My experience

I reset 'Save data' without thinking
Everything I'd ever had, characters, weapons, pets, Everything just poof, into thin air

Well obviously I just felt really sad, 72 hours of my life put into Castle Crashers all for nothing
But wait, save files in Castle Crashers are locally saved before being uploaded to the cloud.

I went to a different computer I hadn't used in a while, went to
saved all files to a USB and pasted them onto the computer I normally use and ran the game,
to my surprise it actually worked.

(The 1st set of numbers should be your STEAM ID, the 2nd set of numbers is the GAME ID)
(I believe that what I did ALSO applies to other games that save in a similar fashion)

TLDR; STEPS

STEPS

1. Open file explorer, go under program files -> Steam -> userdata
Alternatively, pasting C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata into the bar should work

2. Click the folder with steam number associated with your account (found in profile url)
If you have a custom url you wlll have to use a 3rd party site like https://www.steamidfinder.com/
The number will be steamID3: [U:1:328191283] aka 328191283 in my case

3. Click the folder with game id you are looking for (found on game's steam page)

4. Copy all of the files in the folder

5. Paste into desired backup space (usb, desktop folder, etc.)

6. Test the files on another device with internet off (ensures testing does not override cloud save)

7. Profit, I mean, Success!

Backup your files every so often, they barely take up space and it's worth the peace of mind
Do not forget to test that your backups work

Save data resets EVERYTHING
Character data ONLY resets the character you're currently on the page on
Don't mistake Y for X either

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Why backup save, cloud save exists?
Cloud save only saves the latest instance
If you exit connected to internet, your empty save overrides your save with progress

Missing files?
I don't know either to be honest, I checked my file recently and saw no local file
It should still backup with no issues though but this is what testing is for

Why would you want to reset character?
You like the character's playstyle and want to restart campaign

Do skill points carry over?
No because it sets you back at level 1, look for a progression/leveling guide
My 2 favourites are juggling trolls in the Troll Mother boss fight (endless spawning)
Or farming the Catfish boss (clear speed depends on character magic)

Do you keep character unlocks?
Short answer, yes with character data reset, no with save data reset
For example, reset Blue Knight you still get to keep Industrialist (from Blue Knight campaign)
As far as I know, all character data does is erase the character level and skull
But it should NOT erase the character you unlocked by using them

Does this work with other games?
In theory, yes if they save in a similar fashion

What is backup and restore programs?
From my limited research, it is only for transferring game files NOT save data between computers.

Can you transfer saves to other people?
Depends on the game but some games tie save files to Steamid (ex. Monster Hunter World)

GUIDE UPDATED FOR CLARITY, I've been meaning to for a while but from my limited research, backup and restore programs feature on steam is for transferring only game data NOT save data between computers. To backup your save, follow along my updated guide!

azortics, no because it sets it back to level 1, there's multiple guides out there on how to farm exp though, my 2 favourites are juggling trolls in the Troll Mother boss fight (she spawns them endlessly) or farming the Catfish boss.

Adding on to what Moofooist said, as far as I know Cloud Save only ever saves the latest instance of your save. I made the mistake of exiting out connected to the internet so it overwrote my old save by Cloud and locally.

Blakey Blake, it is but cloud only works if you are connected to internet, its more reliable to back up local files too.
