How to input Chinese/Japanese characters (for new general or children)

Many people have trouble with inputing Chinese/Japanese characters in this game. Especially when their child is born in this game, they become stuck at the naming screen. This guide tells you exactly how to input names and become unstuck.

Basic Requirement: Windows 10 Pro

If you have Chinese or Japanese version of Windows 10 Home, then you can skip this section or this guide, because you are unlikely to have problem with this game.

If you have an English version of Windows 10 Home, then you have a bit of a problem with this game, because you need a feature in Windows 10 Pro or upward to display Chinese/Japanese characters.

If you have English version of Windows 10 Pro, you go to Regions and Language in Settings:



And you click on Administrative Language settings on the right pane. Then you will see this panel:



Assuming you have admin access, you then Change System Locale to whatever flavour of Chinese or Japanese. Now the English version of Windows 10 Pro can display Chinese/Japanese for RTKX.

Now you need to pick an input method in Windows, because RTKX will use whatever input method Windows uses. In the language section on the Regions and Language in Settings, you can add languages and input method. In this case I choose (中文)香港特別行政區 as additional language. In the Option menu you still need to pick an input method.

I pick the bopomofo method because it allows handwriting recognition, i.e. write characters with your mouse.



After you've done that, you are ready to play the game proper. You can add Japanese as additional language as well and then pick whatever Japanese input method you are comfortable with.

Inputing Chinese Characters in RTKX

Now most people have trouble with giving your children name, so I will walk it through on how to do it in Traditional Chinese. You can use this to give your new general name and legends as well.

I also recommend playing it windowed rather than full screen, since the aspect ratio is all wrong for most modern monitors. There is a guide already on how to do it so I won't repeat here.

This is the screen where most people are stuck when your child is born:



The solution is to click on the ENG language switcher in the taskbar, and switch to Bopomofo input method (or whatever input method you chose earlier):



You are likely still stuck in English. Pay attention to the task bar:



You still have to switch the input method to Chinese, just click on the icon on the taskbar to switch to this:



Now right click on 中 in the task bar and pick IME method, which is the handwriting method.



You can also choose characters by other methods e.g. strokes. Just Make sure the cursor is in name for your child, then input whatever name you want:


Remember to switch back to ENG once you are done playing the game.

And that's how you input name for your child and become unstuck.

i using Win11 also cant input chinese text, also cannot save and load the game as well

Thanks for this guide. First I add input method and it can show Chinese in Chrome but just ? in game. Then I change system locale too and it work in game. I just have Windows 10 Home, btw.

i can't do anything, i changed window default language to traditional chinese, downloaded input software with Big5 traditional chinese, nothing works for me

Thank you about suggestion using IME pad. But in the game using this way I still only output "?" no matter what chinese character I type. Any way to fix it so that I can keep play this game?
