Random Loot boxes from Vulgrim
Von NerArth
The scope of this guide is to give a short explanation about the loot boxes sold by Vulgrim. I will not cover anything about the location of Boatman Coins.

1.The Boxes
There are 4 different loot boxes which are sold by Vulgrim:
  • Gilded Box: Costs 1000 Gilt and 1 Boatman Coin
This box can contain an item of Enchanted quality.

  • Jeweled Box: Costs 5000 Gilt and 5 Boatman Coins
This box can contain an item of Rare quality.

  • Ornate Box: Costs 10000 Gilt and 8 Boatman Coins
This box can contain an item of Elite quality.

  • Legacy Box: Costs 50000 Gilt and 20 Boatman Coins
This box can contain a Possessed Weapon.
2.Boatman Coins info

There is a limited number of Boatman coins in the game, 100 of them per playthrough.
You can acquire all 100 of them in your first playthrough and another 100 in the New Game+ mode.

Note however that you can only do New Game+ ONCE, so technically there is a total of 200 coins, and if you miss any in the first playthrough, you'll basically have MISSED those that you didn't acquire.

I will not cover their locations because that's not the scope of the guide.
3.Spending your coins (all in one place)
Arguably, you should save up coins to buy only Ornate Boxes or Legacy Boxes, this is because any of the boxes will actually contain an item of the same level as your character and because as I've said there is a limited number of the coins.

There won't be any point in purchasing Gilded Boxes since their loot won't be that great and you'll just find something better or outlevel them soon enough, and there will be little point to purchase Jeweled Boxes too unless you're somehow stuck with sub-par gear, but even then it might just be a good idea to simply kill more mobs and etc to find better gear than getting a Jeweled Box.

So, you should buy Ornate Boxes or Legacy Boxes mid to end-game seeing that their loot will scale to your own level, making buying any box early on a bit of a waste.
Do note that the max level in the first playthrough is actually 22, and in the New Game+ it's 30.
Closing notes
This guide was made because I was confused about the Coins' limited number and about the Boxes' costs, and hopefully this guide serves as a faster way to understand how you want to spend your Coins.

Also take a look at my other guide here on Steam.

If you know something I didn't add and you want it added, let me know and it'll be so, giving you credit for the addition:

Thanks for the information. I just started playing and I'm currently level 7 or 8 and was thinking about buying a Legacy Box but I'll definitely hold off now.

Excellent little guide, I'd add to it saying that if you don't like the loot you get you can ALT-F4 before accepting the item and try again. In a sense you get "unlimited" boatman coins, at least until you find what you're looking for.

Well, the Boatman coins are for the Styx ferryman. I guess the reaper energy is sort of using the souls.

I understand where you come from saying it would make more sense for the currency to be souls, it would indeed be a much more obvious reference. But like Captain Foresight said, it also makes sense to think about older references (meaning there's a deeper meaning besides the obvious); such as that one with the boatman who is paid a dracma (drakma?) to ferry a person's soul across the river.

Really great guide cheers. GIl makes sense for death because of the Ferryman and other mythical creatures associated with death paid in coin..albeit silver coins. I can see what they were going for any way

Speaking of Gilt, it's kind of ironic how you deal with money in DS2 seeing how you are the Reaper of Souls. While War used souls blue souls as a currency in the first game.
