While there are a few ways there, eastwards from the town, most players early on would be on the west side past the farm. Following some landmarks, farm, fields, wind generators, it's easy to find the mine.

Also doing some mining, which gives iron, gold, brass and copper!

Ol Barney can't find a dang farm much less a mine. All I see are trees. I have Early Access Alpha 0.4.1 displaying in the lower right hand corner.

Once you exhaust the ore, save, then log to the main menu. Log back in (Continue), and all ores are back, but may change places. Also, after roughly 6 log-ins, you get fewer and fewer. So perhaps doing the first part, maybe 6 times per day, would be a good place to start.

any idea where to get saltpeter and sulphur?

Yes there's been some changes. I heard he even closed off parts (?) of it while remaking?

I wouldn't call 11 hours that fast, but had to work ;) Hope you work it out! Also, the pickaxe doesn't currently seem to lose durability mining. And saving, restarting while in the mine seems to refresh the ores too. Have been told sleeping 6-8h does the same too :)
