Imagine if a race was naturally like a "primordial" ooze, but sentient and already capable of making tools. But being a thinking ooze, it can rearrange matter around it on a smaller scale. Think molecular if given time.

Over time, this ooze discovers controlled electrical discharges, circuits, and computing logic... and can more easily and directly interface its "nervous system" with these electronic extensions than more solid races. A malleable ooze seems far more agreeable to becoming cyborgs and expanding their own thinking ability in the process.

That is quite possibly how the modern Engies came to be.

I'd say there should be less contrast between the different parts of the Engi's body. They seem to be made up of interchangeable parts that can rearange as needed. Sort of like the Replicators from Stargate, but not evil, and without a need to look like humans.

Before seeing this I thought them to look like vortigunts from half life
