Fix Constant Firing + Punching in First Person mode

Having trouble with the game constantly taking turbo fire input? Read on!

Intro

Hullo!

So it seems this game has a botched implementation of JoyAxisZ (the value that the Left and Right Triggers manipulate on X-input).

The Solution? We need to use something other than JoyAxisZ! So:

Config File

1. Go to the game's configuration file (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Oddworld\Stranger's Wrath HD\config.txt)

Locate Controls in config

2. Scroll down either to

config="Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)"

or

config="Custom Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)"



(either is fine, just make sure whichever one you alter is selected through the game's launcher)

Change Fire 1+2 inputs

3. Change the values of fire1 and fire 2 to keyboard buttons. As seen below, I just went for two random letters. We have to alter them here as the game launcher won't let you assign non-controller keys. Save the changes.

4. Go to Steam Controller Configuration for Oddworld (right click game's name on list, then select "Edit Steam Controller Configuration", as seen below)



(can also access this via pressing home button mid-game on Big Picture in-game menu)

5. Change the functions of your controller's triggers to the two keyboard buttons you set earlier.

So select the trigger:



(this will work on any controller supported through Steam, so Xbox 360/One + PS4 + Switch + Steam pads are good to go!)

Select the box for 'soft pull':



Then finally select the keyboard button you assigned:



Then do the same for the other trigger! You'll want to assign fire1 to left trigger and fire2 to right trigger.

Just confirming, this fix works with a PS5 controller. Tutorial screenshots may need to be updated as the newer layout on steam is slightly different. Thank you very much Jazzem for this!

This didn't work for me. It's still auto inputting when bound to keyboard keys.

My other issue I had was my character kept getting stuck, so i would hit Jump which sometimes worked, and Esc and back if the AI froze in place.
Obviously this was annoying, but the issue was apparently that I was playing over 120fps.
So when game starts, on the popup menu, click boxes for Vsync, then go Advanced > tick gpu sync too, as well as 120 for fps cap.
That seemed to fix the character & AI freezing and your tweeks stopped the constant firing & punching.
Just wish there was a 4k texture pack now!
If anyone knows how to export the textures lmk and I maybe able to do it
