How to make a start menu in VNE (outdated)
By Incuboy
This is just a way to make a "Start Menu" for your VN's so they can be a bit cooler I guess.

Basically...
So tbh, this is pretty much just putting a choice command and making it look like a title screen by using the commands for an unintended purpose I guess.
How to make the Title Screen (outdated)
So I'm just going to give you the script for the menu and some tips on how to use your title like a real game screen (it's not perfect but it get's the job done).
StartScript.txt
[IMG]+(Title/Background).jpg
[SHOWBG]
[BGM]+(title music).mp3
[CHOICES]+(blank/game title)+text+Start Game+Startgame.txt+Scenes+Scenes.txt+Credits+Credits.txt
  • So you should always have at least the "Start Game" option in your title so that people can obviously start the game.
  • You probably want credits or something just so that people can see who helped you make the VN or maybe just put in some of your social media accounts on there so people can know how to friend and follow you.
  • I thought that having the "Scenes" selection was smart just in case someone wanted to leave your VN but could at least be sent to the part closest to where they last left off without having to play through the whole thing
  • The "[SHOWBG]" is there so that you don't have that annoying black box in front of your title when people see the menu.
  • The selections and .txt's can be named whatever you want but I just think it's simpler that way
  • Don't forget that you can only have a max of 10 choices so don't go crazy with your menus
StartGame.txt (or whatever you name it)
So for the "StartGame.txt" you're going to want to just make this the "Start" button on your title screen so people can start the game, simple. This is where your actual game will begin. Also just an FYI, please don't forget to put back the black box so people can see your text when the game starts with the "[SHOWBG]" command and stop the music with the "[STOPSOUND]" command so that you don't have the tile screen music playing in the beginning of your game.
Scenes.txt (or whatever you name it)
So for the "Scenes" section (if you add it) I would just put in another background image so it's not boring and then another [CHOICES] command so you can be sent to the script/txt where they last left off.
Credits.txt (or whatever you name it)
In the "credits" section I put an image of things such as: Songs, Creator, Illustrator, etc. so that people can credit for things or if someone enjoyed one of the songs then they could find the name of it and find it on YouTube or something. Another approach would be to add in an image of your social media names or Steam name so that people can find you if they are a fan of your work. Another FYI, because there is no feature to send the player back to the title screen I would put a timer to send them back to the title so they don't have to close and re-open the game.
Thanks.
Thank you guys for checking this out, let me know if you guys need some better explanations or something. Also I would love if you guys sent me your VN's to see how creative you get with your tilte screens and your great stories!
