Sonic Adventure 2: Chao (The Basics)

This guide will explain how to take care of your chao.

So, You Want to Know About Chao?

Have you ever wondered about chao? Maybe these question have come to mind: How do I take care of chao? What does "that" mean? Why is it doing that? Is it supposed to look like that?...etc. I will answer all of these questions and many more in the following sections.

Chao Life Cycle

To put the chao life cycle simply:

1. Chao hatch from eggs (they are babies).
2. When the time comes for your chao to evolve, it will "cocoon"; and depending on what chao drives and animals you've given it when it was a child, will decide what your chao looks like when it is an adult. ( Note: Your chaos' appearance is based on what "type" of chao you have. It could be a running, swimming, flying, power, or neutral type chao).
3. After your chao becomes an adult it can still undergo gradual transformation yes, again, depending on what animals and chao drives you've given it.
4. The adult stage of your chaos' life is the longest. But, when the time comes your chao will "cocoon" again.
5. Depending on how happy your chao is before its second/final cocoon, your chao will either die, or come back to life...........so, make sure your chao is happy!
(Note: A pink cocoon indicates that your chao will come back to life, but, a grey cocoon indicates that your chao is......dead.

Let's Get Crackin'

In the picture below you will see Sonic and a chao egg. In the beginning of the game you will start out with two chao eggs. But, don't worry you can buy more from the black market (the black market is located inside of the chao kindergarten). I have listed the ways that you can hatch your eggs below.



There are three ways to hatch a chao egg:


1. You can wait for the chao to come out by itself.


2. You can shake the egg. (Shake it for about 5-6 seconds, then put the egg on the ground and your chao will come out).


3. Or, if you don't like waiting you can always.........HURL IT!!

Note: Hurling it may not be the best way to hatch your egg, as it may leave your chao a bit scrambled.

Now We Enter........(Pause for Effect)..........Parenthood!

Caring for your chao may seem like a task but it is really very simple. Here are a few things that you should know in order to be the best chao owner ever:


1. Make sure that you give your chao plenty of attention, petting and feeding them are the best ways to do this.







2. Do not abuse them! By this I mean: Throwing them, Hitting them, Kicking them, etc. If you do this it "will" eventually kill them. Whether you do it on purpose or by accident it will always have the same affect. So, try not to mistreat them.






As you can tell taking care of a chao is easy. Just, pet it, feed it, and DON'T abuse it!

Mating

When your chao becomes an adult it will be ready to mate. But, there are steps you need to take before there can be a bun in the oven......or.....a chao in the egg. However you want to put it.

Steps:
1. Make sure you have two adult chao.

2. Feed both of your chao a heart fruit. (You don't have to do this, but its alot quicker than waiting for step three to happen).



3. When flowers start to blossom around both of your chao (as pictured below) your chao are ready to mate.



4. Set one chao next to the other. (When a heart appears above the chaos' head, and music starts playing you know you did it right).

The fourth step only takes a few seconds......and then...........poof!



An egg appears between the two chao and you're done!

Let's Talk Stats

Each chao has what are called: Stats. They have five different ones that you can level up. They are: Power, Flying, Running, Swimming, and Stamina. If you raise the level of these stats, it will increase your chances of winning a chao race or-if you've gotten the dlc-chao karate.

You can level each of these stats up by giving your chao animals, chao drives, and fruit.

You can find animals through out levels of the game, they will either be in random places on the level or in chao boxes. There are a ton of them, so keep your eyes peeled.

You can find chao drives by destroying enemies through out the levels of the game.


There are four different colored chao drives: Yellow, Green, Red, and Purple.


Yellow= Raises your chao's swimming stat.
Green= Raises your chao's running stat.
Red= Raises your chao's power stat.
Purple= Raises your chao's flying stat.


To raise the level of your chao's stamina feed it fruit. Some fruits give more stamina than others.

I always thought that Chao were like children, in that you just feed them, clothe them, and try to keep them from killing each other. And sometimes when they misbehave, you have to beat them with the strap of a belt since the "Naughty Step" does not exist in the Chao Gardens.
