How to fix flashlight lag
By CoreRelief
Flashlight lag is annoying, the game goes from a solid 60 FPS to 10-15 FPS, it constantly stays at 10-15 FPS until you turn off the flashlight, and sometimes even some of the other lighting effects can lag the game, this guide will tell you how to quickly fix the flashlight lag.

I am unlikely to respond to comments as i am unlikely to see them.

The fix:
The fix is simple, you must open the settings, go to "video" and click on "advanced", now go to "shadow detail" and change it from "high" to "medium", if you still get lag then set it to "low", that should fix it.

Settings > Video > Advanced > Shadow detail > Medium or low.

Make sure you apply these settings.

if you have a decently powerful pc then the env_projectedtexture should not cause any lag. My game stays at the game's FPS cap of 300 FPS even with flashlight on with only an RX 570 4GB.

can confirm this really does work. Though please note, that you have to restart the game I think, so some people may have lowered the shadows and thought it didn't work

My settings were on high by default, i guess this is because my PC is more than powerful enough to run hl2.

There is a better solution - just don't change default settings. I had flashlight lag in every source game, but in hl2 you can fix it, Default settings are marked with * icon(so don't cnange filtering, don't enable antialiasing, don't change water detail and don't change textures to very high). I think it's a problem only for amd videocards, bacause i tested hl2 on different pcs with amd videocards and this problem still was a thing.

set it to high, maybe that will help

I have Shadow detail set to Medium.

Nope, this just randomly became an issue for me around when i created this guide. The game runs perfectly fine for me, and i this was the only issue i had. This issue also only became a problem after many hours of playing the game. Think a more recent patch caused it.
