Getting Started
Before you start reading please note that this guide is FULL of screenshots and easy to follow steps! None of this is meant to be patronising, I am writing this guide under the assumption you know absolutely nothing about the program and need all the help you can get. Feel free to skip certain steps if you know what you're doing or feel it's obvious! Enjoy!

Hello and welcome to this guide! I decided to make it to help others get started creating their own family trees for their Niche tribes, after I did some research into the best programs to use. Today we'll be using the MyHeritage Family Tree Builder, which is a program you need to download but that I find very useful for Niche families.

An alternate program you might prefer to use is the browser-based FamilyEcho (also the program a lot of Youtubers prefer) but I like being able to put images onto a member's display as well as not having to duplicate entries when offspring breeds with a relative... I hope you find this guide helpful and don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have!

Installing the Program

Now the first thing you should do is head to the MyHeritage website:

https://www.myheritage.com/

There you will need to click on the 'Sign Up' button.

You don't need to sign up right this second, but if you do so you get a free online version of your tree. It can only store 250 members on it, though! The backup can be helpful for sharing with other people, so long as you don't mind the cut off once you reach the limit. It will prompt you to pay money to upgrade your account once you do.

NOTE: The backup/online tree is optional! You aren't required to use it. Just make sure to cancel the backup whenever you see it crop up once the program is installed on your device.

For now you can click on the button to install the program and skip the registration.

Install the program as you would any other time and it should open automatically once finished! If you didn't sign up before, I think it prompts you to finish your sign up once installed. I made an account on the website so the program automatically signed me in. It registers the program to you. This doesn't mean it's a trial version and will expire, though some features are locked unless you're a premium member. We won't need to use any locked features, though!

Creating the Project

The program should look like this once you're signed in:

Click the 'New Project' button in the top left.

Make sure you uncheck this box, or the tree will think you're making your own personal family tree and will automatically add you!

Pick a catchy name for your tribe.

Make sure you uncheck this if you DON'T want an online version! It's your choice, it doesn't really matter which you choose at this point. You can always back it up later on.

And once everything has been done this should be what you're faced with! No members of the family exist yet but in the next part we will go through adding them to it.
Adding Adam and Eve
As I am playing in Story Mode, my first pair will be Adam and Eve. If you start in Sandbox mode this still obviously works the exact same way! Just put your own information in instead.

Adding Adam

First you need to click the 'Add Person' button, and 'Add Unrelated Person'. (Seeing as no one exists yet!)

Fill in the name of your starting creature. Adam in my case! You could even give them a surname if you want. I also put in Day 0 as Adam's birth date, though it would really be Day -1 seeing as he starts with 1 gem on his chest haha!

This is what the tree will look like once Adam has been added. You can see that his birth date will appear as the way we wrote it. I was very happy when I first found this out!

Now we need to add a picture for him! For this, I have decided I will head into the in-game family tree and screenshot that. This way the creatures all face the same way and have the same background. However, do feel free to take a screenshot of them while you're playing.

NOTE: The program allows multiple images per person so you can actually take screenshots as you're playing and then add them all to each person, even multiple people if you like!

On the bottom of Adam's panel, click 'Photos'.

I chose to say no to automatically searching my computer for images, as I needed to find the picture in my screenshots folder. I recommend you do the same to save time!

Click on 'New' and then 'New Photos' to bring up the Photo Wizard.

Click 'Browse' and follow the easy steps to get the image up and selected.

Leave all the above options selected, as the image needs to be assigned to Adam, and you now need to set the area where Adam's face is by editing the image. That might sound complicated but it's really not! You do this so that only his face is shown on his profile and not the whole image.

This will be what is shown to you. Basically, where the image is you can see a blue outline with white squares around the outside. You can resize the outline to fit the face/body of Adam. Don't be afraid to click the magnifying glasses to zoom in too!

You should have something like this once the outline has been resized.

Make sure the Personal Photo box is checked, and click OK to finish up!

To return to the main screen, click Tree along the top of the program. You can't miss it!

Now you should see Adam's little face in the corner of his box!

For his basic information, he is done. See the bottom of this section for adding further info, as well as ideas for what you could track!

Adding Eve

Eve will be added in much the same way as Adam was, so I won't go as in-depth for her.

Click 'Add Spouse' next to Adam to get the pop up window.

Fill in Eve's information as you did with Adam. For her birth date I put Day 0, even though she was already 9 days old when I found her. It should have been Day -2. But I prefer Day 0 and will go with this!

Next is putting the marriage status in. The bar along the bottom of the widget allows you to select what type of partnership they have. You can select from 'Married', 'Divorced', 'Partners', etc. I have chosen to use 'Partners' for my Nichelings, seeing as 'Married' doesn't really fit. But you can choose whatever one you like!

You can see here that Eve has now been added and shows next to Adam! Time to put her picture on her profile. You can follow the same steps that I did for Adam to complete this. It'll be good practice!

I took this screenshot, like I did with Adam. You can also see their first offspring has appeared! I always wait until they reach adulthood before taking a screenshot to add to their own branch of the tree.

Both Adam and Eve have now been added, and Eve displays her picture proudly!

Adding Information

The great thing about MyHeritage is you don't need to put actual birth and death dates! As you can see above, I opted to say that Adam was born on 'Day 0', which the program actually allows! This means you can say what exact day they were born on, died on, etc.

The 'Notes' section of each profile also allows you to keep any lore for your creatures in one place, and when anything noteworthy happens in your tribe you might want to keep track of. Did the Nicheling defeat a Bearyena? Did they ascend to a spot in your Niche Pantheon upon their death? Anything you want!

To add a note to them click the Edit button along the bottom of their box.

Click 'Edit Details'.

Then select 'Notes' along the top for a text box you can type anything in.

'Facts' is another option you can use, which will be handy for short fact files about the creature! This amount of customisation will be up to you to explore and discover, I'll no longer go over adding different information, except birth and death days.

Extra Info Ideas

Some things you could choose to keep track of:

  • Birth Dates
  • Death Dates
  • Mutations/Genes
  • Immunities
  • Noteworthy Encounters
  • Creature Lore
  • God/Goddess Status
  • Roleplay Info
  • Anything else you can think of!

Personally I chose to keep track of birth and death dates (or more specifically what day it happened on) and the immunities, so I could know at a glance of the tree who was compatible.
The First Children
Having played for a while now, I have the first few children born. They are all added in very similar ways to Eve!

These three were the first to reach adulthood:

Click the 'Add Son'/'Add Daughter' buttons underneath Adam and Eve to add the first children!

Fill the information in as before.

It should look like this once done! Clicking on each child will make them the focus of the tree. That way you can edit each one, add images, add other information, etc, to your heart's content! I won't go through that again, as I already went into detail when adding Adam and Eve.

As you play through, remember to keep adding new children you have! I actually made the mistake of having too many kids on the first island and when I left some behind they disappeared from the tree and are therefore missing on the one I'm making!

Adding Children as the Parent's Partner
In Niche, sometimes children and parents need to procreate to further the tribe. Preferably not, however, because immunity genes can get pretty messed up! The last thing you want is lots of sick babies. However, you can still add them as partners using MyHeritage! First, click on the parent you want to partner with the child. (Or vice versa)

Right click on them, hover over 'Spouses', and click on 'Manage Spouses'.

Click to 'Attach Spouse' and find the parent or child you wish to add.

You'll get this warning, but just click yes anyway.

And that's how you add a parent and child relationship!

Adding Siblings as Partners
Adding siblings as partners is just as easy as adding parents.

Find one of the siblings, right click them, 'Spouses', 'Manage Spouses'.

Click to 'Attach Spouse', and find the one you want.

This warning will pop up, but just click yes anyway. And voila!
Adding Wandering Nichelings
Pretty soon after getting settled on this island, a baby wandering Nicheling popped by to say hello! I adopted them because I needed that lovely K Immunity he came with! But now the question arrises, how to add them to the tree? Especially when they aren't related to any of the main family?

Well, you could add them as an unrelated person, and then tie them to the family by making them a partner of one of the offspring you have. But what happens if you add them and then they don't get the chance to breed? They'll be floating forever as an unrelated Nicheling and won't show up on the tree at all.

You can add them as an adopted child of the matriarch/patriarch of your tribe. Or an adopted sibling if they're closer in age and you want to do that! There are a few ways of doing it.

Adding as an Adopted Child

I have chosen to make them an adopted child of the matriarch/patriarch for this example because my thought process is that all tribe members look to the leader for guidance, no matter how old they are. I will only go over how to add an adopted child, but feel free to explore and do it in your own way!

My preferred way would be to only add wanderers that have contributed to the genes of the family and have produced a child. That way I can add them as a spouse rather than have to mess around and add them as a sibling or offspring.

NOTE: My matriarch/patriarch line always have a green/orange/blue gem combination. The first generation all have this combination, and after that only babies born with the home island immunity gene will be eligible to inherit the leadership role.

Boris was the wanderer I wanted to add!

Add the wandering Nicheling as a child like you would for the blood related children.

Then, click 'Edit' on the add children box. Click 'Children' and then 'Manage Children'.

Scroll until you get the wanderer, and change the 'Relationship' to 'Adopted'! This is a simple and easy way to incorporate wandering Nichelings into your tree.

You could do a mix of adopted siblings and adopted children, depending on the age the wanderer is when you find them. All up to you! Bear in mind you can't add siblings to Adam or Eve without having parents assigned to them.

Later on, when I show my exported tree, you will see I actually chose to only add wanderers as spouses. If wanderers had adopted siblings I would add 'Unknown' parents to them to allow me to make them official siblings. If you aren't careful it can get pretty complicated! Just take your time to think about what you want to do.

Adding as a Spouse

By this point I had a new child born from a wandering Nicheling I found and my only female child. So I added the Nicheling as a partner to her!

To do this, I right clicked on Ellie. Hovered over 'Spouses', then 'Manage Spouses', and clicked that. If you first click her and then try and add a spouse that already exists that way it creates a blank entry for an unknown person. I think it's a little bugged out!

Anyway, click this to get started adding the wanderer.

Click 'Attach Spouse' to add the already existing Nicheling.

Select the one you want.

Change the relationship to partners and click OK!

And that is two ways to add a wandering Nicheling to your tribe! I much prefer the second method, the only snag you might hit is if a wanderer you adopt into your tribe doesn't have a child... you run the risk of them not being added and being forgotten about. The way to avoid this is to make sure you breed them as soon as possible, even if you only get the one child from them.
Rogue Males?
I haven't encountered Rogue Males while on this playthrough yet, but I would suggest adding them as if they were a wandering male. Make them appear as a partner to the Nicheling so they appear as the father of the child. Or you can add a blank entry for the father and pretend you don't know who the father is. That way he will appear as 'Unknown' in the tree.
Displaying the Tree + Exporting
Now we have added some Nichelings to the tree we can try and display it!

By clicking on the Charts button you can choose different ways of outputting the data. Try out your own ones as it would take way too many images to show every single one! I usually use the descendant chart. To do that one, start by having either Adam or Eve selected and navigate to the chart drop down. Then click 'Descendants', and either horizontal or vertical. I usually use the latter.

You can see the many Nichelings I have! It gets a little confusing when a Nicheling has had more than one partner, like Ellie, but you can see that when the offspring descends from the father their connection goes down and then left, to signify that their father is above on their left side.

The tree won't quite look like that to you, as I have customised mine a little. You can customise the design by clicking the 'Options' button once you open the chart. Go through this yourself as, again, there are lots to look at and it'll take a long time to go through it in detail.

Once you are finished and you want to export the image as either a .jpg or a PDF file, click the 'Save' button and follow the very easy steps!

And that is it! I hope you found this guide extremely helpful. It took me a whole day to write! Please feel free to leave questions and comments below. :D

i use family echo. it's very simple and you can change the colors of things, including making the 'other' gender much easier to read on and less... blank. it's free and you can sign in with diff accounts (me with my 2 roleplay fam trees and three or so wolfquest ones thinking abt starting a niche one)

This seems much easier than my spreadsheet attempts at organizing..
KittHaven  [author] Aug 14, 2020 @ 9:22pm
It's purely for RP reasons or organisation. At a certain point the game culls old family members from the in-game tree, so this is a way of making sure you always have a copy of every family member. If you don't care about them, then you don't need to make an external tree at all. It doesn't really have an advantage in-game except making sure you don't lose old nichelings.

This is an extremely old guide though, haha. I haven't played Niche in a long time.
