Greetings, everyone.

Today we’re testing Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the last game from the revamped trilogy of games by Crystal Dynamics, with the PC version brought here to us by Nixxes, once again.

My current PC specs are the following:

-CPU: i5 4690K@4.4 GHz with Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO.
-Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger (Z97).
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and latest WHQL driver (399.24).
-RAM: 16 GB DDR3@1866, 9-10-9-28.
-Storage: Kingston SSDNow 300, 240 GB (O.S.), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB (Game).
-O.S: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit with latest updates.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz

First off, I’ve read and seen that in fact this game has way better DirectX 12 implementation than almost any other game, and certainly than its predecessor, Rise of the Tomb Raider. That’s amazing, though I’m on windows 7 and I’d rather test DirectX 11 since as of the date of making this video I could hardly find decent material out there testing DirectX 11 performance for this game, and if I happened to find any it was done with a beefy CPU and not something like my 4690K. So there you go, if you’re on Windows 10 of course do test both APIs, and then just use the best for you, hopefully DX12 keeps being used as it should be and not added as patches on DX11 games.

That said, this game is certainly a good PC version, like the previous two games. I was expecting worse performance than Rise, but ended up feeling quite good seeing that this game runs about the same as its predecessor, and looks even better in certain areas due to extra material details, effects, much better antialiasing solutions this time around, in form of temporal AA, SMAA with temporal together or even a triple combo of SMAA, TAA and MSAA mixed up together….simply amazing, and best of all, no vegetation shimmering at last.

The game offers quality presets from Lowest to Highest, which in this case is not Ultra-maximum-everything, and we need to tune up some stuff to reach that Ultra status for our settings: Shadows, LOD and Contact Shadows can go a notch higher than the Highest preset, and so does Anisotropic Filtering, despite this being quite amusing anyway, yeah, we’re still getting sub 16x Aniso for our presets these days.

Anyway, since this game has a very nice benchmark tool, most of the video is about running that over and over, because this way most people will be able to properly compare with their rigs on an even scenario.

Afterwards I also run around a bit here and there, testing some of the settings a bit more deeply and overall performance in the Peruvian Jungle area.

Overall, this game can get CPU bound pretty easily on a 4 core CPU like mine, but if you don’t mind setting a 60 FPS cap via Rivatuner, then it’s difficult to get any stutter related to high CPU usage in those areas where I can achieve 70-80+ FPS, which are many.
