I avoided this by storing all my items into the chest in the Flea Market. After the bandit cutscene I just re-collected all my stuff and boom done haha

Why did you not just put your gear into the stash in the flea market (the ruined building which is on top of the bandit ambush). Then you don't have to look like a goober picking all your stuff and just get it all back in a single click of a button. you still lose your money though.
