21:9 - Cutscene & UI Hotfix

This is a brief guide on how to apply a simple hotfix to resolve the 21:9 Cutscene & UI issues.

21:9 - Cutscene & UI Hotfix

This is for version 1.0 of the game and Shenmue 1 only!

This guide breifly covers how to improve the UI and Cutscene elements when running in 21:9. Warning this will still have blackbars as the cutscenes will run in 16:9 and the UI will be slightly stretched. I'm unsure how to resolve this issue but be sure to comment if you know a way to resolve this and I'll add it to the guide!

The fix is simple enough, first open the Shenmue 1 executable from the Steam install location (Steam Library\steamapps\common\SMLaunch\sm1...) in your hex editor of choice (HxD in my case).


Then click search and replace and enter the values as show above and written below:

Search for - 39 8E E3 3F
Replace With - 8E E3 18 40
Datatype - Hex-values

Hit okay and make sure to save!

And that is it, open up the game and the UI should be behaving itself far better than out of the box. Again there is some issues with stretched UI and 16:9 cutscenes which could maybe be improved with additional hex edits but I've exhausted my knowledge!

Warning: The above was done for 3440x1440 display, for 2560x1080 you may need to use the hex value "26 B4 17 40" instead of "8E E3 18 40".

EDIT: Side note, with the wonderful expertise of Esspiral from the Shenmue Dojo you can now get 21:9 cutscenes using the hex value "39 8E 63 40" but be warned this will stretch the UI even more so will be *unplyable* for most.

I'll check when I get home in a few hours. Looks like it should according to D3T's patch notes but I suspect it will make the cutscenes 4:3. See:

Fixed incorrect button prompts shown in some QTE events when using mouse and keyboard.
Fixed various instances of incorrect help screen text displayed around the game.
Fixed duplicated button prompts in QTE Title 2.
Fixed an issue with 2560 x 1080 UI resolutions.

Also at @cfwsal I'll check Shenmue II tonight but I don't think the fix will work. I'll add a note to the guide.
