Overview
This is a simple, easy-to-follow, spoiler-free guide, designed to provide a path to every achievement whilst enjoying a sense of roleplay and character continuity.

This guide is considered complete, encompassing 98/100 achievements, but there are two achievements not yet woven into the stories; Atheist and Quiet Reposession. These are explained in the comments at the bottom of the guide.

Designed for both first-time and veteran readers, these playthroughs will unlock all achievements quickly and easily by following the prescribed paths; they will also, however, provide an engaging and cohesive story from beginning to end, so this guide can also be used as a way to simply read Choice of Magics as a book, without worrying about hidden stats and the like.

This guide was produced using the Steam version of the game. All paths have been tested thoroughly but if you encounter any issues or have questions or suggestions then please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Disclaimer: This guide is in no way intended as an exhaustive guide of all possible options in this story. With just over 100,000 lines of code it's a very complex story with many varied possible permutations and outcomes.
Details
This guide is split into five playthroughs, one for each of the five schools of magic. Each of the five has multiple ending achievements that cannot be unlocked together. Therefore each of the five paths must be played multiple times to unlock every achievement. Additionally there are five possible romances in the story too, so we have one for each playthrough.

Please note that the choices must be taken as they're listed here - deviating from the provided path will usually mess something up later on due to many hidden stat checks. I've done my best to note where you can choose alternate options, though, so you have a bit of flexibility; see:

  • [Optional] You can choose these choices if you like for extra story - they won't affect your stats.
  • [Alternate] You can choose these choices instead for the same effect as the one before it.
  • [Choose] Any of the choices present can be chosen. The story might be different but we'll stay on the same path.

Recall that negation is useful for fights but leaves behind deadly clouds; divination reveals information to you but may also reveal information about yourself to someone else in the process; automation creates magical objects but worsens the ever-present storms; glamour makes you persuasive in the short term but wears away at your health; and vivomancy is the magic of life and often has unexpected long-term consequences.

From here make the choices you like in this epilogue.

[Achievement: Famous Last Words]

Teach glamors to entertainers, and use divination to spread their influence.

Agree to court the queen exclusively from now on.

Suggest we drive away the penguins together by brandishing our weapons.

Grab both luxgladiuses and direct the penguins across the caldera with them.

Hey no problem at all! You're very welcome. Enjoy!
Laëtis89 Sep 15, 2021 @ 10:40am
@bb Thank you so much for answering me and indicating the main requirements for Sam! X3
bb  [author] Sep 15, 2021 @ 4:24am
From memory: Yes, absolutely. I assigned a romance to each school of magic to keep it "simple" and avoid overcomplicating matters.

I've just had a glance at the code (source files three years out-of-date, FYI) and here are the main requirements I could see:

Must:

- Be attracted to men

And one of:

- Have relationship with Sam >= 60
- Taught him magic
- Sam is a Saint and relationship >= 50

Hope this helps - let me know if there's anything specific you're interested in and I can take a look.
Laëtis89 Sep 15, 2021 @ 2:22am
In your guide, are magic and romance interchangeable? For example for Glamour the RO is Sam, if I do Divination can I still choose Sam as my RO?
bb  [author] Sep 14, 2021 @ 1:19pm
Thank you very much indeed! Greatly appreciated.
Frezman Sep 14, 2021 @ 1:12pm
I went with glamour path like you've said but instead of becoming a saint I escaped from the cathedral. Throughout the game I tried to pick glamour choices whenever possible so as not to get another ending while also trying to keep my calculation above 50. At the end when the rot set in I chose "I can't think of anything else to try." and when I heard the voice "But I don't have faith. I never have, and I never will." (Requires calculation.)

Fantastic! No worries, glad to be of service. If you could leave any tips / guidance from your experience for others to use, that'd be super.
Frezman Sep 14, 2021 @ 12:06pm
I got it after a dozen more tries. Thanks for the guide.
Frezman Sep 14, 2021 @ 9:15am
I just can't get the "Atheist" achievement. Any tips besides choosing the glamor path and not being a saint?

Thanks for the handy info, cheers!
