools so you can gather resources while you keep an eye on the animal. You can use their inventory to carry extra weight.

Animal Commands
You can assign commands to tamed animals and they will follow them until issued another command. The command wheel is accessed by walking up to an animal and holding "E".
  • Follow: Animal will follow you.
  • Stop: Basically like stay, will also stop all previous commands.
  • Wander: Let the animal wander about the map.
  • Guard: Guards your base.
  • Protect: Protects you.
Let me know if I missed any, I'm not in the game right now to check.

Feeding & Watering your animals
If you remove an animal from your party, it will not need to consume food/water. This is the recommended action for animals you're not interacting with, and are not producing any products for you.

Note: The auto watering function appears pretty buggy, you will probably have to manually water and possibly feed your animals.

Watering
You can keep your animal hydrated two ways:
  1. You can bring them chest deep into a water source. This functions like it does for the player.
  2. You can place a bucket of water into their inventory.
If you place a bucket in the inventory, it does last a long while. You should make sure it contains purified water though, or your animal may get the "dazed" debuff.

Feeding
Most animals can be fed by putting the food in the animals inventory. Some animals accept different types of food than others. If you place the animal's preferred food (look at the shipping bin's tool tips "interested animals"), they will auto-feed themselves the best. Non-preferred foods are a little buggy.
  • Most passive animals will eat grain or hay as a default food source, but have a preferred food which is not hay/grain. Sheep & chicken are the only passive animals I know of who's preferred food is hay/grain.
  • Most aggressive animals prefer meat. You now have a use for all those giblets! Your carnivores love them.

Animal List
I will start taking pictures of the animals, when possible, but I will list them out here and where they are found.

Note: All animals will aggro in self-defense, taming/hunting even a passive an animal means it will attack you.

NPC Families
In this game your able to make a family or party of NPCs who can help protect you and gather recourses

It all starts with a baby, first you have to get one, there's a few ways.
In the newspaper there's an adoption option, this will tell you to go to the shipping bin to adopt a baby.
In the shipping bin you can purchase a baby basket, this will spawn a baby when you place it.
Another way is to steal someone elses baby, if you interact with an abandoned NPC it will allow you to take it.
And finally, the good old fashioned make love option with other players and grown NPCs. This will make a ragdoll function and allow you to control movements, really quite funny actually
You'll notice a bar of hearts filling up, when it's full you'll have a chance to conceive, the more kids you make the less chance of gaining another.

Once you have the baby, now you have to take care of it.
Keeping it fed and active, if you walk away too far it will become abandoned so it's best to keep it mounted.
There's a few clothing options to help keep the baby warm and clean. Just equip them like you would a player in the NPC inventory
It'll be able to "stop" "follow" or "wander" if given the command

It grew up!
Usually after about 45min being active it will become a toddler.
Feeding can still be done by the breastfeeding command, and just bring it in to a clean stream to drink, pretty much still the same as a baby, but different clothes and a bit larger

They grow so fast!
After roughly an hour at toddler stage then it will become a child. This will open up the option for different clothes and foods since you'll no longer be able to breastfeed...'cuz that would be weird
You can put food in their inventory and usually they'll feed themselves, or you can force feed with the action button. Same idea as tamed animals

After this stage they become Adults.
Now they are able to fight, attack, defend, go hunting, and possibly even farm since they will have a new slot for tools and a slot for weapons.
I've tried axes and pickaxes but so far there doesn't seem to be a way to get them to actually farm, but they do fight very well.
You can dress them in any clothes you can use on yourself, and any items as well, even smokes.
EXP and Leveling
As you play, you gain exp for levels, each level gives you a stat point to spend on the different attributes mentioned in FAQ.
Gaining experience currently is passive, and there are ways of increasing how much is gained.
By doing different activities, running, farming, research, the exp/sec seems to increase, and there's an elixer that will give you a 10% boost for 5min aswell.

Gun Tech: It's intuitive enough. You can equip ANY melee weapon and skin the animal, it doesn't have to be a knife. Anyone that can't figure out you need to hit the thing you want stuff from (nearly half of the mechanics in the game) wouldn't be able to feed themselves in real life.
Gun Tech. Dec 30, 2019 @ 12:31pm
You name hunt, but you don't explain hw to get the meat and skin from it. I think that's necessary since the mechanism is highly unintuitive. IRL you equip a knife and skin it. Snip snip.
