Where to find the skill books and trainers to help increase your skills

Introduction

When reading a Skill Book your level in the associated skill will be permanently increased by 1 point. It is not necessary to read the entire book. Opening and closing the book is sufficient. There are 5 different books for each of the 18 skills, therefore 90 in total. Reading the same skill book more than once will have no additional effect.

Also included are trainers who you may ask to train you in a specific skill: Common, Expert or Master. This, however will cost you a certain amount of septims per skill point, up to a maximum of 5 skill points.

Skill books are available in various locations or as quest rewards, but never in random loot, and these books can never be bought from merchants, but can be sold to merchants (at lower speech levels to spell and general goods merchants). Skill books can easily be distinguished from most other books by looking at their value which is usually around 50 septims or more.

Additional locations added by Creation Club mods are omitted. In some locations the skill books are marked as owned and taking the books is considered stealing. These locations are marked with {*}.

Completing quests may increase more than one skill, e.g. quests given by members of the Bards College in Solitude.

Upon completing the quest 'Discerning the Transmundane' you will be rewarded the Oghma Infinium. Reading this book, you have a choice selecting 'The Path of Magic', 'The Path of Might' or 'The Path of Shadow'. Depending on your choice you will be rewarded 5 XP for each magic skill, each combat skill or each stealth skill respectively.
