In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to easily turn a photo into a pencil sketch. Let’s start with a simple black and white sketch effect. We’ll use Artipic Photo Editor tools to transform selected portrait to the b&w drawing. Further, you can play around and colorize the sketch.

Step 1
First, use the Crop tool to crop the image a bit

Step 2
Next, add a new layer, following Menu> Layer> New adjustment layer> Hue Saturation, in which the Saturation parameter is reduced to -100%, to turn the color image into black and white picture

Step 3
The next step is to duplicate the portrait layer and apply the correction to the new layer using Menu> Adjust> Invert

Step 4
Now change the blending mode for the inverted layer to Color Dodge, the image becomes wholly white (in most cases)

Step 5
The next step is to apply the filter Menu> Filter> Gaussian blur with the Radius parameter about 10 – 15 r to the inverted layer with the Color Dodge overlay mode.

Step 6
Now there are little touches left. Add a new adjustment layer Menu> Layer> New adjustment layer> Levels, if necessary, move the middle slider a little to the left and (basic!) Change the blending mode to Multiply. To avoid a strong contrast, we reduce the opacity of the correction layer, I reduced it to 31%

Step 7
Now let’s colorize the drawing. To do this, create a mask for the Hue Saturation adjustment layer (it must be the upper one). You can create a mask by selecting Create mask from the context menu that appears when you right-click a layer. Now take the Eraser tool of large diameter with soft edges and opacity less than 100% (we used 35%) and outline the portrait until you get the desired level of color saturation. Our pencil sketch is ready!
