Very Hard Iron Mutant complete walkthrough
By Panjandrm
A complete Very Hard Iron Mutant run from the perspective of the current WR holder for Mutant year zero Speedrunning.
This run isn't about 100% but rather about beating the game as fast as possible while also mitigating as much RNG that might pose a threat to the run.

Welcome to my guide about how to beat Mutant Year Zero on Very Hard Iron Mutant as safely as possible, my name is Panjandrm and I am the current WR Speedrun holder for this game, I have completed too many runs of this game on each difficulty and found some major skips for areas that makes this run a lot safer.

This is not a 100% run, in fact this run moves along the same route as the speedrun so I won't mention a lot of things that I don't do normally but you can, however there are a few rules I for this run that I will list now.

  • Unless the fight is 100% something you can win while in stealth, don't take it.
    * One Mistake can turn an easy fight into a funeral early.
  • Do not fight tanks outside of the last fight.
    * Just don't, these guys suck.
  • Every time you shoot, or move into range of an enemy check everything first
    * I lose too many runs to accidentally having the wrong weapon equipped
  • Every time you move in combat double check where your cursor and take your time.
    * Once again it's really easy to accidentally move into the wrong place on this game, even double
    moving.
  • Directions in the guide are given assuming you haven't moved the camera's position.
    * Not really a rule, just keep this in mind.

This guide includes a written route and instructions, as well as a video for each zone and how to progress through them.

Stealth kill VS Fight instructions

Stealth kills will be mentioned briefly as I'm assuming you know how to pull off a stealth kill without indepth detail unless they're the start or leading up to a big fight.

Fights will be indicated with the following block of text.

We're here, this is the start of your grand adventure to avoid as much fighting as possible and skip parts of the game by being a coward!

From where you start just run up towards the first fight of the game, feel free to pick up the scrap along the way.

The first fight is almost too easy, with both enemeis going down in a single shot, just move Bormin and Dux in close enough to have 75% shots and execute them.

⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Fight Over               ⦁ ⦁ ⦁

Loot both the enemies, the Broiler 50 comes in useful (mostly just for the +1 Crit Damage) and continue alone your way up until you come to the next group of enemies, skirt around them next to the water and make your way past them.

Next to the wall on the left if you turn off your torch you can safely pick up some broken weapon parts before moving on to the next zone.
East Outpost
Proceed up in a straight line, leaving the path and going between the two trees, eventually as you make your way up you'll find a tree slightly to the right with an old man leaning against it, this kind fellow has left some weapon parts for us! Pick them up and then follow the wall to the right to the next area, feel free to collect the extra Med Kit and Scraps at the campsite you pass.

                    Enemies:
                    Butcher - 4HP

  ╱ ╲

Turn off your light and make your way past the fence, making sure not to alert the enemies yet.
Head around the boat and car until you reach the chest and loot it, picking up the Gaper and equipping it to Bormin. You should also unequip the pistol from Bormin and Dux and Give Dux Bormin's Scattergun as his secondary.

Once that is all done stealth kill the Butcher with Dux, as long as you don't walk somewhere weird or alert him by walking into his zone it's a very easy and safe kill.

Split up the duo and place Dux to the south east (Near the slider) of the Marauder, ready to ambush him try to put him inbetween the slide and the table. Place Bormin between the first car you passed and the building as close to the visual ring of the Hunter as you dare.

It's time to Ambush the enemy, start off with Bormin and get as close to the Hunter as you can before blasting his guts across the floor with the Gaper.
Switching to Dux take cover behind the table near the Marauder and snipe him for an easy kill.

⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Fight Over               ⦁ ⦁ ⦁

Now that the fight is over loot the enemies, the grenade is the only important thing there, head back between the car and the building and pick up the two weapon part piles between them and head west past the trees towards a puddle with more parts.

At this point you should have 25 weapon parts and can head south west to the next zone!
Ark Outskirts
Head north and leave Bormin at the red car while taking Dux around the enemy vision Radius ignore looting the build for the time being as it throws off the timing of the string of stealth kills you're about to execute.

Once you pass the next red car you should see an enemy straight ahead of you, as Dux execute him (Making sure you don't initate the fight until he passes the tree) and then move on to the Marauder to the South West and end his life too.

Switch back to Bormin and regroup so Dux returns back to the start before the next fight.

  ╱ ╲

Move Bormin and Dux up towards the enemy without alerting them and then ambush them, this is an easy one turn fight where you will bring Bormin as close to the Hunter as you can get without double moving and ending his life with the Gaper.
Then replicate that with Dux and the Butcher.

The zone is now clear so feel free to loot the entire zone and head up to the Ark, however short of the weapon parts you got for killing the enemies here I do not feel like there is any point in looting the rest of the zone.
The Ark
Congratulations you made it to the Ark.

While here you have a few tasks to do before moving on to the next zone.
  • Dismantle Everything besides the Crossbow and the Gaper and upgrade the Crossbow to level II
  • Equip the crossbow with the Broiler 50 and the Sight.
  • Buy Deal Maker from Pripp (Honestly not too important)
  • Buy a grenade from Iridia
  • Unequip all your grenades for the time being

Once you have completed these head on over to Hammon's Cabin.
Hammon's Cabin
Head North until you go down the stairs after which you head to the right, towards the titular cabin for the first fight of the zone.

                    Hunter - 10HP

This is the first of very few parts of the run where we take damage on purpose and cannot avoid it.

To begin wait near the two rocks until the Marauder walked past the corner of the building and stealth kill him with Dux, despite being inside the Hunter's ring he doesn't get alerted.

Walk Dux and Bormin as close to the Shaman as you can (near the pile of rocks left of the building) before ambushing him.
Move Bormin to the east side of the log, so he is facing the Shaman without cover and move Dux next to the left of the east side of the log. Use the duo to unload upon the Shaman killing him in the first turn.

During the Hunter's turn he will always (as far as I have found) take cover next to the doorway and will shoot Bormin, this is one of very few instances of damage you're likely to take so don't worry about it.

Move Bormin two tiles into the building and use his Gaper to send the Hunter flying straight through the wall, switch to Dux reload and end his miserable excuse for a life.

The dogs wander pretty far so assess your fight, position and if you can see both how far away they are as you come to it.
However generally the dogs are both within one move of each other, meaning if you are sure you can kill one on the first turn then the second will walk right up to you for the next turn so you have high chance shots on it.

Notes: Occasionally they can be split up so much that you can stealth kill them, when you fire with Bormin watch to see if the game alerts you to an enemy hearing the shot, If not then just deal with this as two separate stealth kills.

Head further west until you find a truck and a skeleton in a chair, loot the skeleton for the hand grenade and then enter the ruins to the north where you can find two sets of weapon parts.

Now you're following the wall to the east until you come to the next zone!

The High Road
Now we're going to pick up a third character and a second silent weapon, so to start head north west, there will be a bridge and a huge rock with some weapon parts next to it, collect them and head south west until you find the Selma ancient pistol.

With your new found ability to kill stronger things silently follow the road North until it comes to the split and head right until you cross the bridge, collecting the weapon parts on the other side of the first tree on the right.

Head on over to the next zone.
The Fallen Angel
Upon entering the zone go to your map and head straight to the Ark, we come here to upgrade the Ancient pistol to level II and equip the Noatun - Emp 30 attachment to it and equip each character with a Hand grenade (one each).
Now head back to The Fallen Angel.

Once loaded into the zone head towards the large rock to the north, walk behind it and keep going until you find a patrolling Butcher, murder him quietly before moving further north where you will find a group of cannon fodder and our second instance of expected damage in the form of Chief Husse.

If you do this fast enough a level 5 10 HP hunter will be caught with them, if not then follow and stealth kill him before starting the fight.

On paper this looks like a daunting fight that is likely your resting place, however in reality this group is so close that the three grenades we collected so far will make short work of them.

Set up your party in a manner similar to this.

From this position use each of them to throw a grenade into the group the result will be a pile of corpses and a hurt Chief Husse who on seeing his friends dying infront of him will (Likely) run towards Bormin and fire at Selma or Dux.

The Medbot will run in to revive the Marauder, however with the Gaper Bormin can stop him from ever getting the chance too, as he revives the fallen bandit just bop him off with the weapon and he will continue to walk back and continue the attempt.
Use this moment to have Dux and Selma kill off the weak Husse.

⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Fight Over               ⦁ ⦁ ⦁

Now that the fight is over go stealth kill the last remaining guy and loot the zone and head back to the Ark

Important loot:
Mimir Needle gun near Husse.
Two weapon part piles where the Bot started
Artifact right of the downed plane.
The High Road - Part 2
Return to the fork in the road and turn left and climb up the two ladders.
Once at the top move past the van on the left to trigger some voice lines and move back, by the time the shaman finishes with this conversation she should move to the center of the road and allow you to turn off your flash light and sneak past her sticking to the railing on the left.
Be quick though as she will walk back eventually.

Pick up the weapon parts in front of the tunnel and leave.
Ark 2
To do list:

Unequip the Gaper, equip the Mimir to Bormin and upgrade it to level 2.

Head to The high road again.
Cave of Fear
Once again another zone we will do almost nothing in, sprint straight ahead, avoiding the first group you meet and stealth killing the next guy you see.
Head to the furthest barricade on the right for some easy weapon parts and stealth kill the guy in front of the exit.

Head to the next zone.
The Sea Titans
Head down the stairs on the left of the starting point and keep to the wall on the right until you enter the zone, we'll be back here shortly.
The Rot Warren
Proceed along the past until you find the next zone, enter it and come back.

Head into the bunker, following the tunnel until you come to the right turn, at this point you have three options; Left, straight and right. Head right and move through the room before following the wall left and turning off your torch, sneak past the Butcher and move to the right where you will find two piles of weapon parts.

Pick them up and fast travel to the Lair of the Horned Devil.
Lair of the Horned Devil
Cross the bridge and head left until you come across a chest next to a group of bandits, if you move fast enough you can just grab the gun and go, if not you may have to stealth kill the one that walks away.

From here head across the bridge to the north east and stick to the right wall, taking your time to sneak past all the enemies towards the back of the barn.

This is a dangerous situation so take your time and stay slow.

There is a patrolling hunter near the fire, if he is currently blocking your way just wait him out.

Climb the ladder, drop into the barn and loot the chest, equipping it to Dux or Selma before heading back to The Sea Titans.
The Sea Titan - Part 2
From the entrance leading to The Rot Warren you can just hug the right wall until you climb up some steps and see a building, head to the left of it and drop off the ledge.

The rings of the enemies in front of the ship don't quite cover the bridge so you can squeeze past, or wait for the boss to walk away from it allowing you to walk past safely.

On the boat you should stealth kill both enemies when they are apart and collect the Power Brick from the yellow car before climbing to the top and heading over to the House of Bones.
House of Bones
Time for mutations, unlock the following.

Dux: Skull Splitter + Moth Wings
Bormin: Hog Rush + Run 'N' Gun
Selma: Super Tendons + Tree hugger + Run 'N' Gun

Remember not to use any abilities unless I specifically mention it, as the cooldown requires us to kill enemies in specific orders.

Head up until you go through the fence, head left and stick to the far left wall until you pass the two bandits talking about stoodents. Make a move towards the ambulans and you'll find a Med-Bot, ambush him and start the fight with a Hog Rush, normal shots should be enough to finish this fight silently.

Head around until Skoog starts talking and move back to where you killed the Med-bot, from here when Skoog walks over to the Sect Hunter (on the right) you can kill the pyro, be sure to start Dux close and use your Moth Wings and Skull Splitter for the 7 crit damage.

If you get too close you'll take fire damage from the Pyro death.

Head past the Sect Hunter and you should find a bandit on the right, stealth kill him and then head north where you will find a Marauder and Butcher that are easily taken out from stealth, at this point your abilities should be refreshed so head back to the Sect Hunter and wait for Skoog to walk away from him.

Stealth kill the Hunter, using Moth Wings and Skull Splitter for the crit damage and then pick up Twitch Shot for Bormin and equip it, and Circuit Breaker for Dux but do not equip it yet.

Start a fight with Skoog using Hog Rush, he will be downed long enough for your team to kill him with normal shots but feel free to use Twitch shot for safety as we're going to refresh all our abilities anyway.

Head to the west of the hospital and stealth kill the bandits that were talking about stoodents, your abilities should be back up now so head to Izza and Falla in the north west corner of the zone.
Izza and Fala
We're only in Izza and Falla for a moment, however getting in a fight here can really roll out of control due to the tank and the bots, so carefully head east until you come across the Pizza and Falaffel building, follow it's wall around to the left and sneak up to the Ice box and take it before returning to the Ark.
Ark 3
Todo list:
  • Skip socializing
  • Upgrade Mimir pistol
  • Buy PyroMania, Technophobe and Zapper from Pripp.

Head to Iron Serpent
The Iron Serpent
Head north, eventually picking up the three weapon part piles around the pools of blood, avoid fighting the first zone dog and head further north until you find the big doggo.

Hog Rush this pupper (Beware she doesn't fall right away, so don't have a heart attack) and then lay into her with normal attacks before moving to the next zone.
The Metal Fields
Walk in a straight line until you get Farrow Worst girl and then take the armor from the box on the left, equipping it on Selma.
Wait for the bot to walk away before sticking to the southern 'wall' and heading left make sure you picked up the key on the corpse along the way, with your torch off you can sneak past the bot guarding the next zone and head on out without any fighting.
Cultlands & Grogg Den
Another quick run zone, head through the 'gate' into the main area and stick to the right wall until you find the entrance to the Grogg den, enter it.

At the Grogg Den follow the path until you see the Fishmas IPA barn ahead of you, wait for the bot to leave it and then walk in and pick up the Grog Milker from the middle kettles, head back to the fence and then go left (Right from where you came in) and climb the ladder, be sure to pick up the weapon parts here and head east until you find a weapon chest and loot the Elysium - LR678.

Now fast travel back to the cult lands and once again stick to the right until you find the next zone.
Spear of Heaven
This is one of the most dangerous zones in the run, and while we are going to 'skip' it the zone only gets most dangerous in the process.

I would suggest making a seperate save in normal to test this before you try it, or download a save file at this point.

Head towards the cathderal, take out the Sect Butcher on the right when the conversation is over and he walks away and then get closer to the building.

Walk Dux inbetween the windows as shown below and ambush right away.

From here use his Moth Wings to fly onto the rooftop and exit combat with F, this will drop Dux onto the roof and you can walk onto this beam, being careful not to fall.

Read carefully so you know what you're doing before you do it.
If you walk towards the wall and aim slightly right and tap forward very lightly you should eventually fall into the building, if you spam E as fast as you can you should enter the next zone before the fight starts.

Good work, you just skipped a HUGE zone and a ton of possible RNG for the run.
The World Ender
This area is safe, loot and move through it however you want, just be sure to loot the Holy book of Fixing and the GJR-666 before heading back to the Ark.
Ark 4
Todo list:

  • Give Farrow the level 1 Rambino and remove her level 2 Boomstick
  • Remove Magnus's Rambino and give him the GJR- 666
  • Buy Ranger from Pripp
  • DIsmantle the free Rambino
  • Take the green scope from the Mimir pistol and put it on the GJR-666
  • Put the Red scope on the Mimir and the fire attachment too
  • Upgrade Dux Crossbow to level 3

Head to the Metal fields
The Metal Fields - Part 2
Head up to the building you found Farrow in, to the right you should see a bot, follow him as he walks until you can get into the train on the left, from here sneak to the back and loot the EMP grenade before coming back to the door you came in, by now the bot should be walking back the way you came, let him pass and sneak further ahead to the mechanical arms.

Head left here weaving through the trains until you get to a building with a bot in it, walk up to the nearby fence and use Moth wings to put Dux on the other side of them before exiting out of combat and using the key we got earlier to open the gate.

Now just head to the next zone.
The Castle of Light
We don't like this bright boy so just run through this safe zone picking up the two weapon part piles along the way, head into the subway and into the next zone.
Grave of the Ancients
We're onto the home stretch here guys luckily for us two of these final three zones are the easiest in the game for this speedrun route we're following so head to the gap in the wall on the right, walk through and go through the cafe on the right before heading further west through the arcade then follow the wall along until you come to the exit, you will need to turn off your torch and sneak past a bot.
The Forbidden City
Note: If you're not high a level enough to have Frog legs on Selma at this point then you can head back to a lower level area like Sea Titans and kill one or two things we skipped.

Aquire and equip Selma's Frog Legs at this point and head west, moving into the big building and up the two ladders.

Place Selma in this position and then use her Frogs Legs to bounce across the bridge without fighting the bots.

From here head to the right side of the cover and head straight towards the next zone, as long as you move quickly you can outrun the bots dropped by big mama bad.

The Sealed Gate
Here we are, all your hard work and effort has culminated to this, one final fight and you've won.
However do not slip up now as you could very easily lose your save in this one last fight.

Head forward while sticking to the left wall and you should be able to enter a ruin, keep walking through it until you can get out and head further left until you find a ladder to climb.
You may have to wait for a bandit to leave.

Put the team in these positions and equip each of them with a Chem flare and give Dux an EMP, ambush and use Selma's flare on the Pyro, skip Dux and Bormin's turns, now shoot with Dux and Selma and Twitch Shot with Bormin to finish off the Pyro quickly.

Skip Bormin and Selma's turns and then initiate the fight with the Med-bot by using Circuit Breaker on it.
A full turn of normal shots should almost kill it and then use Selma and Dux to finish it off Overwatch with Bormin.

The Z600 will walk in and hopefully Bormin will get some free damage off on it, use the EMP you equipped to knock out the Z600 for a few turns and then just lay normal shots into it until it dies.

It's close and a bit scary, but it almost always works, luckily the actual final enemies of the game don't hear the atomic bomb go off behind them.

Now drop down and make sure Dux and Bormin both have a Chem flare again, switch Selma out for Magnus and unlock Telekinesis Shield, Sneak and Puppeteer.

                    Enemies:
                    Sect Tank - 36HP/2A
                    Sect Hunter - 26HP
                    High Priestess Plutonia - 36HP/4A

Start the fight by positioning the team like so, and using Dux and Bormin to throw out chem flares, one below the tank and one at the edge of the wall to the right of Plutonia so it covers her and the hunter.

Now be ready for hell, use Magnus to try and Mind Control the Hunter, if you followed the guide properly and only came into the final zone once this should always work.
Use the Hunter to shoot the tank, then move Dux up close to the Tank and shoot him, and Bormin up close and Twitch Shot him.

DON'T FORGET TO USE YOUR LOUD WEAPONS, WE GOT NO USE FOR STEALTH NOW BOYS!

The tank will likely survive with very little health, will always bash the hunter and Plutonia will possibly zap you and always take cover behind the wall.

Use Bormin to Bash that psychopathic harlot through the wall, have Magnus use the GJR to shoot her and move Dux up to kill the Tank.

The enemy turn nothing happens except the hunter goes back to being an enemy, use Dux and Bormin to kill him and have Magnus reload and shoot Plutonia.

Now hit Plutonia with everything you have and she should die on the this turn, congratulations you can now head on over to Eden.

Sorry for the comments but its also worth noting for those not speed running that save scumming is possible as long as you never finish your first turn, it sets you back once you load to the last won boss fight, that way you can change turn rotation to hit the desired crit or if you screw up you can save scum to the last fight

Just a heads up if you sneak around and kill the medibot using an emp it wont alert everyone and you can dispatch it in two turns with both the ancient pistol and the crossbow
