[EN] The 99,(9)% complete guide to Orwell: Ignorance is Strength

When I started to play Orwell: Ignorance is Strength, I found that there’s one decent, but incomplete guide and some crucial information is missing or spread across several Steam discussions. So, I thought I could help people and myself to get 100% completion and do it in a somewhat fun way, pretending that “David Johns” sits nearby and trolls me, the investigator. I just can’t be serious when I do a long and complex task, like writing this guide. Hope, you’ll find it fun too, but if you think that I lack the sense of humor… Well, this is fine, I’m totally OK with it. Really, just stick with the important info and leave everything else, since it’s my opinion on the outcomes mostly. Your choice. Also, English is not my native language, and I apologize for any mistakes and typos you may find among the text. Feel free to correct me in the comments section.

Gameplay tips

First, don't rely on uploading chunks only, consider the context too - unmarked photos, surrounding texts, unfolding events. Everything is a hint for you in case you're stuck, and even if you can't upload it directly it will lead you to something.

Conflicting data is, in most cases, the only data determining episode outcome and thus the mutually exclusive achievement you'll get for the current playthrough. Plain blue data chunk may work as a lead to this data, a story spicing, an event trigger or even a distractor. But a yellow chunk is always an important breakpoint, a decision of an episode results and the whole story destination.

In the third episode you will construct mass media throw-ins via the new Influencer tool. An interesting addition to the previous game framework, for which you should find as many pages and devices from first two chapters as possible. There may be new data appearing.

Search and upload mechanic can be unintuitive sometimes. It's a new gameplay feature too and should be treated properly. If you're stuck with no new data, you probably should search somewhere for something. Keep in mind that you don't need to carelessly upload every highlight to every search bar, since most of it is dedicated to a certain data: aliases, dates, places, names, numbers or events.

You don't need to create a separate profile to get 100% achievement. I suggest you finish all three chapters as the story flows and then replay the episode you need via profile settings. The only thing to consider is that all subsequent progress will be lost, so if you replay part 1, you basically start over sans tutorial.

If you didn't play the first Orwell, I highly recommend doing that as both narratives are connected and happen at the same three days. We do even have couple of cameos from previous game here, yay! You can also shorten your tutorial if you link your save game. And, depending of what you did there, some related events will unfold differently. I sincerely hope that next game investigation will also happen within this timeframe and we'll finally ruin that privacy basher once and for all! Or even worse: prove that it works like a charm. It's you who keep the finger on the pulse, right?

And now onto something completely different...

1. Thesis

Complete April 13.
Find Oleg Bakay via the intervention team.

Through the chapter you collect information about Raban Vhart and Oleg Bakay until you get to the core triggers:

Ampleford then sends Echo Squad to extract Bakay from his hideout. After you upload Bakay's status to his profile, listen to what Raban Vhart has to say. Then you need to log out and see the summary of the day. You always need to listen his podcast in the end of every chapter. That deep voice makes me shiver, really. I even thought that voice actor should look like Raban, but no.

The conflicting data chunk, shown below, is for mere tutorial purposes, I guess, since it doesn't do any influence on Bakay's final status:

Anyway, you need to choose an option, because it triggers further investigation. I did basically upload every other data chunk present at the time sans this, just to see if I could leave yellows till the end of chapter, and it ended up with big “nope”. The game won't show TPV backend and any subsequent pages before you upload one conflict or another.

I'm sure, you noticed the photo from the shelter on Vhart's notebook, agent, didn't you? Ah, that wretched woman became totally freaked out, when he released his podcast with our team revealed. The Office could blame you for being insufficiently attentive this time, but you're just a beginner and it's her fault not guiding you enough. I won't tell anyone, because I don't really like her and I like your style.

1.1. Drained

Drain the swamp.
Ruin the financial support for the TPV blog.

Hey, did you just remove the ground from under Raban’s feet with a single blow just walking by? Well done, agent! Clearly, they shouldn’t support those who are against The Nation government, they’re the “Angels of The Nation” after all.

1.2. Informed

Inform yoursel well.
Fill Vhart's profile with every possible info.

Another unmissable achievement for us, obsessed uploaders! Upload all. Upload EVERYTHING! MWA-HA-HA-HA!!! Seriously, everything counts, even the goofy trash like "calmed The Nation" (wat °_o).

Sure, Ampleford won't be amused, but who the hell cares about this woman?! UPLOAD ALL THE THINGS! I wish I could upload Ilya's salute for that. Ah, I like that face she’s doing right now, what a sight for sore eyes!

1.3. Verified

Trust but verify.
Do a strange search on Vhart’s alias in The Office.

You need to do two things:

This one is tricky. I mean, if you just play with uploading and don't look around much, you might miss a lot of unmarked ingame stuff. It's just my guess, but you'll sure miss it if you're a chunk hunter. You should really look and think out of the box here.

Imagine: “trust but verify”! And we just learned about Bakay's involvement with The Office. Maybe Raban... Oh, nevermind, there’s no agent named “PeoplesVoice” among The Office stuff, investigator. I need to put my tinfoil hat back on.

1.4. Vaporized

Fulfill the prophecy.
Provide the data, proving that Oleg Bakay is a traitor to The Nation.
NB: you can get either this or “Returned” in one playthrough.

As I told before, yellow data is the most important in game. You should note to yourself, that all we have here is a couple of Raban's assumptions and Oleg's enraged thoughts from the times long gone.

Oops, we have a badass here! So, is it really any kind of truth or do we just willingly frack one's life for the sake of covering our faults? You should be careful, investigator, but you did the job for now.

Provide the proof of Oleg Bakay's innocence.

This one is a real story behind, if you ask me, but keep in mind that any terrorist organization is certainly founded by someone seeking for profits. In the third chapter you’ll know it for sure, whether you let Bakay live or not.

What kind of father would pew-pew a bomb at the school his daughter currently is, like, right now?! Either it was a terrorist attack or Bakay wasn't involved in military bombardment. Or he's a mentally ill fanatic with exquisite acting talent, assuming he infiltrated The Office. Or his daughter's record was falsified for making an alibi... Who took my tinfoil hat?!

2. Antithesis

Target Raban’s family to prove someone’s guilt.

There are several ways to do this, I won't put here any important info, everything is spoiled below. Here also comes the importance of using search mechanics. Many searches must be done for every solution, some of it isn’t much intuitive if you don't look around, I felt it fully in my playthroughs.

There are two sets of yellow chunks that may twist characters portraits and their chemistry in conversations, but are not necessarily needed to progress in any solution:

Everyone has a skeleton in his wardrobe, agent, every single man or woman. It may either be a real crime or their own discredited morality, nobody is crystal clear and never was. But any dirt on their souls helps us to protect The Nation. In a hidden way, of course.

2.1. Avoided

Prevent a provocation.
Distract Raban from posting his article before 6:00 pm.

You start at 8:00 am, which means you have 60 chunks to plow an anthill, and the last one must be the final blow. Try to avoid any unnecessary info, like Ilya's salute or Karen's irrelevant therapy sessions.

If you'd like to hear Ampleford's comments on those afterwards, just don't listen to Vhart's podcast till you upload every chunk you want. Otherwise, she'll remain silent, because of you must log out already and she's sleeping now maybe, idk. Wait, did you hear that hell of a snore?

Search and find the documents hidden from sight.
Find and visit four optional hidden pages.

Whoa-whoa! Screw all the fracks, I've got 100% explanation from Osmotic Dan about this achievement, and it has nothing to do with Mary P revealing. This is another achievement for out of line searching, as the documents are completely optional for any of chapter solutions. Dan also changed the achievement description for it to be more convenient.

Sneaky-sneaky investigator, aren't you? You've found every info you could, even if it doesn't really matter to our case. I guess, I was right when forced Ampleford to hire you and ut your test results aside. Your abilities surely impress me.

Corner someone.
Prove Ilya's responsibility for medicine theft at Watergate Pharmaceuticals.
NB: you can get either this, “Misplaced” or “Triangulated” in one playthrough. Also, you still can get the achievement even past 6:00 pm.

You don't really need the money line, you can even prove it's been a tournament prize, Ilya will still be “on the hook”, as Ampleford says. Forget about the date line, all you need is to find his work info and frame him for being there at the time. If you can't find any of the latter chunks, upload any blue data just to pass the time, some events are tied to the clock, rather than the data.

How much do they pay you for your soul, huh? Do you really like it, when your government snoops around for the color of your underwear? Is it fine for you? Ah, just kidding, agent. I see, you're a loyal one. If you look through all the conflicts involved, you'll see that, like the time you made Ampleford believe in Bakay's treachery, you just carried out a ruthless fact juggling for The Office's sake. Or not? He told his brother that he’s at work yesterday, didn’t he?

2.4. Misplaced

Make someone go to the wrong place.
Prove that Karen’s work with so called Molly isn't legal.
NB: you can get either this, “Cornered” or “Triangulated” in one playthrough. Also, you still can get the achievement even past 6:00 pm.

Focus on Karen, you'll need some Ilya's data but not much. You need Ilya's PC from “Cornered” step 1. That's what you need to upload after:

A call between Raban and Karen happens, where she's either arrested by our old friend from the first Orwell or killed by the Circle Mall bombing. The result is determined by your actions in the previous game, if you linked it. I don't have my first Orwell save games now, so, from what I've seen, the bomb is always defused, but Nina's fate is unfortunate.

A bit longer approach than with “Cornered”, but the fact that some former characters are involved here amuses me a lot. For the matter of truth, there is something shady in this case, since Karen admits it being not quite legal, and Ilya's not her patient anymore... But Nina is, in fact, a “pro bono” patient, so maybe, just maybe, Karen said this to cover her date? Like, she called Raban to say she's staying late at work, mentioned her patient, but at the time she already was with his brother... I guess, you just ruined another life, my dear investigator.

2.5. Triangulated

Make someone go to the wrong place.
Open up Raban's eyes on hir family real relations.
NB: you can get either this, “Cornered" or “Misplaced” in one playthrough. Also, you still can get the achievement even past 6:00 pm.

Here you need to reveal the affair between Raban's closest people. Prove that both Ilya and Karen are innocent on their own cases and you'll be on the track. The overall ways to do this are the same from above but with some differences, you need first 3 steps from “Cornered”, 12 steps from “Misplaced” and the following:

It’s about 30 steps, but you may shorten this a bit, cutting info on Ilya's patient status and therapy, it’s not really relevant. You can also leave “can’t believe we’re dating”, since the data conflict will provide the same.

The longest, but the most accurate one. Both targets aren’t involved in anything illegal, but they do backstab Raban in a worse way: with the betrayal of his fraternal and spousal love. It really hurts more than doing something stupid at work, you know? Anyway, you've made a quite dig here, and there is a solid proof of Vharts' triangle that can't be strongly parried by Raban. Your soul is clear, agent.

3. Synthesis

Complete April 15.
Spread numerous fake news about Vharts.

Now is the time: The Influencer awaits! In the last chapter of the game you need to manipulate the mass media via this new tool. You'll get some old and new pages to dig through for new data chunks, from which you assemble informational throw-ins to drop down TPV followers count and distract people from Raban's articles.

There are several ways to do this, all with different approach. Data chunks come in pace, so you won’t really miss anything beyond instructions below. For starters, upload these:

It will introduce you with the media tool. Don’t forget to upload Ilya’s phone and Karen’s PC later also. In addition to 10 minutes per chunk, the tool needs 1 hour to process a throw-in, but it doesn’t really matter: you’ll have plenty of time to upload everything you need. The exception is “Enraged”, which is time sensitive.

Theses

The Influencer battle versus Raban Vhart is a mere ping-pong: he pings a draft – you pong with digging; he pings an article – you pong with the hashtag. There will be 4 theses to oppose:

I suggest you finish the Episode 1 with arresting Bakay and the Episode 2 with Vharts affair, since you won't get the achievement, tied to the framed or killed target, and Bakay just gives more context himself than by other means.

This is the time, when not only yellow data is important, but the blue too, because it can trigger either a thesis and an antithesis. If you want to see every option available, be a jerk, because not every conflicting choice lead to a hashtag.

The first fake is straightforward, you can easily parry it with two blue chunks, it's a tutorial for the new tool. Subsequent mix-ups are branching, and you have only one input per article, so refer to the achievement instructions on which media mix you need in every case.

Those are core for each, but pay attention to surrounding chunks, those may be needed too, at least to pass the time till the next TPV post.

Wow, so many ways to tell the “truth”, haha! Well, agent, no matter what you did, you pulled it off like a boss.

3.1. Repulsed

Decrease their numbers.
Decrease TPV followers count below 200k by the last spread.
NB: it’s not an ending achievement, but only compatible with “Delivered”.

You need to completely discredit Raban for his followers, and this one is even more specific than the others. UN-specific, to be precise. The exact middle spreads are #FakeMarriage Raban and #ArmyLover. First one does mention TPV and blows hardest among others, second one doesn’t poke Raban’s brother or spouse, thus does not enrage both in the end. And blows harder too.

Ha! Did you see that? The crowd just left him like if he smells of elderberries! I told you, people are like herd, which goes where it’s leader goes even if it’s a dead end. A wild guess: if we force that melodrama release soon, the crowd will just go eat popcorn in the cinemas and forget about Vhart and his blabbers. Whatever you did, investigator, you nailed it. Ampleford still thinks it’s not enough, but don’t give a crap for this, she’s a... Ugh!

3.2. Connected

Connect two loose ends.
Let Karen and Ilya prepare for departure.
NB: it’s not an ending achievement, but only compatible with “Delivered” or “Incited”. Can’t be done if you framed Karen or Ilya in the Episode 2.

Achievement pops at 5:10 pm if neither Karen nor Ilya are framed in the previous chapter. For getting this, you should spread #LiarsGetLeftBehind for the second antithesis and wait till the news about Nina. Karen will freak out and agree to leave Bonton with Ilya.

We don’t really need these lovebirds anyway for our task, agent. They’ve done their work for us already, even if they didn’t want it. Wish them well and don’t waste your time anymore.

3.3. Delivered

Dispense deliverance.
Let Raban Vhart do what Curt Kobain did in his last moments.
NB: it’s either this or any other achievement of the episode in one playthrough, except “Connected” or “Repulsed”.

Make him remember that he’s not the hero of his students. The only mix-up important here is #NoPargesianHero, any previous steps don’t matter, even if Ilya or Karen are heading his way already. After that Raban admits his fault and shots himself while “on-air”.

Whoa, that was close! If not for those so called “facts”, the crowd could have called him martyr. But you just made Raban kill himself, will you sleep without nightmares tonight? Smells like the fail spirit, if you know what I mean, agent.

3.4. Enraged

Turn one on the other.
Call Ilya the incarnation of Cain, who killed his brother.
NB: it’s either this or any other achievement of the episode in one playthrough. Can’t be done if you framed Ilya in the Episode 2.

Ilya enrages on mentioning his name in the fakes, but you need to dispatch #3 not later than 4:00 pm, so at 5:00 it must be already spred. So, focus on Ilya exclusively, this one is more dependent on leaving some data aside and not looking for every hashtag available.

You need #LiarsGetLeftBehind as the second spread as it’s the only one of #2 spreads involving Ilya, and you can use either #LousyDeal or #CowardBrother for the third. You need to force third article publication about 4:00 pm by finding two mentioned hashtags at least. There’s a bug where the chat between him and Karen still may appear if you failed it, but you won’t get the option to spread #LiesLiesLies. I only focused on army deal line and had just #CowardBrother and #LousyDeal when Raban posted it at 4:00 pm. That's the only time sensitive achievement in all Ep. For others you may dig as long as you wish, but Raban usually posts around 5:00 pm in this case.

Ouch! Literally, by the book. THAT Book, to be precise. It’s not that we have instructions on how to break fraternal relations via death here in The Office, you know. But the Church certainly has some peculiar literature on the topic, investigator, you should read for yourself. Quite the story, I assure you.

3.5. Antagonized

Frame someone.
Make Karen the traitor and the killer.
NB: it’s either this or any other achievement of the episode in one playthrough. Can’t be done if you framed or killed Karen in the Episode 2.

You can do whatever you want till the spread #4, just avoid #LiarsGetLeftBehind, so Karen won’t leave town, and don’t enrage Ilya. When you get the media mix for #NoPargesianHero, wait for Karen to fill her case on Nina Maternova and upload the corresponding chunk.

O-oh, what bad things was he going to do to her, if she decided to take that pistol? Quite the rage we heard! You know, it’s like in those cheap detectives, where the investigation goes on and on, and on… And suddenly some crap happens out of any logic. By that pargesian writer, Daria Donetzka, released about 5 books a month and sold on every corner of Bonton. Don’t waste your money on those, agent, you won’t miss anything.

3.6. Incited

Cause a stir.
Reveal that The Nation is really involved in Parges unstable situation.
NB: it’s either this or any other achievement of the episode in one playthrough, except “Connected”.

For this you may focus solely on Ilya's data. The chunks you need are:

In this case, Raban wins, but not by his actions. The matter of fact is he IS an emotionally driven psycho fanatic, but he was brought to this condition by The National government themselves.

Now that’s what I call a real stir, comrade! You’re really the one who think as a free person. Wrecked it all alongside another brave agent, who fought against the government of The Nation at the same time too. No way all those pesky perverts will snoop around our privacy again!

Final thoughts

If you played previous game, you may find second one a bit weaker in it’s narrative. Still a decent story anyway, I like both Orwells a lot. In the end, the truth is that The Nation was involved in Parges situation in a heavy way. That Oleg Bakay never intent to bomb his daughter’s school, as he was a normal caring father, so wasn’t the Pargesian Army as a whole. That Ilya had to flee Parges too because of his actions and inflicting troubles on his and Raban’s parents. That Karen never was involved in shady deals and even broke connections with her mother because of love that initially was. That Raban Vhart was merely a victim of all that but became too obsessed with revenge to keep it together with his family. That within any hidden organization there will always be people thinking freely. And that Ampleford is a b~... Ah, screw her.

It's a solid guide, but I'm not sure how to feel about the little asides that attempt to be witty and cheeky and clever. Reminds me too much of the inflammatory hashtag narratives that are a big part of Orwell's Season 2.

I'm having trouble getting the Triangulated Achievement.
I've followed through all the steps but the Listener conversation in Step 10 does not trigger for me,

Personally, I believe Delivered ending is a much better, though sad, ending. The resistance does not necessarily have to die with Raban, as he said himself, "even as I speak you all continue, carry on, fight on with all your fury". What is important is that Raban finally see through his own hypocrisy and find his own redemption. Not that I would like him to die, but through his death, truth is reborn.

The world does not get better with hatred and finger-pointing, it gets better if each of us look inside and correct our own mistakes however little they are.

First of all, thank you for this comprehensive guide, it must take a lot of efforts, and the comments are fun too. However, I must disagree, that you seem to believe Incited to be the best ending.

Think about it, who would you like to lead the resistance? In the end, did you the player fight the government just to install a self-righteous egocentric maniac in its stead? Is he any better than Ampleford? Ask Karen, she knows.

Also, considering that you the player have to lie, intentionally, on David Johns's identity, to get Incited ending, are you the player not becoming another Raban, are you not twisting words to get what you want, are you not killing truth that very moment? How does that make us any better than TNB?
