Get Discord Overlay In Dirty Bomb
De Ego
The Discord Overlay comes in handy to keep track of who is on the server and who is talking while in game, but it actually is kind of tricky to get in to show up in game.

Here I'll show you how to get it, and how it is most useful without being annoying in my point of view.

Introduction
Hi there,

first of, I am sure you know what an In-Game Overlay is and how it works since we are on Steam.
Chat-Programs like TeamSpeak, Mumble & Discord also have those In-Game Overlays which is really useful, since you don't have to tab out of the game to see who joined or left, or who is talking since you don't always know everybody you are playing with.

But the Discord Overlay is not always activated on Default, and to get it running in Dirty Bomb can be tricky and it took me a while to understand how it works, even though it is really easy.

So, I made a short Tutorial on it :)

1. Settings in Discord
So, before we get into the process of activating the Overlay in Dirty Bomb, we first have to check the standard settings and activate the Overlay :)

Open Discord and go to your User Settings, by clicking the wheel next to your Username, and then Navigate to "Overlay".

If the in-game Overlay is not enabled, do this.

Also make sure to set your HotKey for the Overlay to a combination you don't use for anything else, for example, the Steam Overlay or Nvidia Overlay and things like that.

Here you also can change the appearance of the Overlay in-game, but more on this later.

So, you are basically finished here, but I want to show you something else already.

In the Settings Screen, there is also a "Game" Settings, head there now.

At this point no Game should be running, in the lower Part, you should see games the Overlay was activated for or is available in.

As you can see, "Dirty Bomb" is listed there, because I tried another, not correct way, before. To be clear, activating this Option does NOT (!) give you the Overlay in Game, you have to go another route for that.
2. Get Discord in Dirty Bomb
So, now on how to get the Overlay working in the Game.

Therefore leave Discord running and start Dirty Bomb now, you don't need to join a game or anything, just sitting on your home screen is enough.

Now, leave Dirty Bomb running, tab out of the Dirty Bomb window and head back to Discord and it's settings.

If you now go to "Games" as we did in Part 1 before, you now should see that Discord detected Dirty Bomb.

The game is highlighted in green, and as you can see there is a small warning sign and the text "Overlay: off" and the crossed out screen.

Now activate the Overlay by simply left clicking on the screen symbol, and it now should look like this.

Now, tab back into your Dirty Bomb Window, activate your hotkey combination (I use "ctrl" + "+") and Discord should show up in your game.

In the next Part, I will explain how to relocate the Overlay Window and wich settings I use and think are most suitable.

3. In-Game Overlay Settings
So, now you have the Discord Overlay in the game, from now on I show you the settings I like and suggest.

Please keep in mind that this is personal taste, and where you may place your overlay should fit your HUD and may vary if you use a custom HUD, so experiment and find out what suits you best.

On how to move the Overlay window

Moving the placement is fairly easy, just press your hotkey combination so the context window shows up an move it with your mouse. Easy and simple as that. As far as I can see it magnet-locks to the sides of your screen, and you can't really place it in the lower corners as nice as in the upper corners.

For the other Overlay Settings

I suggest going to a voice channel that has actually multiple people in it, so you can see the effect your changes make.

You can change the in-game appearance in two ways that I explain below, first off I will tell you how I have set it.

  • Avatar Size - Small

  • Display Names - Only While Speaking

  • Display Users - Always

  • 1. Directly in Game
Therefore, open the game Overlay as before with your HotKey Combination and click the little wheel in the header. Another side window opens where you can change the settings I mentioned before.

  • 2. In Discord
When you want to do it this way, as before open your settings and go to "Overlay"

As I said before, fiddle with those settings to your liking.

  • I use the Avatar Size "Small" because I want as less space blocked a possible.

  • The Names are only displayed when a person is speaking. If you know all the people that you are playing with well, and can identify them by their voices, you may also turn this off. But I find it helpful to see who is speaking and being shown their name since I really can't connect every voice with every name and often play with friends of friends of friends of....you get it.

  • I have "Display Users" on "Always" because I like to keep track of how many people are in the room, who exactly is in the room (if I can identify them by their profile picture) and stuff like that. It gives you a better overview, also in my case, there are users that join discord and listen to what you say, but for one or another reason don't use their microphone/speak. By setting it to "Always" you can still see those people and don't forget that they are there.
Thanks for checking this guide :)
That's all.

...I did only 3 Guidess so far and there are far better Guide Writers out there that would deserve that name, since they actually go in depth on certain game mechanics, but thank you :)
