Where to find and how to get the Dragon Claws.

Introduction

In several Nordic ruins you will encounter circular Nordic puzzle doors, which can only be opened by using a Dragon Claw. The back side of these claws contains the solution to opening the puzzle doors. From top to bottom the claws reveal the position of the outer, middle and inner ring of the puzzle door respectively, that is for the puzzle door the dragon claw should be used.

All dragon claws are quest items, some for as long as a related quest is not completed, others may be used in more than one quest.

Amathyst Dragon Claw

Coral Dragon Claw

Related Quest: Yngol's Barrow
Location: Birna at Birna's Oddments, Winterhold and/or Yngol's Barrow (on a pedestal)
Combination: Snake - Wolf - Moth

Notes: The claw can be bought from Birna at Birna's Oddments in Winterhold, even if you already picked up the claw inside Yngol's Barrow, but if you are offered the claw from Birna, the claw in Yngol's Barrow will disappear.

Diamond Dragon Claw

Notes: To complete the quest you will need to retrieve the three parts of the Gauldurson Amulet from Saarthal, Geirmund's Hall and Folgunthur. Be sure to read each writ of sealing, the Ancient Edict in Reachwater Rock and Daynas Valen's Notes in Folgunthur. Daynas Valen's Journal can be found outside Folgunthur, but should be read after reading Lost Legends.

Glass Dragon Claw

Notes: It is possible to ignore Valmir by ending the conversation before accepting the quest, and pickpocket the key to Forelhost from him. It is also possible to kill him and loot his body for the key and the piece of paper that reveals his treachery.

Golden Dragon Claw

Notes: To complete this quest, return the claw to its rightful owner, Lucan Valerius at the Riverwood Trader, after retrieving it from Arvel the Swift who is captured by a frostbyte spider inside the barrow. Be sure to complete the quest related to Bleak Falls Barrow in retrieving the Dragonstone, otherwise you will not be able to return the claw to Lucan.

Iron Dragon Claw

Notes: Beware when lifting the claw from the pedestal, as for flamethrowers statues will immediately start throwing flames.

Sapphire Dragon Claw

Notes: Either talk to Wilhelm first or enter Shroud Hearth Barrow. You may have to kill Wyndelius Gatharian, posing as a spirit, inside the barrow, pick up his journal and take the journal to Wilhelm. Killing Wyndelius is not necessary to complete the quest if you are able to retrieve the journal without him noticing it.
