How to take on legionaries and win
By Æðelflead Ðe Bad At ðis Game
I have already published a 'How to take on...' guide about phalanxes and thought I might write one about how to defeat legionaries. Firstly, this is going to be a little vauge as the only experience i have fighting legionaries is with legionaries (civil war dont ask), so this will use the tactics i use for that. This will also have some general advice about fighting infantry in general (not including phalanxes, if you want to destroy them, check the other guide.). please enjoy and tell me how I could improve this

The Legionary
post Marian reform Legion systems were developed by a man called Marius, uncle of Julius Caesar. This guy (Marius) re-organised the way roman soldiers fought, by doing away with hastati, princepes and so on, and standardising everything, from the legion to the individual soldier. I want to phostumously award this dude a medal. He was a GENIUS.
The legionary was said to be the best trained soldier in the world, and he may very well have been. He was given constant and extensive training from swordplay to parades to forming the roman testudo (useable in game).
The real bit of the guide that you wanted
Now after that bit of history we can work out how to make the best trained soldier ever in the ancient world run away from you screaming 'mars preserve us mars preserve us!'
Flanking
Flanking can be used to rout anything. LITERALLY ANYTHING. It is the most simple tactic and is lways useful. It only requires:
  • reasonably good timing
  • a force to flank with
  • an enemy to flank
  • and a unit to hold the enemy in place.
My StrategyI think you can guess who developed this strategy. It can only work on legionaries and I have never tested it, so sorry in advance if it blows up in your face. The layout. you have infantry capable of running, and archers/ skirmishers behind them. the enemy legionary cohort is in normal stance. begin bombarding the legionaries with arrows/javelins. If they dont form testudo, they get slaughtered by arrows. If they do form testudo, wait till they are just about to form it then charge. time it so that you will meet them when the testudo is formed. legionaries cannot fight while in testudo, and this should give you a few seconds of unchallenged damage to enemy. By the time they start tofight back, they should have a big hole in their moral (and possibly their stomachs too).
The 2nd Englebert strategy (sorry, there's another one)
This one does not apply solely to legionaries, and you've probably done it without knowing it. If the enemy is charging you, charge at them. This way they dont get the charge bonus.
