Installing Darkplaces & the OST (Base game + mission packs) for play through Steam.
By Murderlol
I made this guide because I keep seeing people online asking the same questions over and over: how do I make Quake look better and how do I get the music working? This guide is by no means the end-all be-all guide to either problem, but it's a quick and easy solution to both issues. There are numerous other sourceports out there that should do the same thing, as long as they support .OGG music files.

Darkplaces + Music Tutorial for Quake (Steam)
-Installing Darkplaces-

Download the Darkplaces sourceport for Quake 1 (I use windows 10 64 bit so I used the first link under Latest stable/official release):

https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html

Just copy all of the files and folders into your main Quake directory.

-Downloading and placing the music files-

Then get the soundtrack files here:

https://www.quaddicted.com/files/music/

or here:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119489135

Unzip the campaign sountrack zip file and extract the files into the proper folder. For the original game, they go into Quake\Id1\music. For the first mission pack they go into hipnotic\music and for the second they go into rogue\music.

-Making Darkplaces run through Steam-

Go to your Quake directory and delete WinQuake.exe.

Rename the Darkplaces executable to WinQuake.exe. Now you can launch Darkplaces from Steam and the music will play like it should. Make sure when you launch Quake you select the first option, GL Quake is a different executable and it won't work. The mod will modernize the visuals a bit and the controls but is mostly the same game as the original iirc. Enjoy.

Edit: If you are having trouble making it work with this guide, try a fresh reinstall of both Quake and Darkplaces. Back up your save files first though if you have any.

So, I tried everything I could, but the music just won't play in DarkPlaces.

@Sam They're two different engines so you can't really use them at the same time. You could have two separate installs and use them individually though. If you're worried about the music, Quakespasm already supports that so there's no need for DP if you prefer the more "vanilla" experience of Quakespasm.

I've been wondering if I can somehow use DP while I also have Quakespasm installed

@Field Marshal Zhukov Perhaps a file got renamed or moved but I wouldn't know without looking at it. Also, make sure that the tracklist.cfg file is pointing to the correct file names.

If none of that works then I'd just try a fresh reinstall quake/darkplaces/soundtrack.

Hey man, I've tried everything here and although some of the tracks play, the music at the menu never does

You're welcome!

Thank you, that did work! Love this game. Been a huge Quake and Quake 2 fan since they came out. Got it working with my Rift S but makes me motion sick lol. Appreciate the help.

@OldSchoolSk8r I'm not sure, I've never seen that before. I'd try uninstalling and deleting all the files and do a fresh install.

Question on this. I did exactly what you said, but in Quake now, it seems like it is zoomed in on my weapon and the weapons I use are like above my head if that makes sense?
