VonT's WW2 RP, General Knowledge and Trainers Guide.
By VonTAnpleGearr
A Guide for WW2 Role-players to use for Training and General knowledge. This guide is meant to be far more detailed compared to most training guides out there, so if you are the kind of person who falls/fell asleep in class, I would recommend skipping out on this guide.

There is also a list of some of the add-ons for those who don't own them.

This guide is no longer being worked on.

Introduction
Hello, Welcome to my 1930s / WW2 RP Training guide (Acting as if someone actually gives a ♥♥♥♥ about training in this game mode), this guide will go over the basics such as:

- Ranks
- Faces
- Basic Formations
- Role-play Commands
- Description

As well as some more advanced courses such as:

- Insignia identification
- Role-play Etiquette
- Character Development
The Wehrmacht
The Wehrmacht is the name for the combined-forces of the Military of Nazi Germany, the specific branches of them are:

- Heer (Army)
- Luftwaffe (Air Force)
- Kriegsmarine (Navy).

Each of these branches have very different ranks, so I'd recommend only looking at your specified branch (I've only written Luftwaffe/Heer, due to the lack of presence of the Kreigsmarine during my time on the game mode.) and memorising it's ranks, the only exception to this would be if you are constantly working with other branches on a server, then it would be important to at least memorise the CO and GO ranks.
Ranks of the Heer
The list Starts with the highest ranks and works it's way to the lowest. (These ranks are also just blanket ranks, so if you are in a special unit it may be better to look up the ranks for them, although usually only the first two ranks are affected)

Oberfeldwebel = Master Sergeant
Feldwebel = Technical Sergeant
Unterfeldwebel = Staff Sergeant
Unteroffizier = Sergeant

Enlisted Men

Stabsgefreiter = Senior Lance Corporal (Same as Obergefreiter. Mostly used by Quartermasters, and considered a NCO nearing the final years of the war 1944 to around 1945, the rank was also suspended in 1934 and was reintroduced in 1942)
Obergefreiter = Senior Lance Corporal
Gefreiter = Lance Corporal
Obersoldat/Obergrenaider/Oberschütze = Private 1st Class

might use Soldat, while another uses Schütze.)
Ranks of the Luftwaffe
The list Starts with the highest ranks and works it's way to the lowest. (These ranks are also just blanket ranks, so if you are in a special unit it may be better to look up the ranks for them, although usually only the first two ranks are affected)

Military Faces
This topic is usually known by most people who play Divided Germany / WW2 RP, however there are still some people who don't know it, as such it will be explained here, if you know about this already, feel free to skip this.

Faces are directional commands issued to soldiers, usually only reserved for Parades and roll call, this has become the most widely known, yet most useless pieces of information during training.

Left Face = 90 Degree turn to the left
Right face = 90 Degree turn to the right
About face = 180 degree turn over the right shoulder
Front face = a turn over the right shoulder to face a currently speaking Officer.
Basic Formations
Basic formations are usually the most basic formations you will learn on any server, most servers have training for these ones. They are however very similar to faces as in the fact that no one really uses them, however they can be used in some rare instances during combat, but are mostly used out of combat.

- Line = Everyone lines up shoulder to shoulder and faces the CO. (Also doubles as Firing line)

- Column = Everyone lines up behind each other, facing the back of each other's head.

- Double Column = Similar to column however instead of one column, two columns are made, there is also
space in-between the columns to allow the CO to walk in-between them. Usually has the CO / Officer
standing at the front right in front of the gap.

- Arrowhead = Everyone lines up in a Triangle position very similar to an arrowhead, this is mostly
used during patrols. If a uneven amount of soldiers are assigned on Patrol one will stand in the
centre of the Arrowhead usually behind everyone else.
Role-play Commands
Role-play commands are fairly basic, but they can help you depending on the mood of the situation.
/me

/roll

/it

/me: Is the most commonly known command. Most people are aware of it, even people who aren't GMod RPers. For those few who aren't aware of the command, /me is used to describe actions. Once written it will place your character's name in front of what you wrote.

e.g. Correct Way to use: Written Command: /me sits himself down onto the chair.
Once Entered: (Person) sits himself down onto the chair.
Incorrect way to use: Written Command: /me kills person
Once Entered: (Person) kills person

/it: It isn't used very often, which is a shame, however /it is used to describe the situation, or outcome of one. Unlike /me it won't show your Character's name which makes it great for describing an area and can be used to describe the outcome of an action, I would recommend only writing your First name, so they can't complain about you not rolling.

e.g. Written Command: Description of area: /it The room is rather dark and smells terrible.
Action Outcome: /it (Person) kicks (Person) successfully, making him fall to
the ground.
Once Entered: Description of area: The room is rather dark and smells terrible.
Action Outcome: Hans kicks Heinrich successfully, making him fall to the
ground.

/roll: Roll is a very simple command, it randomly selects a number from 1 to 100. If you get above or on 50, that action is successful. Some people might switch the rules to accept numbers below 50 as a success, however the above 50 approach makes more sense to me.Never-the-less the above/below 50 rule does not apply to when /me fighting. (Which will be under types of Role-play and Role-play etiquette.) For now the basic command.

e.g. Written Command: /roll
Once Entered: (Player) rolls 75

Descriptions
This part goes into detail about how to create a description for most serious RPs. This one is mainly aimed at Nut-script, but could work for Clockwork, albeit much more brief then Nut-script.

The first part of the description is very simple, the description is intended to be about your physical appearance, so instead of writing your life story, write about what your character looks like and allow people to talk to you, and exchange your life stories, which in turn can lead to a new comrade and allows your character to grow more. Instead of being limited to a description that you may have just made on the spot, as you can create a description as you play.

What it should look like: [Caucasian] [Pale skin] [Appears to be in his Early 30s] [Small Build] [6"2"] [Khaki M42 Field Cap] [Brown Regulation cut] [Blue Eyes] [Dusty Khaki M40 Feldbluse] [Black Binoculars around his Neck] [Brown Y Strap, With Kar98K Ammo pouches attached to the front] [Black Belt, with the Wehrmacht Buckle] [Dusty Khaki M22 Trousers] [Rugged Black Jack Boots] [Kar98K slinged on his back, With a Black Strap]

OR: [Caucasian] [Pale skin] [Appears to be in his early 30s] [Small build] [6'2'] [Brown hair] [Blue eyes] [Standard Afrika Korp uniform]

An important thing to mention, is that you don't need to make a great description at the start, as long as it is passable like the ones above, or any that talks about physical appearance then you should be good, you can then later build onto your description as you think of what you want your character to look like.
Insignia Identification
Identifying the insignia of a fellow or enemy soldier can be an extremely important tool which can save you from many disastrous situations. Every soldier, if they are wearing the proper uniform, will have a certain insignia on their uniform which can help you identify their rank and position. It is important to pay attention to rank rather than uniform, as for example, a high ranking officer does not necessarily have to be wearing fancy breeches and a peaked cap. The conventions of insignia you will find on a standard German uniform are the: Shoulder boards, Sleeve Insignia, Piping, Collar Tabs and Armbands.

Shoulder boards: Shoulder boards are one of the easiest to identify and common ways of telling one’s rank. However, Shoulder Boards as an insignia are generally worn only by NCOs, Officers and Generals. Most Shoulder boards will have a number of pips to designate rank. In simplicity, the more pips there are, the higher the rank. NCO Shoulder boards have the unique exception of using bars to define a select few of their ranks, otherwise they also use pips. Officers adhere to the pip system as well, although Officer’s will have a special silver wire braiding for a Shoulder board rather than a simple cloth one as seen with NCOs. Generals also use wire braids for Shoulder boards, although theirs, as with much of their uniform, are in a gold colour. The only other exception to Shoulder boards is the Generalfeldmarschall, as with the length of their name, they just simply can’t help themselves not to flex on literally everyone. Thus they have two Crossed Batons on their Shoulder boards. Shoulder boards are both the easiest and most important insignia to learn, as it is the main definition of COs and other people of the highest importance.

Sleeve Insignia: Sleeve Insignia are far more complex than the simplicity and elegance of the Shoulder Boards, as they vary greatly based on which faction you are a part of. In general, the rank off the individual will be on the wearer's left arm. The ranks often vary through the use of chevrons, the more chevrons, the higher the rank. It is necessary for one to learn the different ranks by sight before one could hope to be able to identify it, as different factions have different appearances and methods of displaying Sleeve Insignia. Sleeve Insignia are seen primarily on Enlisted Men, however are also present on Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe staff. If a person, such as an Officer, who would normally not use Sleeve Insignia, is wearing a covering piece of clothing such as a Smock Coat, they will have Sleeve Insignia on it. Sleeve Insignia is an important convention to be able to identify, as it is the primary representation of the most common class of soldiers, the Enlisted Man.

Piping: Piping is an insignia convention which does not convey rank, it alternatively conveys the branch of the wearer. Piping is most often seen on the edges of Shoulder boards, Hats and Collar Tabs. Since there are too many branches with unique Piping to name, it is up to you to learn as many as you see fit. My personal suggestion is that you take it upon yourself to learn the Piping of any active branches on the server. For example, a man wearing distinctive Blue Piping with a normal Heer uniform is a member of the Logistics department, whereas a man wearing Yellow Piping with a black Panzer uniform is a member of the Signals department. Piping is an extremely important insignia to learn, although unfortunately many have not yet bothered to pay any attention, which may lead to some severe consequences in the future.

Collar Tabs: Collar Tabs are a very simple piece of insignia, with not a great deal of variety or differences between one another. Collar Tabs are quite shockingly found on an individual's collar and most of them follow the same shape or pattern. Collar Tabs sometimes vary between department, for example the Luftwaffe would use a different symbol on their collar than that of the Heer. The only faction where Collar Tabs play a major role in identifying rank is the NSDAP, which have a large and complex variety of Collar Tabs, which even I haven't sat down and learned yet. The only other developments with Collar Tabs falls under piping, with colour differences based on department. In any case, learning Collar Tabs can come in use primarily to those who seek political roles within the NSDAP, considering that if one is tasked with giving a man a uniform, it is up to you to choose the right one.

Armbands: Armbands are a unique insignia convention, exclusive entirely (to my knowledge) to the NSDAP. Much like the Collar Tabs, if you are interested in becoming a politician in the NSDAP, learning the different Armbands your peers wear will become a valuable skill to have. Learning the differences between Armbands also may come into use for those outside of the NSDAP, as it can give an individual who may interact with NSDAP officials on an occasional basis the ability to easily distinguish ranks between them.

Miscellaneous: Some other obscure insignia which are not too common are Gorgets, a plate-like object which hangs around a wearer's neck. The Gorget is almost exclusively worn by the Feldgendarmerie or other Military Police units, making them the most easy to identify department other than a gold-laden General looking like King Midas' wet dream. Another very uncommon insignia convention is when a Reichsadler is present on the side of a Field Cap, this generally denotes an Officer, however, instances of this is exceptionally rare. Kriegsmarine Officers and Generals use a special Sleeve Insignia, which can be found on their sleeve collars. This insignia convention uses different Bars, which wrap around the sleeve. Generally speaking, the more Bars, the higher the rank, if it is an exceptionally thick Bar, that denotes the highest rank.
Uniforms of the Heer
Ahead of time I apologise for the Image choices, however I need them to illustrate the differences between the look of the uniform.

Knowing the specifics of the Uniform isn't generally sought after on most WW2 RP servers, however I'd recommend that you'd just use the images for a reference of what you like most, but do keep in mind that you can't use a M44 Tunic (invented in 1944) in 1940. If you want further details of the Uniforms characteristics I'd recommend going on the WW2 Ranks and Insignia Wikipedia and look under the uniform section.

Role-play Etiquette
Role-play Etiquette is a important part of playing on any Role-play game mode as it helps RP to remain smooth, and easier on both parties involved, and generally speaking can lead to less frustrating scenarios where one party could get pissy with the other. I'll only give over-views of the Etiquette/Courtesy as it really depends on the server as to how it is follow. Furthermore there are a lot of servers that don't follow this, so if you want you can skip this section entirely.

Passive Role-play:

- No real Etiquette exists for this, apart from doing something stupid like /me sucks my own ♥♥♥♥.

You are free to do anything you want in passive RP as it only affects you, and no one else. Do keep in mind to try and keep mingeyness to a minimum (But do feel free to indulge in it slightly).

Combat Role-play:

- Don't write what you are going to do to the person directly (i.e. /me strangles the man) instead write it as if you are attempting to do the action (i.e. /me attempts to strangle the man) and once you roll higher, that is when you write that you done that action to them.

- Don't roll when someone writes the outcome of the last roll, they won the last roll, so let them write what they are doing to you in the moment, once they are done feel free to roll against their next action or roll against a continued action (strangling, restraining, etc). I'll leave a short example below this for you.

Hans Steiner attempts to tackle the Russian so he can try to strangle him
Vladimir Dostoevsky pulls out his bayonet, and attempts to try and stab the German
Hans Steiner rolls 56
Vladimir Dostoevsky rolls 55
Hans Steiner tackles the Russian and begins to strangle him
Hans Steiner then attempts to take the bayonet out of the Russian's hand to disarm him
Vladimir Dostoevsky attempts to stab the German in the shoulder, to get him off of him
Hans Steiner rolls 5
Vladimir Dostoevsky rolls 8
Vladimir Dostoevsky stabs the German in the shoulder, forcing the German to loosen his grip off of his neck

Keep in mind that Combat RP is dynamic, so as seen in this example the German has the initiative, thus the German is able to try and attack the Russian, whilst the Russian has to try and beat his roll to gain the Initiative to allow him to kill the German.

Medical Role-play

- Same thing applies to Medical RP as combat RP, write that you attempt to do an action, as
usually the individual isn't retrained so they can roll against you and thwart your action. Mind you
this is usually only with cases like Battlefield surgery (which you should avoid) and actions that
would cause extreme pain to the individual.
- Don't roll for extremely basic actions (i.e. Bandaging someone, or setting up a splint on them) you
just look like an idiot when you roll low for it, the only time you should try to do it, might be in a
combat situation while under fire, but for the most part. Basic actions are not to be rolled for.
- This is a preference choice but I'd highly recommend it if you are on a serious RP server. Always
prepare before battle, or any conflict by preparing medical equipment, or by making your own
crude versions in a campaign (i.e. Soaking torn strips of shirt in whiskey/vodka or some high spirit,
to somewhat disinfect it) It just adds tension in a game, when you don't have the needed supplies
to help someone in the field. But this kind of action is rarely seen in most Modern WW2 RPs so
use it at your own risk.

As I stated above a lot of this is fairly generic and broad, but knowing some of these tips/etiquette can help improve your Role-play satisfaction when both parties use it. But do keep in mind that not every servers follow the same pieces of etiquette so it is important to learn how the server deals with role-play situations, and how it expects you to act. If there is no established system though, feel free to use some of these on it.
Character Development
When you make a character on any Role-play server, it should be an extremely important thought as you can create a whole new person, with extremely different views, and personality from yourself, or you could have a character that represents you, it's all up to you how you make your character, but do keep in mind that just as you are not the same as you were when you were a little kid, your character ages and matures through the experiences you take them through, and you should do your best to develop them as the server progresses.

This specific part I can't offer a silver bullet to, due to your character going through different experiences then any of mine. But I'll write about two specific events that can cause character development just keep in mind that it is all up to you as to how you approach your character's development through events.

Positive Event:

The Positive Event is something that occurs to your character that reinforces the image they already have (i.e. That the army is well organised and neigh invincible, if you easily win a battle)

Negative Event.

The Negative event is something that occurs to your characters that shatters a perceived image that had, or begins to question it, it's up to you whether you stubbornly continue to hold the belief and get ore defensive of it, or to completely change your opinion. But it is the most noticeable change in character development.

But there are more ways a character can develop, such as making friends with other people, and exploring their past, some simple ways to give motivation and add a layer of depth to your character can be done with a few of these points, although feel free to make your own questions:

What's your hometown like?
What's your Family history? Are you a Noble? or just a Regular family?
What are you parents like?
Do you have any Siblings? What are their names? How old are you?
Did you have any Childhood friends? What are their names? What did you do together?
Do you have a Girlfriend/Wife? What's her name? How did you guys meet?
How old are you?
When did you Enlist? Why did you Enlist?

Again don't feel constrained by this, I would highly recommend that you use these questions in conjunction with ones that you make yourself to further develop your character's backstory, and adding another layer to your character.
WW2 German NPCs II Heer: Models
Since there's a ridiculous ammount of models (863 last time I looked at it) for The Germans currently, don't expect this section to have everything in it for a while, especially since Syntax and Strudel are releasing the third renditions it will take longer. I also do have versions which aren't supported anymore so I do need to go through it, however for the current time I will put the Standard Heer, Luftwafe, Kriegsmarine and the Generals up.
