WHY VERSION ERROR MISMATCH

Version error mismatch is a way the engine is telling you have a different version of the game from the person you are trying to play with.

If you go inside the lobby you shall see all the players lobbies; of course there shall be many players playing different mods, but everyone is using the same channel, the multiplayer lobby.
Supposing I am playing the Forces of corruption game and another person is playing Republic at war mod, we shall see each other in the lobby, but whenever we try to join the same lobby, we shall get the version error mismatch because (fortunately) the engine doesn’t allow different versions of the game (alias different mods) to link.
To check if your version is the same as the other player, the lobby he created should be yellow, while all the others should be red.
If other players are playing the same mod as I am playing, we shall see each other in the lobby with a yellow match ready to be joined.

SOLUTION
If you put even one text file inside the folder and your friend doesn’t have it, the engine shall detect a difference and won’t let you play together in multiplayer.
If you want to avoid the version error mismatch you have to check if your base game folder has exactly the same files as your comrade.
The best solution I found so far is here (maybe there are many more, but I used this because in the past I got version error mismatch because I messed with some files in the base game folder).

Go to steam library and right click Star Wars Empire at War Gold Pack then click “Properties”

Then look for the “LOCAL FILES” tab

Then click “BROWSE LOCAL FILES”

The folder you shall see is the Star Wars Empire at War Gold Pack folder, which should be UNMODDED (NOT MODDED); that’s why it is called “Vanilla”. If you messed up (without knowing) with some files you won’t have an un-modded folder.
The easy solution is selecting everything is inside this folder and delete it.

Now you shall have an empty folder. We must tell Steam “Hey, my folder isn’t good, can you please solve the problem?”

Once more from the library go to the game, right click properties. This time you shall click on “VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES” and Steam shall redownload every file needed to play the game.

WHY NOT JUST UNINSTALLING?
I didn’t tell you just to uninstall because (I experienced this myself) If you uninstall, Steam shall erase only the files from the vanilla folder.
But what about the files you put or that shouldn’t be there? Steam shall leave them behind untouched …
And guess what? Once you have re-installed the game and get ready to play, you shall have version error mismatch again xD
That’s why me and my friend had to try many times before we could play easily without version error mismatch.
With this guide you shouldn’t see version error mismatch anymore.

I’m sorry If my English had some errors along the way but I’m not mother tongue so something may have slipped. Hope you solve version error mismatch as I did.

If this method didn't work for you, have your friends try it to see if its on their end. This is the way.
