Maduin Memento Guide
By Alt Q Q
Seems like many people have difficulty beating this minigame so here is a simple guide for players trying to get the Maduin momento.

Unlocking requirements
In order to access this momento, you just need to clear the story until the five Cogna lords. The momento is a reward for clearing the Figaro intervention quest. Besides clearing the quest, you have to beat the Sandstalkers minigame in lesser than 10 player turns and zero casualties. Due to the additional conditions, I don't recommend moving your piece unless necessary as movement counts as a turn and the enemy gets a free hit.

***WARNING: THE MINIGAME IN THE TWIN'S ROOM WILL NOT AWARD YOU THE MADUIN MOMENTO***

  • The minigame itself is basically a 5x5 battleship gameboard with moveable pieces.
  • Both you and the enemy team have 3 pieces, L/Terra (3HP), M/Shelke (2HP) and S/Vivi (1HP).
  • You are required to place your pieces in the order of Terra, Shelk and Vivi. If you messed up the placement, you can always redo the placements during the confirmation. You should always spread out your pieces to have the optimal coverage.
  • Once you placed the pieces, the minigame will start and either you or the enemy team will move first.

  • If a piece is hit by the other team, the HP reduces by 1, and the piece is out of the minigame at 0HP.
  • Each piece can attack the surround squares but not the square they are on.
  • If an attack is made around the square of a piece, a 'resist' will appear.
  • If there are no pieces on the attacked square or the surrounding squares, a 'miss' will appear.

Understanding the moves
I am using A1 square as an example but the same mechanics is applied to the rest of the board.

  • Scenario 1; An attack is made on A1, a 'miss' appears.
No pieces are at squares A1, A2, B1 and B2.

  • Scenario 2: An attack is made on A1, a 'resisted' appears.
No pieces at A1.
At least one piece is located at A2, B1 or B2.

  • Scenario 3: An attack is made on A1, a 'hit' appears.
1 piece is at A1.
Possible to have another piece at A2, B1 or B2.

  • Scenario 4: Enemy attacks A1.
1 or more piece must be at A2, B1 or B2.

Movement of enemy pieces
Whenever a enemy piece moves X step, it literally meant the squares the piece move.
Eg; L move right 4. If the piece is at A1, it will be at A5.
Strategy
The strategy is pretty straightforward once you can read the moves.

If you are unsure of the ideal placements, I recommend B2(Terra), E2(Shelke), and E5(Vivi).

  • If you make the first move or are clueless where the enemy pieces are
Attack the squares at A1, D1 and E4. If you attack those 3 squares, you should some information if there are any enemy pieces beside your pieces. It is entirely possible that all the enemy pieces are at the lower 9 squares at the left.

Drawing a 5x5 board on a paper can help to track the movement of the pieces.

Vivi is your weakest piece so do not use him to move and attack, a single hit on him and there goes your momento. Keep him at the corner of the board and only for attacking. If movement of your pieces are required, move Terra or Shelke.

Do note there are still RNG elements such as the enemy pieces being at the same square as your piece. But once you understand the minigame, getting the momento is not difficult.
AI Logic
The AI pattern so far appears to be in the following priority.

  • If they located your piece, they will attack non-stop till the piece is 0HP.
  • If their pieces are attacked, they will move X squares aways from the spot, if you attacked them after they moved, they will go in the opposite direction i.e. left to right, right to left or top to bottom, bottom to top.
  • If no pieces are attacked or located, randomly attack a spot.

I managed to get the Maduin Memento during the intervention quest in 12 turns. I don't think there's a turn limit at all, just ensure you don't lose any of your pieces (Terra, Shelke or Vivi).
