Achievement Guide: Get Some Grub

Hi!
This guide provides you with useful information to complete all tasks that are necessary to get the “Get Some Grub” achievement in “Half Life-Episode 2”.
I will show you the spots of all grubs along with beneficial knowledge about the surroundings that will help you progress in the game properly.
(please excuse grammatical mistakes or spelling mistakes, English is not my native language)

Chapter One: Hunter Attack - Antlion Battle

Chapter One begins after Alyx got attacked by the hunter. You will enter the mine until you find a pit stuffed with carts. On the last level, with the poison headcrab, you enter an illuminated hole where you’ll find the first 5 grubs [#1-5].
In the next passage, until the web, you find 3 grubs. [#6-8]

On the web, directly after it and in the bigger area you will find 6 more. [#9-14]’

In the darker corridor, that leads to the next pit, you will find 9 grubs. [#15-23]

• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.

After you entered the mine you will find some antlion workers. After you killed them, go to the area left of where you entered and kill the 3 grubs. [#24-26]

At the locker and in the tunnel, you will come across 6 more [#27-32]
Pay special attention to the grub in the locker, it’s very easy to miss.
Back in the area of the antlion workers are some supply crates.
Enter the bigger area and fight the antlion worker. You will see a whole wall covered in grubs. Kill the higher grubs (8) with the 9mm Pistol. [#33-40]
On the path and on the nearby walls you will find another 9 grubs. [#41-49]

• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.

There are 7 more grubs next to you: 4 covering the entrance, 1 in the entrance and 2 on the ground next to supply. [#50-56]

In the next area you will find 2 grubs on the shore, 1 on a pillar and 1 under the pillar. [#57-60]
On the ground of the lake is web that you can break, containing supplies.

Dive into the next area where you will be greeted by an antlion. Directly after you left the water you will find 2 grubs on the wall. [#61-62]
A few steps away, next to a shovel, are 2 more. [#63-64]
Be attentively while exploring this area. Next to a few supply goods there are a lot of barnacles hanging from the ceiling.

There are 3 grubs in hollows next to you: 1 to the left, 2 to the right. [#65-67]

A bit further, there are 2 grubs on the shore and another a few steps to the right. [#68-70]

In the darker passage leading to the next area are 2 grubs on the ground. [#71-72]
Be aware, an antlion worker is awaiting you.

A web to your left covers 4 grubs, another one is on the shore on the opposing side of the lake.

Follow the dark passage. It contains 4 grubs. [#78-81]
Two antlion workers are expecting you, so be careful.

In the illuminated passage on your left is another grub. [#82]

On the ground next to the pillar and right before the web are 5 more. [#83-87]

On the web and directly after are 4 grubs. [#88-91]

• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go back and find them.

After the loading screen you enter the chapter “This Vortal Coil”. You will find 2 grubs after you entered the lower level of the passage. [#92-93]

After that, the sequence with the antlion battle together with the small resistance group begins.
There are a few supply crates in the tunnels and of course some down by the vortigaunt. Use the hopper mines and the turrets to fight the antlions, use to short breaks to reload and to relocate the turrets.
There aren’t any grubs in this sequence. Just after the vortigaunt has opened the gate and the sequence ends, the hunt for the grubs continues.

Chapter Two: Antlion Battle - Elevator Fight

Chapter Two begins after the battle has ended and the Vortigaunt opens the door. You enter a passage to your right where you find 5 grubs. [#94-98]

You will come across a web containing supplies and 4 grubs, 1 on the outside and 3 on the inside.

In front of the web that seals the entrance to the bigger area you find 3 more.
[#103-105]

After you destroyed the web and entered the area you will come across a few antlions.
In this part you find 6 grubs. [#106-111]

Continue until you get attacked by a few antlion workers. You will find 3 grubs. [#112-114]

After you fought the antlion workers, look up to the ceiling and kill the 2 grubs that are attached to it.

On your way to the illuminated web you stumble upon 2 grubs. The web itself contains supplies and 2 grubs, one hidden on the ground. [#117-120]

Just before the antlion worker surprises you are 2 grubs on the ground. [#121-122]

Continue until you fought off all antlion workers. Until you’re about to enter another passage you should have killed 6 grubs. [#123-128]

On your way to a web you come across 4 grubs. The web itself contains supplies and 2 grubs.

After the attack of the antlion workers you can kill the 5 grubs on your way. [#135-139]

You come across another web, located on the ceiling. Under the web are 2 grubs. The web contains supplies, a grub on the ceiling and an activated grenade, so be careful. [#140-142]
• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.
You enter a new part of the mine. In the first room are 3 grubs, located on the ground. [#143-145]

In the middle you will find a wooden cover with grenades and supply crates on top. Remove them before you step on the cover, because it will collapse and you along with the supplies will fall down into a dark abyss.
You would survive, but the supplies would fall through the gaps between the planks.

Before entering the new room, try to kill the zombies with the gas tanks that are lying around.
On a jerrycan are 3 grubs. [#146-148]
Right next to the grubs is locker, containing supplies, a jerrycan and steel nails that will help you to kill the fast zombies that are awaiting you in the next room. The dead grubs that are nailed to the wall next to the locker do NOT count!

Enter the next room and kill the fast zombies, one at the entrance and one at the opposing wall.
Then use the steel beams and barrels to push the elevator down.

On your way down you will find a hollow containing supply crates. In the elevator shaft are 3 grubs, located on the wall. [#149-151]
After you arrived you’ll find 5 grubs right next to the elevator. [#152-156]

In a detached area right in front of you is a zombine, a few supplies and 3 grubs. [#157-159]
In the next room you’ll find 4 grubs, one located under the elevator along with supplies and steel beams, which will help you to catch the elevator later. [#160-163]
A zombine is hiding in the small detached area, containing the control panel for the elevator. Kill him, get the supplies and activate the elevator.

• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.
The elevator takes you back to the vortigaunt, but at first you have to kill the 2 grubs in the elevator shaft. [#164-165]

Fight off the zombies, open the gate for the vortigaunt and kill the 6 grubs located nearby the elevator. [#166-171]

After the gate has opened you find a cart containing multiple supply crates along with a grub. [#172]
Get the crates with the gravity gun and jump off before it falls into the abyss.
On the opposing wall you will find 4 grubs. Kill them with the 9mm pistol. [#173-176]

Walk to the next passage that is blocked. Along the tracks are 9 grubs. If the cart won’t kill all, kill the remaining ones. [#177-185]
Over the ceiling is a hideout with two antlion workers. Throw a grenade up to them and continue when they’re dead.
Collect the supplies that fell out the cart and continue to the ladder.

You will come to a kind of hopper which contains supplies. Push it away with the gravity gun and collect the items.
• Checkpoint: At this point you can’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.

You’ll fall into a cart that rolls down into a water filled shaft. The shaft contains 12 grubs.

Along the tracks are 9 grubs along with supplies at the top. [#198-206]

Enter the dark area and kill the 10 grubs on your way. [#207-216]

On the opposing wall are 10 grubs. Kill them with the 9mm pistol. [#217-226]
• Checkpoint: At this point you won’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs,
go back and find them.

You’ll now enter the elevator fight. Kill the first few antlions with surrounding explosives and kill the following ones with your guns. Collect the supplies and wait until the elevator arrives. During the fight are no grubs to find. The search continues after the vortigaunt has opened the gate.

After you fought off the antlions and zombies you’ll come to a gate. The vortigaunt arrives soon after you and activates the generator. From now on the search for grubs continues.
Soon after you crossed the room with the corpse you will meet the antlion guardian. It’s impossible to kill him with your weapons, so don’t even try.

When you turn left you’ll find 6 grubs and a supply crate at the end of the passage. [#227-232]

When you turn right you’ll find 4 grubs in front of the carts. [#233-236]

Jump down the elevator shaft and crawl past the fan. You will come across a hole, covered with 3 grubs. By jumping through the webs, you kill another 6. A last grub is next to the exit of the hole, shoot it down with the 9mm pistol. [#238-246]
Down on a pillar are 2 more. [#247-248]

Dive through the webs in the ground to the other side. Be careful, barnacles are awaiting you.

While swimming to the shore you find 8 grubs. [#249-256]
The yellow passage contains 3 grubs. Be aware of the antlion worker that’s expecting you.

Turn right to find a yellow hollow. It contains 4 grubs. [#260-263]

• Checkpoint: At this point you won’t get back to where you were. If you miss some grubs, go
back and find them.

Jump down behind the pillar. Now that the antlion guardian chasing you, run to the yellow entrance, covered by 2 grubs. Inside are 3 more to find. [#264-268]

Jump down and until the end of the passage you find another 4 grubs. [#269-272]

Leave the passage and run to the left. Enter a new yellow passage covered by 2 grubs.
In the passage until the exit are 12 more grubs to find. [#273-286]

Run to the yellow entrance to your right, covered by 3 grubs. Until the exit are 6 more to find.

Try to run past the antlion guardian to the first yellow entrance you see, covered by 2 grubs.
The inside contains 3 more. [#296-300]

Wait until your energy has restored and then run until you see another yellow entrance, covered with 3 grubs. The inside contains 3 more. [#301-306]

Get to the exit, where you find 5 grubs, and run to your left. [#307-311]
Enter the blocked shaft and let yourself fall down into the next mine.
Find the following grubs and supplies clockwise from the point where you enter:

Left to the elevator are 3 grubs. [#312-314]

On the ceiling is a web with supplies and 3 grubs. [#315-317]

Left to an old gear are 3 grubs. [#318-320]

On the left wall is a web with a grub, supplies and a poison headcrab. [#321]

Next to a small puddle are 3 grubs. [#322-324]

On the left wall is a web with supplies and 1 grub. [#325]

In the middle of the cave is a web on the ceiling, containing 3 grubs, supplies and a headcrab.
Watch the rocks falling out of it. [#326-328]

Get the gear and put it into the elevator. The vortigaunt comes down and opens the gate. Next to the generator is a grub. [#329]

Just after you passed the gate are 3 grubs on your right. [#330-332]

The vortigaunt gets the vital extract and brings it to Alyx. After the G-Man sequence you leave the area and take the elevator to an upper level.
The last grub is located behind some wooden planks you will come across right after you left the elevator [#333]

At this point you should get the achievement. Congratulations!

Tips and Hints

Using the Guide & Keeping the Overview:
Be sure to have this guide by your side when you play, on your phone or second monitor, to always have an eye on it.
Some grubs are hidden and you will miss them easily, so make sure to move slowly and attentively.
To control the total number of grubs you have killed it’s necessary to open up the ACHIEVEMENTS section in the main menu. Just hit ESC when you’re in game to check quickly.

Killing the Grubs:
Grubs on the ground and at the bottom of the walls are easy to kill just by walking over or towards them. If they are located nearby but are not accessible you can easily kill them with the Gravity Gun. In case they are located further away use the 9mm Pistol because you can aim a lot more precisely and you will find various ammunition around.

Avoid killing the grubs with grenades, the SMG or the shotgun. You will lose overview over the number of grubs you have killed, which will aggravate to control if you spared one by accident or not. Furthermore, you need those weapons to kill enemies you will come across like antlions, zombies or barnacles.

Cheating:
It's useless to get to the grubs by using “noclip” or other cheats. The game won’t count any achievements as long as you have cheats activated, so you have to start from the beginning of the game and get them in the traditional way.

I tried this achievement without a guide and got 332/333 myself... Turns out I missed the one inside the locker (#27) and have to start ALL over... sigh... Thanks for the guide though! It helped me figure out which one I missed.

Thank you so much for this guide. Not having pictures for some of the locations made it a bit hard at times, but quicksaving helped me whenever I realized I must've missed some. The parts where you say the "You can't go back there once you enter this area" type-of-thing helps a ton because it helps narrow down where you missed grubs. That being said this achievement still took a while for me to get even with the guide but I highly doubt I could've found them on my own. I'm trying to 100% more games on Steam as I only have 2 (as of writing) and for some of the harder achievements, I've been relying on guides like these (example: I completed all the HL2 achievements recently and needed a guide for Lambda Locator. This guide here is basically the HL2 ep2 equivalent to that).

TL;DR: Thank you for making this; super helpful if you're achievement-hunting. To everyone here, read the guide carefully and don't be afraid to make frequent saves just in case.

for 227-236, you should say that the grubs are found shortly after the supply crate, as i saw none looking around there and when i turned left from there and over the ramp, then i saw the 6 grubs and the other grubs mentioned to the right.
